Such a beautiful version of this song. So many people have recorded it over the years but I feel this is one of the best. Sadly Israel IZ Kamakawiwoʻole died at the age of 38 in 1997. "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" was written for the 1939 film "The Wizard Of Oz" & was sung by actress Judy Garland.
IZ is an inspiration and was loved by all. I was at Makua when they spread his ashes from the Hokule'a. Cars stopped along the 2 lane road leading to Ka'ena bringing traffic to a stand-still. Hundreds of people were wading in the water and hundreds more were on land. A procession of big rigs blew and held their horns echoing through the valley while his ashes were placed into the ocean making it sound as if the State of Hawaii was crying . . . it's a moment I will never forget. An incredible celebration of life for an incredible man!!
I'm a 4th generation Native Hawaiian Japanese, IZ was and ALWAYS will be our greatest national treasure. Your response was quite lovely. Mahalo (thank you).
You are thinking the movie Moana, Duane Johnson voiced the character Maui. Yes they are similar in appearance. Would be nice if they channeled Iz for the character. Duane is very connected to his roots I wouldn’t be surprised if they did. Love how he does this song, just beautiful. Much Respect

He called up the studio at 3am and told them he had to come in now and record this song. He then went there and recorded this in one take

Eva Cassidy also does a beautiful version.
He's precious!
Best version of this song hands down
There is an animated short that Disney did “I lava you” and the two volcanoes are modeled after IZ and his wife and their love

Such an amazing song. Gives me chicken skin every time seeing them spread his ashes.
Это нормально. Я сам в шоке каждый раз, что он ушёл. Но он ушёл красиво, на радуге!
Hawaii legend 🔥🤙🏼
This is better than Dorothy’s Verizon
it's a Ukelelee , and they are alot of fun to learn and play .
❤❤
Israel died from respiratory failure. He was 38 and was 1,000 pounds
He wasn’t 1000lbs…at most he was just over 750
💯
The Rock did the voice on the Disney movie. It made a lot of local HawIians angry as it portrayed them (especially Samoans) as being extremely obese
Maui wasn’t obese in the movie though he was very muscular….
👍🙏
and i thought the judy garland version was amazing
