  • The role of a hospice volunteer coordinator is to find, educate, support, and celebrate volunteers. Volunteers provide direct and indirect support to hospice patients and families. Volunteers can make companionship visits, vigil visits, help in an administrative role, or make bereavement phone calls; they can be found singing, playing music, playing games, offering hand massages, or bringing in a certified therapy pet; but, most importantly, a hospice volunteer brings their heart, focus, and intention to connect. It's not about having a certain set of skills you can bring. It's about the making someone feel valued and cared for.

Interesting that there are zero comments. As a volunteer, I see my role as being a companion, being there for someone if they would like someone to be their friend. It's a very simple outlook and people's different ideas about the proper way to be a volunteer is what makes actually doing it complicated. I just try to stay focused on the basic point and ignore the other stuff if I don't really think it has a benefit to the patient.
