I am itching to make some pillows from old linens. Nine years ago we down-sized, and my sewing machine got packed away (hubby promised I’d get it back when we were all settled). Now here we are, all settled for quite a few years, and the sewing machine is still in a box somewhere in the basement. Our first great-grand baby is due next summer, so I MUST rescue that old Singer! Thank you for the encouragement to stand my ground and insist that he find my machine! 😁 🧵
Or you could find a used one in a thrift shop if you don’t feel like looking, I saw a beautiful old vintage singer the other day at a Goodwill. The young man was buying it he must’ve been no older than 19.
Gosh I have a machine that I bought a hobby lobby 4 years ago when I moved from Connecticut to North Carolina and it's still in the box I wish it wasn't so heavy I would sell it at a reasonable price because obviously I'm just not going to use it I've never even opened the box once it's a singer
I bought a 1968 vintage Singer Fashionmate 237 for just $25 at a garage sale. The old man tuned it up for me for just $35. It sews like a dream, and it will last way longer than a new cheaply made plastic one. I love how you don’t ruin pristine vintage linens but save the good parts of old linens that have deteriorated. You could go to vendor fairs and sell them there. Then there’s no shipping.
Love what you do with old linens. I didnt think there was much of a market for these but i have about three totes of rescued linens to work with and i was blessed with a vintage Singer machine that has about 30 cams to make specialty zigzag stitches with. Its kind of fiddly to get the tension right but worth the effort to create border stitches on the linens as i stitch them to the case. Also, i use some of these pieces to make doll clothes for my antique dolls😊 TFS😊😊😊
Greetings from New Zealand. Your video came up in my home feed and I absolutely love this idea. Ive been making covers for my linen/sets of sheets, pillowcases, bed covers etc. I do this then put lavender bags in with them to keep the cloth smelling fresh. Embroideries, linens and cottons are precious to me. Adding these embroideries to my covers is a wonderful idea. Thank you for your video.
I have a big collection of old linens like this and also hand made crocheted doilies. I have made a couple of bags from the embroidered ones. I do machine embroidery but I love the hand embroidered things from the last century better. Love Love Love this project! I will be making something for my great grandaughter's room soon.
I just found your channel, and I have to say ... thank you. Thank you for showing what can be done without all the fanciest, latest gadgets and gizmos. Refreshing doesn't begin to describe the feeling!
❤❤❤❤❤ I LOVE old linens! I inherited a lot from family members plus “finds” at thrift shops. Thanks for the Molly Suds tip-never heard of it. Can’t wait to use your ideas. 😊
Erin, your pillows are gorgeous. I love how you have accented the linens with ribbons and buttons. Thank you for the tips on washing old linens. I have a number of linens made by my Mother-in-law who was such a talented seamstress and embroiderer. I need to get them out of their storage place and on display. You have given me inspiration.
Just found you ! I’m so excited!! What a great idea you are doing. Just think of the person that took her time to do that pretty kitty. It’s like saving her memory even if you didn’t know her. I will definitely check out all your videos. Thanks
Thanks for the ideas! I have three tubs full of old vintage linens from mother-in-law, her mother, my two grandmas and great aunt Ruth! I’ve wanted to make a quilt with them and now you have given me the courage to try it❤
Thank you Erin! What a lovely piece! You have given me inspiration to make a pillow with a dresser scarf I embroidered when I was 11 years old. I am 64 now. It has some stains but I can make a pillow with the good half.
Wonderful repurpose of linens and needlework, and if you have a airport gift shop you could go with some of the things you have made and see if you can get them to do consignment resale for you a split part of the profit, to not have to mail things anywhere. They would make fantastic last minute shopping gifts for people getting on planes to go where ever they are going, that are easy to put in a bag or just carry under their arms. Each is unique as you stated, and charge high price, they feel they are getting something very special for a loved one that cannot be replaced. You would do well. write up some kind of contract that is simple and straight forward. Go once a month to restock, and get copies of all receipts. Or sell them to antique stores, they will use them to enhance displays yet have them for sale. Just an idea or two for all your hard work. You could try to sell them at RV parks, as people would love to decorate with things that do not add excessive weight to the RV, but personalize the interior of their home. You could ask the park owner if you could do a Saturday trunk sale for the guests.
Very sweet. I took an old dresser runner my grandmother made for me when I was young, cut it in 1/2 and made a tote bag for 2 of my grandaughters. Thank you for the helpful video!
Great idea. I’ve been wanting to make something unique with vintage linens. Thank you for this tutorial. Watching from AZ USA. Also, I don’t think Shabby Chic ever went out of style and some of it’s similar to cottage core, boho, farmhouse, French Country etc.
My last order of pillows that shipped out of the country cost $75 to mail. I could not make a profit at that rate. To mail in the states was $10-30 depending on how many were purchased. You also must consider the cost of: fabric, poly stuffing, thread, needles, buttons, ribbon and TIME.
David’s wife Linda is using his iPad again. About 20 years ago I made what I call a coverlet rather then a quilt using a white sheet as a backing and old floral handkerchiefs from 20’s,30’s ,40’s and 50’s ( when women carried them in there purses to use if necessary) it took me many years to gather enough of them because some I saw were threadbare, so soiled that stains would not come out, etc. to have a coverlet “ covered” 😂 I placed them , sometimes over a corner of another, using all different sizes and colors. I love it, it’s so unique and I use it seasonally in the springtime. Came across unused handkerchiefs and have them laid out to make pillow shams this year! Your embroidery idea is great - gather enough of them and you could make a coverlet for a bed, especially if you have a single sized bed .
I love this idea so much! Thank you for the video and tutorial! I have some hand-embroidered pillow cases that I made when I was in my teens and twenties, and still have lots of press-on patterns from 'way-back-in-the-day.' I love to do the embroidery, but I can't do any fine crotchet. I want to make the once popular western denim shirt with the embroidered cowboy and western designs on it. That was and still is a favorite of mine. Thank you again! Keep doing your beautiful re-purposing designs. They are great! 😊💖🙏🏻
Just found your channel. What a good idea to use old linens. Do you ever use pre formed pillows from Michaels or Joanns instead of stuffing? Probably have to be more choosy on the size of pattern that goes on the pillows to match up sizes. Easy enough to add a zipper while constructing so it could be removed to wash. Just a thought. I've made dozens of American Girl clothes for my 4 grand daughters. Sadly the are all to old now😢. Waiting for great grand kids❤
Thank you so much for the video. I love old linens and hate to see them discarded. If anyone wants to sell these pretty things, the younger generation calls this kind of decor “cottage core”…. I think. I love the kitty, it deserves to be saved and repurposed. Is there a difference in Molly suds and OxiClean when using vintage linens??
You could sew a straight line right down the middle, if you are referring to the hem stitch on the pillow. If you are talking about crocheted ruffles on pillowcases, you will have to catch them in the side seams of the pillow or they will continue to unravel.
Probably not, only because I haven't purchased any new linens. It is not a miracle worker, but it does work. You can expect 1 shade lighter on the fabric, but it is not going to take out 50 year old tea stains.
@@cottagedesignsbyerin4548 thank you for responding so quickly. Most of them are in pretty good shape. I don’t think she really used them that much because they are from several countries around the world.
Was wondering why you would not make a pillow form using a piece of muslin and stuff it with polyester fill. Place your pillow cover over it . If the pillow cover gets soiled over time it would be easier to remove the pillow and wash the case rather than pull out all the stuffing and have to restuff it.

I made and sold hundreds of repurposing projects during the shabby chic craze. I am glad to see someone is doing it again.
I love the fact that you didn’t cut out your mistake. We all make them. Thank you for sharing.❤
I get my words jumbled sometimes when I'm filming live. I think it is from being nervous.

Awww the memories🥰. I’m 82 and my mother taught me to embroider when I was 5. I love the classic embroidery patterns, in fact you can still buy them❤

Beautiful pillows
Thank you very much.
I find it hard to believe the mailing would cost that much, especially on a 50 dollar pillow, but your work is beautiful,

Beautiful ideas! BTW the curved piecing block name is called "Drunkards Path"
Yes, I said that, but because some people are offended by that title...it is also called propeller.

Cute pillow.
Have bought some that I intend to cut up and use in quilts. These are beautiful, I love the kitten.
Have fun!
wonderful video
I have inherited my mom's antique linens business,,,,I have a lot of sewing ahead. I made several pillows with them but nobody bought them.
It us a shame that no one bought them. Keep trying. Try a different shape or trims.
This is a very cute pillow. 😼
cute pillows. 🙂

Welcome!
What l can see on the cat pillow l would have sewn some of the lace trim from the dresser scraf around the piece you used on the pillow
Thank you! Do you hot glue the buttons on, or sew them? Love you video!
Sometimes, I do both, so that they won't come off during washing. I sew the middle as usual, but hot glue around the edges.

I totally agree with you! I'm not sure if there is a difference in washing powder. They remind me of Borax.
I wonder where i can get the embroidery pattern for the vintage cat? I love the size of the piece!
You might try looking on EBay.
Use coloring books enlarge to what ever you want. Use iron out pencil to Trace.

No, sorry. One half is mine and the other is my Granddaughter's.
@@cottagedesignsbyerin4548 Thanks anyway. It just reminds me sooo much of a pillowcase I had all during my childhood and loved dearly.
Have you ever made a quilt using the pieces of linens
No, I haven't, but it is on my "to-do" list.
Any chance we can see A before and after using the Molly suds? I have some linen details that belong to my mother and I’d like to make a wall hanging.
Probably not, only because I haven't purchased any new linens. It is not a miracle worker, but it does work. You can expect 1 shade lighter on the fabric, but it is not going to take out 50 year old tea stains.

Why don’t you center the kitty
The cat is centered on the pillow. Do you mean the embroidery? I didn't make the embroidered piece.
