They definitely turned the Languid plate on that whistle. I'm sure they'll get it to sound the original A-flat minor 6th like it used to someday. But still sounds phenomenal unbelievable clarity and clean cut sound being because it's brass. Now it seems to sound an E 7th Chord. And for those wondering the individual frequencies the whistle sounds now at full Pull it's (Ab, B, D, E, Ab)
476 looks amazing with that diamond stack and headlamp and she sounds amazing with that DRGW cast brass five chime whistle making her look and sound like a DRGW K-28 Class mikado
When I went on the D&S in July my train was lead by 493 and 476. 476 had that diamond stack and box lamp and believe it or not, it smelt like Coal Smoke, I think that diamond stack has a scent
Do you think 481 would return for the K36 Anniversary in 2025? Also, how long do 1472 day inspections tend to take? Because what if they could get 482 back for the K36 Anniversary as well?
Usually they take up to 1 1/2 - 2 years at a railroad like the D&SNG. 482 should be up and running again this sometime this Winter (I think I heard about January), and 481 sometime before next Spring according to the schedule. Hopefully work on 486 has also began by the 100th anniversary!
Hey, I noticed that Cumbres and Toltec 488 has 482's 5 chime from 2017: It's in this video here: th-cam.com/video/DpbNtidNDIk/w-d-xo.html. The whistle is heard at 3:50 - 4:12
Not sure that’s the case. The tuning on 482’s old 5 chime was the chord on the majority of D&RGW 5 chimes. 482’s has a crisp, clear sound. Last time it was used was back in 2019 on 481 from my knowledge. This could be the same one, but it sounds very worn out. I’m pretty sure D&SNG still has all their old whistles and I’ve heard they’re rebuilding some of said whistles to be used again (which is good news for me, 5 chimes are my favorites).
I am not completely sure, the D&SNG is working on multiple locomotives right now, you got 482, 481, 340, 346, and a couple of diesels. She may not be on their priority list. Plus, last time I was in town (about June) they hadn't started work on her for all I know, so hopefully she's back in service sometime in 2025. The D&SNG is only doing boiler work for her, the rest is in the CRRM's hands.
Don’t know, it is confirmed she will be last to run, as 481 has started her conversion to burn oil about a month ago. I would hope the same whistle, as 476 is using temporarily while her 3 chime is being serviced, but who knows, could be another. Only time will tell.
Idk probably in the roundhouse somewhere, last year the D&SNG threw a 6 chime on 476 for a couple months then gave her the 3 chime back. It could be a similar situation with this.
Great to see that they put a 5 chime on that engine!
About 486's whistle, @Jaiah Hazelnut Brown said that it was turned wrong during the winter.
Yep, that is correct. I believe they rotated the whistle's bell a bit, that's why it sounds off to this day.

Bu then if you're saying 1472 day inspections take 1 1/2 years, then why is Colorado Railroad Museum 346 still undergoing the rebuild?

Awesome, but where is the 3 chime then?

@@RioGrande486 I see
It was having problems so it was a quick swap
@@RioGrande486when I went on it 493 was wearing a whistle that sounded like 473’s or 476’s
@@DenverRioGrande487 That would’ve probably been the Norfolk & Western experimental 3 chime. Now she has a Nathan long-bell 3 chime
