  • After the trip to Whittaker the D&GVR gave participants to railfan weekend a free ride on the Durbin Rocket with Moore-Keppel & Co. #3 including photo runbys. What a nice treat! Unlike the other railfan weekend videos I decided to post all the footage for this run instead of choosing the best runby from each train. One note is that I have never seen number three slip like at this even before! I have my suspicious but I wish not to state them here...
    Shots 1 & 2: The Durbin Rocket thunders into Hevener Station and in the second shot slips like crazy. I tried to zoom into the slip, but was too late. Sorry for that!
    Shot 3 & 4: Old number three rounds the curve near the tiny town of Nottingham passing by a remote house we all know and love. Once again I must apologize, but this time for the wind sound. Take note of the scraping noise in the 4th shot, I have no idea what this is.
    Shot 3: To everyone's surprise two deer jump in front of the rocket right before she stops to take on water at Elk Creek. Oh Dear! If only we were a few seconds ahead of schedule we could have had some nice venison for dinner at Durbin!
    Shot 5: To everyone's surprise two skittish deer jump in front of the Durbin Rocket right before she comes to a stop at Elk Creek. Oh Dear!
    Shot 6: I grabbed this shot to catch the piston and flywheel spinning if she slipped getting back up again after filling up with water. Of course it didn't happen and then happened in the next shot!
    Shot 7: Moore-Keppel & Co. #3 performs the last runby of the weekend giving us a happy tune from her whistle as she passes the photo line.
    I know this isn't the last Railfan Weekend 2015 but it is the last shot so I will give my thank you on this video and the last video put out.
    I would like to thank Big Jim Productions, Grady Smith and Casshews members from the cinder car for making this event more special to me than it was already out to be. Hope to see you all again!
    But nobody reads the description!

    This gal is a real beauty. I was in the cab on a special excursion in April and there was wheel slippage while I was in the cab for a runby, and wheel slippage when I was out of the cab at Nottingham.

    Is this locomotive two-speed transmission?

    • @thundervallie
      @thundervallie 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No, this is a Class B Climax which didn't have a "transmission," some of the Class A Climaxes had some form of two-speed though. I think there is a replica of a Class A somewhere out there but I'm not sure if it has that.

    Dude!! I didn't know there would be photo runbys! Otherwise I may have done that too! I'm glad to see this video though...and I'm glad we got to chat that weekend. And yes, some people do read the descriptions! ;)

      Big Jim Video Productions I didn't know there was going to be photo runbys either and I also did't know it was free! I thought it was just a advertisement and even if it was it would have worked on me!

    Would be awesome if Durbin Rocket Climax 3 meets up with the restored Cass Climax 9 for a doubleheader in the future.

    is he like a logging tank engine with bogie wheels at each end?

    • @Geardproductions
      @Geardproductions  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The pistons drive a set of gears and rods that power the 2 trucks or bogies.

    Hopefully this old girl gets her time in the Cass shop soon to return to operation. Hope Cass gets #9 running this smooth, something just sounds "off" when she is working compared to this sister Climax.

      Yeah, the chuffing is off cycle with the steam cylinder exhaust, they've got some fine-tuning to do, but word has it the old girl is getting dialed in little by little. I've been following her build progress for years.

    Компактный,достаточно мощный для своего класса,паровоз .Но чувствуется,что на подъёмах ему не хватает крутящего момента на колесах,из-за малого диаметра ведущих колес и проскальзывание их по рельсам из-за недостаточной массы паровоза при увеличении давления в паровых машинах начинается пробуксовка,из-за чего машинисту приходится сбрасывать тягу,убавляя обороты!Поэтому он и едет в подъемы медленно!Понимаю,что ему не хватает сцепления с рельсами, особенно в сырую погоду!Делаю вывод,что это был маневровый,компактный паровоз,для короткого пробега,например в рудниках или угольных разрезах,или на формировании составов на узловых станциях!!Если я не прав,буду рад если Вы меня поправите!!)))Очень интересная конструкция! Спасибо за видео!!!

    Sounds like #7470's whistle from NH!

    • @henrybrightonmusicuploads
      @henrybrightonmusicuploads 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brian Falzon Well 7470 has the same whistle, but she also has two others she wears more often then it. It’s a Boston and Maine 3 Chime, and the other two whistles she has are a Boston and Maine Peanut 5 chime, and her original whistle, a Canadian National 6 chime. They don’t really use the 5 or 3 chime on 7470 since she came back from overhaul.

    Is it me or do engines in the US blow their whistles for a lot longer at a time than in the UK?

    • @Engineerrick
      @Engineerrick 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the U.S we use the long.....long....short.. long.... whistle at all grade crossings. If it is a tourist railroad or a photographer runby then anything goes and usually the more whistle the better. In the U.K it seems a few toots is enough.

    2:01 what kind of locomotive is that odd thing

    • @kingofthepod5169
      @kingofthepod5169 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's called a climax. It's an old school logging engine. Not very fast but has more torque than a bulldozer. Good for heavy loads, right turns and steep grades. Not good anything over 7 miles an hour.

    • @EndlessFilmLimited
      @EndlessFilmLimited 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Trains Of Kansas2 #3 is currently down for repairs. However, in the meantime the line between Durbin and Cass that was abandoned has been rebuilt and when she re-enters service she will be running on that line again.

    They forgot to fill the sand dome ??

    • @beltfed4624
      @beltfed4624 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope, they rarely use sand, mainly because it wears on the wheels and tracks, and amounts to costly repairs. At Cass, they usually have a booster locomotive at the rear or front, in case the engines break traction. One time, everyone had to get off and walk to the next switchback on foot, because there were so many passengers that the Shay was just spinning (it was a bit of a rainy day).

    • @Geardproductions
      @Geardproductions  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is a logging locomotive. Climax locomotives along with other geared locomotives were used on rough track, tight curves and steep gradients. These conditions were typical of logging and mining railroads.

      @@tomlebudzinski7716 ....there's one on the Puffin Billy line down Victoria way, Australia. She's a '29 vintage and does 13klmh or 8mph. Still in use for the tourists on a narrow gauge line.

    • @beltfed4624
      @beltfed4624 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This particular rail line has been out of commercial freight use for a long time, it's sectioned off. It is only used for these scenic excursions now. I live in WV, we really take pride in having these old engines still running, for new generations to enjoy. If you ever get the chance, please stop on in and take a ride, it's really great. Cass Scenic Railroad is the best by far, though. They have Shays, a Heisler, and now a fully restored 3-truck Climax. Come on over sometime! 😊
