10 mm head = 6 mm tread not 8 mm
Not guaranteed on automotive applications, odd head sizes are very common, particularly where they've used a fancy alloy.
Not always 😂
@@alanhat5252a "fancy alloy" on a brake calliper? Doubt it.
Mercedes should be paying you for all the work they make you do
You are not wrong 😊👍
I've been there only once a tough Transit van wheel bearing replacement used a 8 ft scaffolding pipe. Never again got a Torque Multiplier Wrench brilliant. 😬
Mel, when you're bouncing off the scaff bar, you should put a jack, or an axle stand, or a lump of wood under the end of the horizontal bar to support it, or you risk rounding the wheel nuts. ;)
That’s a good point thanks 🙏
That’s what I was going to say about using an axle stand to stop wheel brace from sliding off and damaging wheel nuts.
You also risk getting yourself seriously hurt jumping on a wrench like that, supported or not.
Great news my vans the same it’s a 58 plate I have everything crossed when I go for a MOT lol 😂 but if he said it’s solid you may get more than a year out of the van 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
😮 what a job, looks like hard work. I agree, especially a vehicle that size, should have a mot.
Keep up the good work my lad. Very manly
Thanks, will do!
Hi mel i would have used copper slip on the back of the brake pads and on areas where the pads sit to stop brake squealing and pads seizing up
Get yourself some plusgas instead of wd40
Yeah got some 😊👍
Well done Mel, respect for your patience and stoicism. I spent too many miserable days under axles in my younger days grappling with brakes in the freezing rain/snow with skinned and bleeding knuckles cursing under my breath to even think about tackling that job now. Very happy to leave it to the professionals these days. Very informative video though.
Thank you 😊
Same here Kevin, I detest working on vehicles pretty much anytime now tbh.
I would be running back and forth, from the shed to the carpark, I can't leave tools out there, so I'd need to stick them into the van just to fetch another tool I didn't realise I'd need; then there's the rain to dodge 70% of the time.
I don't own another vehicle, so if I needed another tool or part, a trip to the auto parts shop would mean a long walk, a bus or taxi.
It cost me £165 yesterday at my local garage for some electrical work, two issues, one was just a bulb and the other issue was some wiring corrosion which was a 30 years of age related thing.
A new front brake pipe was also fitted.
I got my van back later that day, no messing about, MOT retest is this Wednesday.
I don't mind putting some food on the table for those guys, it took me four years to eventually find a garage I can trust and rely on, now that's the most difficult part in my opinion Kevin.
Sometimes I enjoy working on my vehicles sometimes I hate it, being in the freezing cold in the p*ssing down rain under a car with rust in my eyes and oil in my hair is not fun. Problem I have is garages are overpriced and I can't trust the monkeys who have their hands on my pride and joys so I just have to grin an bare it take my time and do it myself.
Been therev
Heat from a blow torch and an air hammer impact gun is the better bet if they fail then you are in real trouble.
Well explained Mel its good when you work out how something works for your self 👍
So true!👍
3/4 " drive socket set , You will loose too much torque in the twist of the extensions etc
_DAMN RIGHT! And a 3 foot breaker bar - that's what I use._
Done this wid de toyota coaster bus ... never agins mate ..oh the language..make an aztec blush ..🤣😃🤣pip pips and carryon pilgrims
Haha 😂
You did well changing the back pads, plenty of meat on them, but the pads had rust jacking looking at them ,
Its a merc always tough .u did it in the end mel
Well done Mel....after all that hassle, swearing and lost skin getting the front wheel off, I'd have personally removed the caliper to clean the years of crud off with a wire brush, and for peace of mind, clean and lubricate the sliders as well...even though they were moving freely.
Hope the other side didn't cause anymore skin loss! 😉
Thank you for the advice at the moment i just want to make it road worthy
@@BigVanSmallWorld I totally understand 👍....it's just with it pushing you to the edge, I thought it would be a place you wouldn't want to go back to anytime soon. 😉
Mate! It’s a bloody Mercedes! Get a Rattler! Drown it in Diesel & come back in 2Days! By the way you didn’t happen to mention how much the parts were??? 💰🤑🙈💰🤑🏦💰💰💰💰👈🏿
Thank you for the advice 👍
Hi Mel, just done the pads and discs on my 2007 ex cherry picker Vario. I feel your pain. Getting the rear hubs off was a challenge! Can't wait to see the next installment of the build.
Thank you and good luck with your project 👍
Why aren't you using copper grease on the brake pads ?
I did
@@BigVanSmallWorld ah, it wasn't obvious in the video.
Mel, looks a nice clean van, my brothers camper was an 814, where he raised the back of the roof , to allow stairs to a bedroom, and in front some decking to sit out on...looked really cool, but cant show a picture here..we both have latest model Iveco Daily High roof Lwb, 3ltr High8 autos now converted to campers, not so cool to look at , but fuel consumption full timming around Europe has less impact on the wallet..🤣
Nice 👍
You weren't heavy enough.
Lol 😂
I thought for a minute you were trying to undo the wheel-nuts the wrong way .... I had a twin-wheel transit many moons ago .... I tried for ages to undo the front wheel-nuts - ONLY to find one side were left-hand threads supposedly to stop them coming undone ......
Haha I did check 👍😅👍
Mel how can I get another of your stickers please, also has Becky got any yet, great informative video buddy, all the best to you and Becky
Send me your address and I’ll send you some melpettipher@msn.com
They don't make brake discs like they used to. I had a 40 year old Datsun still on the originals with plenty of meat left.!
Brilliant 😊👍
Could you please explain why a cherry picker is MOT exempt..
Yes I can it’s because they are classified as plant / machinery and owned by local authorities it’s crazy
Why o why did you go out and buy a tractor not any old tractor a Vario tractor
Bloody hell Mel I hope you have shit loads of money
🤣🤣🤣👍love the vids keep them coming
I’m taking my time with this one because I don’t have any rush
The offended stud is normally called a BAR STUD 😂
Haha
Im surprized mel that that old lady has disc on the rear, are you putting copper grease on wheel bolts,im about yo replace the raer struts and coil in winter,i wish my mot was in the summer 😂
Yes copper slipped everywhere love the stuff 😂👍
Mel, you need to get yourself a torque multiplier. I had this when I 1st moved onto the 6.5t+ vans. It’s come in handy time after time even when the windy gun and impact drivers have been defeated.
Also invest in 1 inch drive socket sets, they cope with the bigger nuts and bolts far better, and less likely to bend when jumping on them!
Thank you I’ll have a look into getting one 👍🤓👍
You need 3/4 a/f bar.
Hi mel just a quick tip when i change pad etc i put a bit of copper grease on the back side of the pads stops squeaks and a bit on the wheel studs 😊
Thanks 😊
Heat. Everytime heat.
Dont you put any copper grease on the backs of the breakpads to stop them rattling
Yes I did but at the same time don’t want to get it on my camera
Epic ! And mildly entertaining 😎
Thank you 😊
Nearside caliper is usually the worst, i always start there
Wow Mel what a ballache
Great fun isn’t it with twin cylinders. By the way it might be a good idea to change brake fluid whilst you’re at it if you don’t know how long it’s been in there, it absorbs water.
Great point!
@@BigVanSmallWorld that's another job to get someone else to do -- they've got somewhere to dump the toxic fluid.
Didn't understand much but it was bloody interesting, thank you.
Thank you 🙏
the important thing to note is the high levels of cussing that goes with brakes.
MEL!!!!! will you please put a guard on your grinder. I think i speak for many on that one.. DONT want people thinking it ok to do that !!!! I hope to see a guard on that thing in the future. Also who was the inconsiderate git playing music while you were doing your thing. what a selfish pratt. you wanna nip that behaviour in the bud !!
Thank you that’s a really good point I think I need a new one
yes please do get a new one or at least a guard for yours. looking forward to your new build. nice project !!@@BigVanSmallWorld
Crikey 😮
Nice old big. Van
Sure is
Mel You should have pump the footbrake hard before you applied the handbrake . This will mess the handbrake up so it won’t work properly
It's air over hydraulic on those - separate system.
Thanks for the advice really appreciated
I am proper loving this mate,..
That’s nice to know thank you 👍😊👍
Good job Mel 👊👊👊
Thanks 😁
We bought a old farm machine years ago went every day for a week and sprayed all the nuts and bolts with wd40 managed to undo all the nuts and bolts with out a problem good luck with your new van build 👍
Great tip! Thanks 😊
Diesel is an alternative that some people swear by (it's not yet worked for me though).
Don't soak with penetrating fluid though -- if it dries out it makes the situation worse.
You can still soak with WD40 when penetrating fluid hasn't worked.
Them wheel nuts are over tightened
No shit Sherlock
That thing is going to be a Money Pit Mel
I’d rather put money into this project than put money into a greasy landlord’s pocket
Heya this is my dream van, silly question but I am sure i met you many years ago when i worked in Strood in kent, if you remember Donny who worked in Wilko. Small world if it is you haha nice channel and video though. Subbed
Yes I do remember you you’re Angies friend 🤙 you have a great channel you should definitely make more videos especially now winter’s coming up try doing a winter survival camping type thing they do really well 👍🤓👍
@@BigVanSmallWorld awesome I thought it was you mate. Your face popped up on thumbnail and maybe because I’m obsessed with vario and vanlife but I thought I know him haha and was hoping TH-cam would be an income to afford to do it also
Awesome to see that you’re doing so well mate. Thank you I’ll give it another go this winter my last few trips I didn’t record because can’t seem to get the views or likes it interest from people.
I’ll keep eye out for what you’re doing and can’t wait to see the vario absolute dream van
Why don't you buy a torque convertor to undo nuts
I’ve got one now 👍😊👍
Hi Mel where are you working from is it a community workspace or something?
Yes it is
@@BigVanSmallWorld How does it work. I would like to access one in the Hertfordshire Bedfordshire area to work on my van.
Put a jack under the end of the wheel key to help keep it level and to stop twisting.
Thank you 🙏
What's a "wheel key"? it's a term I've not heard. (things get different names in different places)
@@alanhat5252 Anything that's used to undo a wheel nut...a 6-way wheel nut wrench (nicknamed a 'spider') would be a great example, you can brace it on the opposite side to keep it level Alan, to avoid it twisting downwards and rounding off the nut.
You need to eat more donuts 🍩 😂
😂
A great video Mel, well done. Your previous mechanics experience came in handy on that job. You could do with an impact gun and compressor for the shed, it would have made it a bit easier to free up those tight bolts, and since you appear to be in a place where old varios come for a second chance of life, everybody could make use of it. The restoration of this van will make a superb video series, and will be a good educational video for those that come after you. I love mechanical info, and you've done a great job of explaining both the problems and the solutions. Well done.👋
Thank you I do hope someone will find this helpful 👍
And now the hard work begins 🤭
Well done Mel , very informative , thankyou . Looking forward to the interior build
Thank you 😊
another great vlog mel
Thank you 😁
Had a similar problem getting the wheel studs loose on a 307d Merc that I once owned.
On the point you made of mots on vehicles like yours not done it's the same for agricultural vehicles like tractors and they use them for towing trailers carrying crops that can weigh around 20 tons on public roads and I do believe this to be wrong.
Yeah definitely not right for them to be mot exempt
it's still got to be roadworthy & if it isn't they're often harsher than if you've got an MOT.
👍🚐🐕👊
Why would you not clean and repack wheel bearing when doing brakes since they are not sealed bearing but do require regular cleaning and greasing?
Because i didn’t know until you mentioned it. I’m new to Varios so thanks for the heads up really appreciated 👍🤓👍
@@BigVanSmallWorld looks like the brakes will be coming back apart.
@BigVanSmallWorld and depending on rear differential the rear may have the same type of greased wheel bearings often neglected until they fail and that is big$$ compared to a few dollars in solvent and fresh grease.
😂😂😂 class video Mel, i have a 28 year old Toyota but luckily its pretty straight forward to take apart, ive had a few snapped 10mm bolts and a few stiff suspension components but so far so good, get yourself an impact gun Mel what a god send! Best tool ive ever bought. Save your hands and wrist 😂
(Ryobi brushless with 5ah battery)
Highly reccomend for price and quality!.....
Still though under the car in the p*ssing down rain, freezing cold, cut hands, rust in my eyes and oil in my hair i still do dread doing the work haha!
Thank you I’ve just gotten one 👍😅👍
You could use a small ratchet to wind back the piston
i would never attempt this but i learnt a bit a bout brakes
Glad you found it useful 👍
Would be easier if you jack the car up bud 😂
Legend Mel 👍🚐
Thank you 😊
Before putting the wheel nuts back on use copper grease on them. I’d put anti wheel indicators on. Saves a lot of pain when travelling many miles or abroad. A quick check each day!
Good tip!
Holy guacamole I didn't think you were going to get that front one off! What an enormous amount of work. If it had been me attempting that job the air would have been blue ... 😆... as it is my neighbors bring their small children inside when I am in the side yard working on my van! 😂 I can't wait to see what the next adventure is with your Vario!!
Thank you 🙏
Hi Mel, please watch the video posted by ''Basevan'' 1yr ago titled ''Mercedes Vario Dream Machine''. He bought it direct from the Fire Brigade, not auction, and it is so good not a thing needs any attention, it is practically like new. It is 08reg, Only 60,000 miles, Fire Service maintained, and it even has Automatic Transmission! A dream van indeed, what do you think?
I think he may have sold it buy now
# Hi Mel, love watching your videos, great content and I really look forward to watching them. I know you like a quick question so here it is : are you making your content members only ? Not really seeing much content from you lately. Thanks Paul
Yes I do!
Top job 👍 you need a rattle gun !!….
I’ve got one now 😊👍
they make life a lot easier but the big one you need for stubborn wheelnuts you don't really use for anything else so unless you're taking wheels off all day they're uneconomic.
Nice one, Mel. Thanks. Would love to get me a Vario.
You should!
they're good solid trucks though the skirt around the bottom of the panel vans can get frilly. (it's not structural so you can fibreglass it)
That was a brutal brake Chang e mate well done I’ve got To do my discs and pads as an adviser on my mot not looking forward to that
Good luck 🤞
Hi Mel, Love your channel. What happened to Waffle on a Wednesday? I have a question for you.
It’s coming back soon 👍🤙
Handy them compressor nut removal guns..😂
Yeah you’re not wrong the crazy thing is I have one but no longer have a compressor
I glad you didn't do both fronts at the same time , would have had to bring the stretcher on ! Not quite the same but had to do 4 mini drums stuck solid a while ago .
Thanks for the concern 😊👍😅
Great stuff, Mel - really interesting and entertaining to watch. 👍🙂
Glad you enjoyed it
Mel your a nice man but your channel has move on to working in a garage and it’s not vanlife anymore hit the rd again get out there traveling around but now you don’t need a van you have become garage life and it’s so bloody boring mate ☹️
Lol
A mechanic once showed me a way to undo tight wheel nuts. Jack the van up, attach the wrench to the nut with the arm touching the floor and then lower the van to use the van weight to crack the nut.
What stops the wheels from moving?
That doesn't work on a wheel that can rotate, it also seriously overloads the tool, potentially firing bits of broken tool across the workshop.
Provided it's insured it can be driven to a pre-booked appointment with someone that's got a heavy-duty impact wrench, alternatively, call out a lorry tyre fitter.
Assistant with foot on brake
@@bigfist255 Or a stick jammed down on the break pedal if by yourself.
The phrase "patience of a saint" springs to mind👼
Thank you 🙏
Well done that man !
Thank you 😊
Class stuff Mel. I'm very tempted to pick up a Vario, only thing is obtaining a C license which will be done eventually.
Question, are you aware of any available upgrades for the entertainment system and instrument cluster? A touch screen multimedia would be excellent.
I don’t think I know of any
It's a C1 (up to 7.5t) license which doesn't need periodic refreshment.
I believe you can get them replated downwards so can be then driven on a normal licence 👍
@@BigVanSmallWorld ..The search begins.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
What no anti squeal paste Copper slip
Give me a break I’m filming and didn’t want to get copper slip all over my camera
@@BigVanSmallWorld Oh Well !
Hi Mel, great video and well done on cracking that last wheel nut, When sliding the pistons back, as you said use old pad and pry bar, then get a G clamp and wind it back even more.
Good tip thanks

I’m sorry Mel I’ve watched your videos for so long now your quite a capable guy but just lately you have become like a wet week end you no what has to be done in anything you do just get on and get it done

I’m doing what I do and have done for years
From having mercs of that era i ended up with lots of modified spanners and other tools. then as you have shown its all about the nack and knowing it.
Thank you
Can't tell you how useful it is to watch you work on the Vario ( and I can see its a big pain in the ASS!) . I have motorhome based on the LP 813 merc chassis and a lot of this is transferable . Excellent stuff ! Thanks for the clear explanations too .
I’m happy to hear that my videos are helpful thank you for your positive feedback really appreciated and good luck with your projects 👍🤓👍
their is no such thing as mot exempt every vechile on the public roads has to be checked and be safe .
Vehicles that do not need an MOT
Exempt vehicles
Other vehicles that do not need an MOT include:
goods vehicles powered by electricity and registered before 1 March 2015
tractors
some historic (‘classic’) vehicles
A list of exempt types of vehicles is on the MOT exemption form (V112). You need to fill in the form if your vehicle is listed so that you can either tax it or apply for tax exemption.
mercedes do not make brake pads, a rgird party makes them for them, they sell the same pads on the open market for a fraction of the cost of "genuine" mercedes parts, all manufactures are the same, they parts bin build a lot of common components......
