FACT #41: The guy who discovered Tasmania, New Zeeland, and your country of 25 million people called Australia, was actually Dutch and called Abel Tasman.
Two videos you might want to watch regarding the Netherlands being below sea level: The Delta Works (protection of Zeeland and port of Rotterdam): th-cam.com/video/76sFFiwPJ9E/w-d-xo.html Zuiderzee Works (creation of Flevoland province): th-cam.com/video/_LSVNW_bPqs/w-d-xo.html
In the 17th century, there were 16.000 windmills in Holland. Amsterdam was the biggest grain market in Europe. The windmills made flour of the grain. The Dutch invented the crankshaft so these windmills could saw wood. A windmill produced more sawed wood then 32 men could do. That is why they could produce so many boats. In the Golden Age, Holland had more boats/ships then France, England and Spain together.
Good morning Tash this video was great. Learned a lot about the Netherlands through this. I also love those tulip fields so beautiful. It really is amazing how they have built their country from the sea, very strong resilient people. Really enjoyed watching, take care🫶
*Veluwe park is beautiful in summer all purple with heide in between dense forest. wild pigs, deer, wolfs, baggers, sheep lots of them, foxes, woodpeckers squirrels in autum its the leafs are yellow and red and green and braun, in winter with snow its beautiful too. *Biesbos is nice to go with kano or sub. small waterways with islands in a swamp like forest. and lots of animals you can spot like foxes, deer, icebirds, owls, sea hawks, bevers. But every park has its own beauty been to a lot of them, but these i love very much. And cool thing, we have almost no poisonous animals, 1 type of adder but it so rare i only seen 1 in 40 years and there in a very small part of the Netherlands.
We have Valentines Day in the Netherlands, it also a commercial thing too. But most people do not celebrate that day, it is more something you could do, like buying some flowers for your wife, girlfriend or someone you really like. About flowers: tulips aren't very expensive, prives vary from 5 to 20 euro. You can even buy 50 for 20 euro's. Roses are the most expensive ones.
The Dutch began to built dikes in the 12th century. For 4 centuries, all men and many women between 18 and 40 from all villages would go to 2 or 3 villages in the winter (when the cows were in the farms and not on the land) and built dikes together. In this way, they made 25.000 kilometer of dikes. There are 5 times more stones in these dikes then in all the pyramids of Egypt.
Hey Tash, greetings from the other side 🌍 Although AI generated, this is actually one of the better AI video's about The Netherlands, factually correct and actual footage from The Netherlands! I can only disagree on the recommendation for tourists to grab a bike and explore. Biking in the bigger cities is not for the fainthearted; it's not just about technically being able to handle a bike and keep balance, but more about doing that in heavy (bike-)traffic! Better to stick to quieter places first. Also, these were not hidden gems but just the most stereotypical things about The Netherlands. While certainly worthwhile (especially if you visit the country for the first time) there are so many other places that are real hidden gems: medieval castles, (royal) palaces, fortress towns, medieval towns and cities, nature reserves and so on. And even we Dutchies are impressed when standing on the Oosterscheldekering or driving over the dykes through the sea ... Love your channel, keep up the good work!
The windmills were integral in them becoming a seafaring world power , they were used as timber mills , they could cut timber at such a scale that they were able build many more ships than anywhere else , they churned them out at an industrial scale outpacing all of their competitors, the bieschbos is a wetland national park
Hello Tash! Just looove your videos! Thank you for being here! To have some mindblowing facts, from, say, any tiny country.... on the other side of the globe.... Please see some videos about the Waddenzee (Wadden sea).
Actually Tulips might not have come from Turkey either. We got them from Turkey, yes I don't think there can be any doubt of that, but if my memory serves me right, they came to Turkey from Syria. I do need to check this to be certain, but it is a fact that Turkey was a mere stop over in this case.
The reason that we have so much windmills, old and modern metal ones for electricity, is that there is practically no day without (mostly west from the sea) any wind, because The Netherlands are flat!
We do have some light towers in Holland. The most famous is the brandaris on the island of Terschelling Brandaris Terschelling / David De Baere th-cam.com/video/UJ1ctWE0JWo/w-d-xo.html

Sort of Industrial Revolution before steam.
