Hopefully I'm not asking too late for a response. But does signing up for Nielson Soundscan make me eligible for all the charts that my music may apply to or only to certain charts?
Hey Morgan! That's actually a great question. Yes! Nielsen Soundscan will track your song's performance and release and then if it qualifies for any chart positions, you'll be able to check them and find out. That's why when you register your song/album you answer what genres your music is as well as some other info. Think of it as that information giving them an idea of which charts your could potentially make it on to. :) Hope that helps and let me know if you have any other questions, I'll do my best to help you out. :)

Yes! To my knowledge they always pay out 100% of the royalties that an artist earns! :)

Hey! I totally get the fear of putting your music out there. So I’m not a lawyer so don’t take this as exact legal advice BUT I have 12+ years experience in the music industry so this is what I know. Here in the USA, You CAN file a copyright protection with copyright office in Washington DC, but that process takes a long time. But creating something you already have a bit of copyright on it when you release it officially. I would recommend 2 things for you: Join a Performance Rights Organization If you haven’t done so already, (ASCAP, BMI, etc) because they will not only collect your royalties for you, but you can also create your own publishing name as well which will add another layer of copyright to your name. :)

Hey Jonathan, this may have been asked, but how do streams on Spotify or Apple Music count for consideration compared to a digital sale? This video recommended selling 400-500 units upon release. How does that equate with a digital stream? Is it more like 4,000 to 5,000 streams in comparison? Just curious.
Hey Tony! That’s actually a great question and I’ve been researching it a lot since I made this video. Billboard has kept the exact streaming numbers relatively quiet but I do notice from other artists I’ve spoken with or researched myself that I think you’re right. 5,000 streams of your album would definitely help although idk by how much. You can’t stream it yourself 5K times for example because Apple Music and Spotify have ways of tracking that -in fact Spotify can close your artist account if they catch you doing it :(. BUT that’s where social interaction comes into play -your family & friends can always stream it and help you out! 😉
And just FYI Billboard also announced recently that TH-cam views will be playing a role in charting too so it’d be a wise to make sure your songs are on TH-cam too! :)
Just thought I’d help you out, I’m pretty sure it’s 750,000 streams.
1500 streams from a paid subscription Spotify equal 1 album sale. Now if they are using a free Spotify then its like 3750 streams equal 1 album sale

Awesome, I’m glad you’ve found a distributor you like :). I just said I liked TuneCore cuz I’ve used them for 12 years and I really like their customer service but I know there’s a lot of great distributors out there. I’ve got friends who love CD Baby and know people who swear by DistroKid as well :) I think it just depends on the person but I’m glad you like them! 😊

So to my knowledge, US streams are what count for the US Billboard Charts, as each country has their own tracking system for music. BUT I don’t want to discourage you because the US is a huge consumer market for music. :)
Yes you can chart later! It’s easier during your first week but Lizzo didn’t chart until her Album was almost 2 years old so anything is possible! :)
500 digital sales? I saw that 1200 listens on spotify is 1 sale so is 500 x 1200 = 600k?

I coukdnt find the answer to this but does billboard count per sale or per u it sold? Example; if someone were to buy 10 copies on amazon pre order in one sale...does billboard see it as one sale or as 10 sale units?
It actually counts PER UNIT. So if your biggest fan bought 10 of your albums on amazon, to my knowledge that counts as 10 sales. :)

Great Question! So The Hot 100 track streams and sales (and everything I mentioned in this video) that occur within the US. It's a ranking system for "the hottest songs in America." haha
The Global 200 is a brand new chart that tracks sales/streams (and again, all of the above) that occur GLOBALLY. Since the US market, thanks to the internet, is becoming more and more open to foreign acts (breaking into the US Music scene is really difficult actually) Billboard wanted to start tracking "the hottest songs in the WORLD." This is why so far we've seen a lot of K-Pop and Latin entries on the Global chart -those music markets are currently very popular here in the US.
Truthfully, I'm very excited to see a much more diverse music chart! As a big kpop fan, I'm really happy to see BTS doing so well here and I'm excited to see what the future has in store! I hope this all makes sense! :)

Hey! That’s a great question! Actually singles count as a separate entity and have many other dedicated charts for them. If you still follow the steps in this video however you can really increase your odds of charting on those special charts too! Definitely always register with Nielsen so everything gets tracked! :)

@@Maxpainthegreat440 Thank you so much, that means a lot man! :) So actually, I would follow everything in this video - Register with Neilsen SoundScan, make sure you've got your ISRC/UPC, etc. Single Charts work similarly to album charts on Billboard although nowadays they REALLY consider social interaction as well. So make sure your fanbase is streaming the heck out of your single when it comes out! IDK what the actual sales number is but I will definitely look into it and if I find out -I'll let you know. :)

Have a couple questions was hoping you could help with.
1. Does Nielsen soundscan track physical albums sold online through shopify?
We have our isrc and upc codes all submitted and we've sold physical pre-orders online through our store. We are worried soundscan has no way of tracking them.
2. How can we check billboard charts like heat seekers, top new artist, independent album, etc. without paying for billboard pro?
Hey! Great questions. Yes, Nielsen does track physical albums online through shopify but you have to make sure you're using a shopify app like Single Music for example. Shopify itself doesn't report but if you use a Neilsen-reporting app then yes it will count! :) (Single is the one I recommend)
Secondly, no unfortunately. I wish there was!! You can always just join for the time of your release then cancel when your term expires. It's probably the easiest option so you don't keep paying for something you may not necessarily need. Hope that helps!

Can i ask? Is the billboard works worldwide? The charts named as 'u.s billboard hot 100' so many ppl thinks its only counting streams on u.s only lol, sometimes they got bored to stream they think the chart is only for u.s 🤷🏻♂️
Billboard does work worldwide (as in anyone can chart) but yes, it’s true, only sales and streams made from within the US count toward the Billboard charts. Hope that makes sense!

@@cjcaday3812 So basically it means that any artist can get on Billboard but only the streams/sales that are made within the US count in the calculation for chart placement. For example, Harry Styles is an artist from the UK but he had enough fans streaming/buying his song "Watermelon Sugar" that live in the USA and therefore he got #1 on the Billboard Hot 100! :)

Great question! To my knowledge, they do not at this time. I think Billboard still views SoundCloud as it’s own thing but at the very least I’m sure it probably counts toward the “social interaction” aspect. 👍🏼

I am curious to know why Indian Music NEVER charted on Billboard. I may be exaggerating but some of our artists have songs that easily fall in the top-tier and are total bops. Has it got something to do with language? cuz if it does, Why the hell did BTS make it to the top. If you listen to songs like Bom Diggy Diggy, you may agree with me. I know our recent songs are crap remixes of old songs but more than a century of Indian Music and no recognition from Billboards. We also have crazy amount of views on literally everything Tseries then why overlook our artists? Somebody Explain
Part of the reasoning is due to the fact that Billboard is a US-based music chart system and the US market is notoriously difficult to break into. BTS and K-Pop is only really recently breaking through into the main music market. Billboard understands this as our world gets more and more connected online which is why they recently launched the Global 200 songs and Global 200 Excluding the US charts in order to show more worldwide representation. They only launched a few weeks ago but Indian artists definitely are eligible! I would love to see it more as well. :)

Hey! Yes, when I say 6-8 weeks in advance, that's when your pre-order date should start and then after those 6-8 weeks have passed is when your music should be OUT. :)

Ok update: I found this article that will hopefully help you out. It looks like YES Shopify does report to Nielsen but you’ll need to use the app called “Single Music.” I think you’ll still need to register everything with Nielsen but it looks like you can do that from in the app. Let me know how this goes and keep me updated! 💜

Should we copyright our song before or after my release, will that affect my release if I copyright the song before my release
Hey! Copyrighting music is complicated and I’m not a lawyer and I am working on a video about this too, but here’s what I’ll say. When you’re song is made and released publicly, that is already a layer of copyright for your music, especially if you are the writer and publisher. However, you can always look up the specific copyright laws in your country to make 100% sure. Here in the USA, you have to file with the US copyright office which takes some time to do. I can tell you that doing so after you release your song won’t affect your song’s performance one way or another too much :)

It does! It's just that the Billboard Top 200 albums chart usually has much higher thresholds and competition. It varies week-by-week though! :)

If you sell 500 k tickets on your concert so will it be add on the album sales ???
Unfortunately no. As of this year Billboard recently announced that concert tickets and merchandise/album bundles will no longer be included in their chart ranking system. 😔

How many streams would you need? Cause most people will listen to your track ok Spotify and TH-cam.
So the new industry metric is 1,250 streams from a paying user and 3,750 streams in total from non-paying users count as one sale. So the exact amount can vary depending on whether or not the listener subscribes to Spotify premium or TH-cam Music. So for easy math, you’d need over 560,000 streams on Spotify strictly from paying users in order to meet that 450 sales threshold and potentially qualify. From strictly non paying users, you’d need over 1.687 million streams to meet that threshold. Luckily you’ll likely get a combo of both on a variety of platforms instead of ONLY Spotify :) Hope that helps!

That’s awesome! So exciting! Oh I absolutely will. The music industry can be unnecessarily competitive so my channel is for artists to come together and share information. Anything I learn in my own music business, I’ll always share too. What works and what doesn’t. :) I think for a really long time people locked “secrets” like how to get on billboard behind paywalls or there was it this unspoken secret that you “couldn’t tell.” I’m not about that! 😂 I’m out to help the best I can :)

Jonathan you were very informative. I released a song in March right as the pandemic started. I'm not able to get out and promote and asking people to purchase is like pulling teeth. I just saw someone on the billboard charts with only 534 views on TH-cam. I'm not in competition but I know my song is of better quality with 389 views on TH-cam. I'm registered with tunecore. Where is the link to get my song more play?
I totally understand. Well if you're asking where the link is on your TH-cam Video to share it to try and get more plays, you can find it under the "share" option. There are also a lot of fake companies offering "real plays" for videos but Nielsen has a way of detecting fake video views so don't fall for those. Just keep growing your following and fanbase and inspire them to keep watching your video and share it! :)
