    now she is a star, and when a dog starts to find people and other dogs reinforcing in themselves you don't need to work with them anymore :) She is a lovely lovely dog. Every single dog in the video is a reactive dog in training or rehabbed. :)

    This is the absolute BEST way to work with dogs if they have reactivity issues. It is truly amazing how fast you see a dog reacting positively (mentally and physically) when using this.
    Thanks for posting such a great video! This will be shared :D

    I look forward to your DVD when it is finished. :D I have anxiety and social phobia problems which I believe worsens the aggression in two of my three dogs (my eldest had thyroid problems - since getting treated he is no longer willing to start fights). I find your relaxed approach to training very helpful as when I am relaxed - they are more tolerant of other dogs and more willing to listen to me!

    wow! this is fantastic, i've worked on "leave-it" but never broken down applying it to other things besides food, quite this way, simple and brilliant!... i see a few other videos listed from you that may apply to reactivity. we've worked on responding the leash pressure and look at that game, but i think that this might be the last piece in our puzzle. any other videos you have that might apply to a dog who is over-aroused by other dogs and not fearful (you have a lot of videos!) THANK YOU!

    Great video! We share our home with Polo, a rescue staffie who used to be great with other dogs in her previous home. She's always been a "worrier", and we work on calming, but after 3 offlead labs greeted her by jumping on her and scaring her, she became reactive with other dogs. I don't think it helps that I have become disabled since adopting her either. I really need to step up her loose lead work as I have to use a rolling walker or crutches and that's hard with a pulling dog! xx

    This is amazing I was watching other channels and I started feeling frustrated cause they have 4 month old puppies walking nicely but using prong collars and E collars and I really don't feel good about using those with my puppy cause even if they work somehow, I'm thinking much more about the emotional response of my pup and I want him to feel happy about doing things with me so I realized that loose leash walking is much more than just that and things like leave it help a lot, we are not perfect and I know it'll take much more time that using a quick fix like one of those tools to punish a dog but I rather take the long path and make everything a positive experience. I really can't thank you enough for this videos and your work, I'm from Mexico and where I live the majority of trainers and people in general believe that the dog should be punished, I remember taking my dog to a local petstore last week and I let my dog sniff and a lady told me that it was time to buy a prog collar cause he's supposed to walk just looking at me the whole time.... but that comment made me confirm that I love my dog and I wouldn't do it that way, I'm more than happy to let him sniff cause that's how he explores and learns about the world and he's only 8 months ❤️❤️❤️❤️ I wish people learned that punishment is not the only way to train a dog

    Great video... I am a huge fan.... I would love to see a really dog/animal aggressive dog overcome this issue with totally positive training... I appreciate the totally positive method and especially the way you explain it. I am trying to change my methods which include negative reinforcement to all positive.... but I am having a hard time with this issue with a truly animal agressive dog... my point of contention is when you do not have food and another dog is being agressive ...etc.
    Thanks

    You can practice settles together- settles on a mat further apart then closer. Kiko my chi never really liked the other dogs being near her until I started working on her settling nearer to them during training sessions, now they all lie in a big pile together. Chilling together is a nice behavior for dogs who dont want to play or interact in other ways.

    Another very informative video!! Thanks. I have a request. Please share tips on how to condition a dog that is afraid of humans. I do have some success by training them to be calm, starting with the distance and then adding criteria and build on. However, if you can, I request you to kindly make a video with this as the focus. Thank you very much.

    Hi EDog I have an aggressive dog and was initially advised to use more stick and carrot' methods ie lead jerks and telling him off and couldn't understand why the poor little fellow was getting worse. I changed over to distraction, calming and using Jean Donaldson's Bar Open Bar Closed to build up a CER which all helped but am now using Behavioural Adjustment Treatment and really turning him around. All these are purely positive

  • @kikopup
    @kikopup  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    "let's go" means "I am turning another direction" - its a way to cut off behavior you don't like. "Leave it" means "don't interact with that thing". The leave it is first trained by reinforcing a dog for backing away from something. (but always something the dog feels comfortable with). The idea is that you can be around the thing and your dog leaves it alone- say a dog comes to your house, you can tell your dog leave it so he doesnt interact with the dog that needs space and keeps a distance

    as long as its not about your treats you are holding. The same functions for dogs. Say you have a dog visiting your house and he doesnt like being greeted, you could simply tell your own dog "leave it".

    My dog also did this study Glass half empty” attitude in dogs
    to shows that dogs may exhibit pessimistic behaviour similar to humans, having the attitude that the ‘food bowl is half empty’. Measuring the emotional state of a dog is not an easy task; scientists have used human psychology research to claim results showing that dogs can be ‘optimists’ or ‘pessimists’.

  • @kikopup
    @kikopup  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    It depends what you mean by aggressive- if it is an abnormal problem in the brain, then there is little hope as the dog is acting because of a seizure etc. But if you mean aggression in dog with a normal functioning brain then yes, using counter conditioning is the best way- aggression is a natural way that animals cope. All dogs can be aggressive. So we lower stress, arousal and change their emotional response using conditioning- my dog Splash was human and dog reactive...

    I am starting with a default "leave it" of my other dogs bowl, an interesting discovery was that she would do a lovely look away, but then on the click or click word take it as a release to go to the end of the leash in attempt to eat the food. My error as my click or click word is also taken as a release word I know in agility. I had to think what was going wrong and thought I would share it incase anyone else has the same problem.

  • @EdiHeg

    I would love it if you could make a video on separation anxiety.. My rescue dog, Isa, was abused as a puppy and she is afraid of everything but me, which makes her kind of hard to train in the first place, bur we take baby steps and she now walks perfectly on leash, comes when called and knows sit on verbal cue and hand signal. The biggest issue right now is not her fear of dogs or other people, but her fear that I (too) will leave her....

    The dvd I just filmed no reactivity goes over a restraint... yes, he does not like it and it sounds like he as body sensitivity issues. Never punish a growl or it could turn into a bite out of the blue. Check out the video handling shyness- you can use those same handling exercises to begin working on changing his emotional response to being handled.

    Hi Emily, I'm wondering if negative pavlov associations of a cue can eventually become mostly positive? I like the "leave it" cue, and other cues - heel, come, etc. Many of them have met indifference during training, so I'm worried that it is detrimental to their effectiveness. If "come" is ignored 80% of the time, is it still possible to correct? I imagine the answer is yes, that it just takes much much longer!
    Thank you so much for making these videos, with such an amazing intention and technique.

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am not sure I understand exactly what you are asking. But I am thinking you are asking if a cue already has a bad association, can you change it? It's most likely faster to just create a new cue that has no association. But yes, you can change the emotional response to cues.

      I have had the same problem. Look up the engage/disengage technique. There's a PDF out there that explains it. The technique teaches your dog to look away from stimuli and eventually disengage from the stimuli, which empowers the dog to make the decision for himself to not react.

    @patriciavenant7728 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hello, thanx for all wonderful videos (I especially enjoyed those about reactive dogs) !
    I have two "technical" questions :
    1) what's the difference with the "let's go" cue ? (In my eyes it is only the word used to cue the behavior) ?
    2) I saw that the dogs who where training the "leave it behavior" were C & T when looking at you (the rottweiler) around friend, yorkshire + dog or the owner (the basset (?)) . But I also heard in several another tutorials that you made that you recommand NOT to C&T when the dog is looking toward you or the food (and I was quite desperate because I trained during weeks rewarding my reactive dog for turning his head when I was doing attention noise ;-) !) *
    So, it seems to be OK when we train something like "lets go" or leave it ?
    * I actually found it very useful to follow your tips when rewarding "doing nothing" or "being calm" behaviors.

    I have a dog who is afraid of other dogs. She will stand and let them sniff her, but quickly leaves as soon as she can. We try to keep away from excitable or overly friendly dogs, as she will snap out of fear. She rarely approaches other dogs, and never plays or acts sociable. My other dog is sociable, and tries to be friends, but she frightens the smaller one. Both have a basic leave it, so they can be kept apart, and I can get them to sit together for food, but is there more I can for them?

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes you could use it to manage the behavior in between training, but I suggest that you do set ups, where you have a family member your dog is comfortable with, walk past then move faster and faster past in your living room then your yard adn then on the street. You can mark and feed the dog for being calm and not reacting. This will help teach your dog that strangers arent these crazy beings that charge strait at them... that its a predictable behavior that even his family members do.

    Whenever I see this question posed I wonder what is meant by "truly aggressive". I imagine it means a dog who's way over threshold, which could be *any* dog under the right circumstances. The only reason the dogs in Emily's and other PRT videos don't look "truly aggressive" is that the dogs are not pushed over threshold. To do so might make a more exciting video or clearly show the viewers the undesirable behavior that's been resolved, but it's also counter-productive to helping the dog.

  • @kikopup
    @kikopup  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not really. It doesn't show the first part of teaching the leave it, you have to watch the first two episodes. By reinforcing your dog for backing away from food, you can leave food on the floor on a table and the idea is the dog doesn't go for it again... They dont have to watch you, the reason I want eye contact when first starting is to that the dog isn't looking at the trainers OWN treats, reinforcing a focus on food, but instead leaving something. You can reinforce looking else where
