    Mechanics Tip: when removing spin-on filters, whether it be with a filter wrench, strap or big pliers, grab the can as close to the top as possible. This will lessen the chance of crushing, twisting or collapsing the can.

    • @mountainman5025
      @mountainman5025 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Not really...They are mostly hollow throughout, and the steel bottom is as structural as the top.

    • @jimmartin7881
      @jimmartin7881 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yup, I have a strap wrench I made from 2 motorcycle chains welded together around a 1/2 in. extension and it's never failed to remove a filter when constricting near the top where the thick mounting disc is.

    • @markphilpott8735
      @markphilpott8735 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jimmartin7881 sounds like a hell of a strap wrench. I could have used something like that on the hydraulic filters I had to deal with. Two chains side by side should provide ample surface contact and grip. That's good thinking on your part.👍

      Also, mark the filters with the date and/or mileage of the change.

    • @irgski

      I prefer the metal band version…and I do try to grab the can by either the top or bottom edges.

    Runs pretty good! Be sure and tell your wife thank-you for filming while you are working on the bus. I see Tyler struggling sometimes when filming and trying to work with only one hand. I don't think I have the patience to do that, and the videos are fun to watch. I may never get a chance to drive a Jimmy again, so it's fun to see these old machines still working strong.

    I know nothing about 71-series diesels, but I love your videos. It's great to see a methodical job done by a very talented Technician!
    I started using a plumbers tubing/pipe cutter to cut filters open. Much cheaper than the dedicated tool. I've also seen a guy use Wiss aviation tin snips to cut off the crimped edge to open them up.

    I’m wondering if they cut into the filters to see if there was any metal and/or bacterial growth in the engine & fuel system. (Edit, nevermind, typed that before they did it.) But a 2 valve head’ll certainly work and you can always upgrade if/when it’s rebuilt. I’m wondering if they’ll put on propane injection similar to what’s on Lenny.
    Speaking of Lenny, were you able to get the suspension fixed & are you still debating about installing a turbo? Love the content, keep up the great job!!!!!

    I grew up around these things. Thats why I drive a truck now. Closest thing to wrenching i do now is replacing mud flaps. I learned from an old navy mechanic that the best way to get air out of the fuel system was to fill the filters with transmission fluid. It pushes the air thru and also cleaned the injector s as it pushed all the soot out of the tailpipe. Never had to fill the filters more than 1 time after that.

    Question, looking for thoughts of why a Detroit 94 in a 1995 Pierce Fire Truck would miss fire when it warms and puffs out white smoke when it misses. The coolant is not getting into the engine and the truck will pump at the 2400 RPM fine. We are a rural Tennessee fire department and do not have a lot of money to get repairs. Any ideas would help we have changed the fuel filters and bleed the system.
