I favor Shavkat but this is an incredibly tough task. Wonderboy’s movement, diverse kicks, solid hands, use of angles, and ability to blitz will prove to be quite a challenge for Shavkat’s lack of head movement. Also, Shavkat isn’t extremely proficient (that we know of) at shooting blast doubles or using any other traditional wrestling methods. He usually does his best work when his back or his opponents back is along the cage, where he looks to knee or find a trip somehow. I think he will eventually find a way to takedown Wonderboy. And when he does get him down his top control is very heavy and he has nasty ground and pound too… plus a good submission game. but if he can’t… I think it will get increasingly more difficult for him to win.
The punching damage of Shavkat during transitions and on the ground could be big factor too...he's so good at attacking around the clock and hits hard too. That could definitely create a toll on Wonderboy over three rounds! But not a good matchup for Shavkat at range.
I think Wonderboy has the perfect style to beat Shavkat. The problem is: age. Wonderboy is the oldest fighter in the top 15, I think a young and hungry Shavkat will be too much for him. I heard people saying that Shavkat's offensive wrestling is overrated, but you know whose else is overrated? Tyron Woodley, and he made it against Wonderboy still
I think that’s perfectly said. A lot of intangibles could push the fight in Shavkat’s favor, but Wonderboy’s speed and mobility (on paper) pose problems.
Stephen Thompson has been slowing down since in his prime he's been able to stay off the fence with his ringcraft. However, you made a great point about wonderboy's box. At Wmma today ghost and drake called it the tracks. Wonderboy seems to be really good if the opponent is coming to him. So it might be a good idea to draw Wonderboy as the aggressor and take him down that way for Shavkat. Either way, great breakdown Chris. I look forward to todays podcast
Shavkat's gonna knee Wonderboy to the body initiating and in the clinch, and it's going to be not fun for him. I don't see how Wonderboy wins. Also Shavkat tried a ton of takedowns against Neal, but Neal is Neal, while Wonderboy has the perfect stance to get kneepicked from. This is a plainly obvious fight to predict, Neal was probably his hardest matchup in the division stylistically and he flew past him.
great vid! i think wonderboy is very underrated in this matchup. shavkhat is dangerous everywhere, but wonderboy’s TDD is pretty underrated, and shavkhat’s TD’s are kind of lacking tbh. he’s creative cuz he sinks in submissions out of nowhere, but even after swinging cowboy oliveira around he still had a hard time getting TD’s. and we saw what geoff neal was able to accomplish on the feet once he stuffed TD’s, imagine what wonderboy could do. now with that said, shavkhat is the fighter who can make the biggest improvements in between fights and it’ll be a huge challenge for wonderboy. but i also think it’ll be a much bigger challenge for shavkhat too than what the oddsmakers have it.
Thanks, and totally! Way more tape out there on Wonderboy than Shavkat, but it does feel like folks are talking about Thompson like he’s fallen off a cliff already. Still a big threat to anyone!
@@ChristianBale-ks8nm that is something i totally forgot, and very likely did affect the fight. thanks for the reminder! i think wonderboy’s horse stance gives him a decent center of gravity no?
If you are banking on Shavkat having poor takedowns you are in for a huge surprise 😂 it’s pretty obvious. Shavkat should win. He’s going to take him down and pound him. Of course wonderboy can win by some crazy punchers/kickers chance
Belal, God bless him. He’s just not a fighter who makes waves. But he’s doing the work. There are the fighters that just quietly make their way to the top. Let’s go. Wonderboy
I know, I don't see why he wouldn't get the next crack, especially if it's against Leon Edwards. There's history there too which makes it better. But I have bad feeling we won't get that fight soon.
Stephen Thompson need to study how Shara Bullet dominate on standing against the wrestler. If can stop the take down like Shara Bullet did he have the chance
Wonderboy is my hot take as well to win. I actually picked both Burns and Belal over Wonderboy and helped a friend make some bucks off of Belal beating Wonderboy. The reason why I thought Burns and Belal could take Wonderboy down were not just their technique, but also their physical attributes. Both Belal and Burns are short, stocky and very strong. So I thought even if they telegraph the first takedown, they can finish the followup takedowns with a combination of strength, low center of gravity, and technique. I don't think Shavkat is going to have that luxury because Shavkat is more long and lanky. So, consequently, I think Shavkat is going to have to strike with Wonderboy for a bit before getting those takedowns. And Shavkat did get rocked quite a bit against Geoff Neal and is quite ploddy. I think Wonderboy has seen these types of fighters before many times throughout his career, and will take the fight to Shavkat on the feet. Shavkat might shoot for takedowns but, I'd imagine he is not as strong as Burns or Belal, or have that relentless chain wrestling style like both of them. If Shavkat's takedowns fail, he will disengage and go back to striking.
Exactly my thoughts too! Well said. Shavkat's positives on the feet is that he doesn't telegraph much and has good power, so even if losing to Thompson on sheer volume he can still end the fight any time. Insanely hard to pick overall.
Shavkat Rakhmonov will takedown Stephen Thompson and submit him. Shavkat is big strong welterweight while wonderboy takedown defense has rapidly declined and he doesn't need to takedown wonderboy down to get a submission. If it was 2015 wonderboy Thompson yes it would've been interesting fight. Wonderboy tough fights are against good wrestlers/grapplers
I’m curious if Shavkat will attempt a broader wrestling attack against Thompson or if he’ll rely on throws. Wonderboy’s TDD has gotten decent but can never catch up with an expert.
@@kenwahldhlamini8102 wonderboys gonna finish Shavkat fairly easily. It’ll be an easy day in the office. WB on the road to capturing the WW belt, Belal will have to wait.
True. That's why he has never made any sound on-line, unlike MAGA man, Garry, Conor et al. He was MADE to fight Colby only because Colby's Dad said if Leon didn't agree to fight, that his belt would be taken away and be given it to Colby. Colby, BTW, was the same one who wanted to fight Leon 3-4 years ago. Leon also refused to fight Colby back then. Everyone knows Leon's scared to fight real fighters. All the ones he fought were amateurs, as the best Welterweight in history, Colby, said.
