    Going from pikmin 4 to pokemon scarlet this week almost killed me. Idk how one of nintendo's smaller IPs outplayed the biggest IP in the world, but it made me appreciate their work on pikmin that much more.

      Here is the issue with Scarlet: It was made by Gamefreak. They have the ambition, but neither the developers and time to fully realise it. Oh, they are also making games for third parties spreading their developers even thinner.
      The only Pokémon games that felt like finished games were Pokémon: Let's Go (made by Gamefreak) and the Diamond/Pearl remakes that were not even made by Gamefreak.

      Pikmin 4 had like 10 years of a development cycle. Pokemon had like 2 years so it was clearly rushed.

    • @Nuvendil
      @Nuvendil ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OzzianmanGamefreak definitely needs to outsource the technical side of thigns to another studio. I would probably go with Monolithsoft and make use of Monolithsoft's engine for their open world games. Or the Tears of the Kingdom engine.
      They can keep a lot of the asset creation, game design, and art direction stuff in house. They just have got to stop trying to develop their own engines cause they are just bad at it.
      They could then split into two teams who alternate on game releases, like Call of Duty does, to give each game at least 3 or 4 years in the oven.
      These feel like the best solutions imo

One detail I like that also ties with your review is that when you move the camera underwater, you hear a sound effect that sounds like submerging a real life camera microphone. I think this game looks phenomenal for a Switch game, but there's one area I think was heavily downgraded from Pikmin 3, and that's the water rendering. Go play the Twilight River level in Pikmin 3 (or just skip to 3:31) then come back to this and you'll see an immediate difference.
    The water rendering in 4 is fine, but 3 has probably the best shallow water rendering in any game.

    I had NO clue Pikmin 4 changed to Unreal Engine. I genuinely thought it was Nintendo's engine just with 10 years of improvements. I think that's a testament to Nintendos modeling and art design prowess. This doesn't look like a typical UE game, it really does look like a Nintendo game. And it's absolutely beautiful. Amazing looking game for the Switch. Just boggles the mind that we have games like Pikmin 4 and TOTK running FLUIDLY on a handheld built with 2017 hardware. I mean we're 6 years into the Switch, and I still never take it for granted just how amazing it is to have such high fidelity console games on a handheld system.

  • @oscarzxn4067
    @oscarzxn4067 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    The game is very beautiful, it kinda solved my only real issue with Pikmin 3's visuals, that being that the overall texture and gemoetry was inconsistent, a lot of it looking outstanding but sometimes barely better than the first 2 games, probably becasue of the game originally starting development for the Wii and maybe keeping assests from that build. Here on Pikmin 4 everything looks with a consistently high level of quality on texture and gemoetry.

  • @MoonSarito

    I really didn't expect such a huge jump in graphics quality from Pikmin 3 (Wii U) to Pikmin 4 (Switch) even more so considering that Switch hardware isn't much more powerful than Switch, but damn, Nintendo really knows how surprise me, the game is not only more beautiful than Pikmin 3, I would even say that it is one of the most beautiful games I have ever seen artistically speaking, it is magnificent to see it running on a handheld.

    Basically made the biggest leap in visual presentation at the cost of potential problematic resolution issues. But it really, really shows how hard Nintendo can stretch the absolutely ancient base hardware that the switch was made with and get something good. UE4 doesn't feel it's just there as a shortcut, it actually feels effectively used to create the most visually stunning Pikmin game to date. (Even technically is the most auditorally stunning as well, literally the most dynamic the series has gotten.) And no matter how you feel about the potential downgrades in certain respects the small sacrifices done for the game to look this good as a whole for a portable device, is literally classic Nintendo.

    • @alfo2804
      @alfo2804 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Probably. With the Switch, they seem to be crumbling under the weight of increased development costs (time, staff and resources, not necessarily money) so moving to an engine that streamlines a lot of the busiwork would allow them to make better looking, more ambitious games at a faster rate. There's really nothing special about the 'Nintendo Engine' that is lost with the move to UE4. This still looks unmistakably like a Nintendo game, only now with anti-alising *THANK GOD.*

    This game is absolutely brilliant. I have terrible ADD and have tried so hard to get into the last 3 games, which I own, but always strayed because it couldn't keep my attention. Boy is this one different! They essentially took the formula of a metroidvania, simplified it into bite sized chunks and then added in the Shrine (botw) and Cave (totk) concept from Zelda to give you constant satisfying breaks from the timer and outside world. Both are equally as engaging and rewarding while not getting stale as you're always progressing and unlocking new things. It's honestly the perfect formula, and I haven't been this deeply engaged in a game since 2017 with BOTW.
    Bravo Nintendo!

    We've also had a "Rewind" type feature since 1&2 were ported to the Wii.
    1:56 - You really don't get that stuff "by default", especially the swimming.
    Oatchi doesn't grow and become ride-able until you've rescued at least 1 Castaway, which would happen on Day 3 at the soonest.
    While he only learns to swim after he's struggled in the water and grown. (2 days after struggling, to be specific.)

    Nintendo making games in a framerate less than 60 fps is always gonna be a step backwards no matter how advanced the rendering pipeline is. Strong art and a solid framerate is what sets Nintendo-games apart from the rest. 30 fps and an overuse of postprocessing effects makes for cheap looking games and is below Nintendo imo.

      @@zultriova89 no i would have opted for baked shadows for the levels and blob shadows for the Pikmin. Realtime shadows for some larger characters only. I think that alone would free up a lot of resources. Realtime shadows looks like shit when rendered at this low resolution anyway.

      @zultriova89 ปีที่แล้ว

      ya know, people expecting much from cheap processor for almost 10 years ago.. original switch mean for 540p handheld and 720p/1080p docked (according to switch prototype from Nintendo dev partner) same as Wii U and they bump it to 720p and 1080p docked.. all the power and gpu heavily toward resolution rather than fps for games even with low textures than suitable for low resolution like 720p maximum.. I hate it too but gamer just asking for more resolution than fps.. even for switch 2 they want nintendo make it 4K portable..

    Since you included comparisons to the work of modders for the Pikmin 1+2 review, it should be noted that modders have also made enhancements to Pikmin 4 by setting UE4’s graphical setting to higher values and have even bumped the performance to a native 60fps, albeit with some slight stutters. TH-camr and notable Pikmin modder Gunnadahun made a video showcasing both graphical and performance improvements through emulation before Nintendo took down the video for obvious reasons.
