@Bobb Grimley I saw him pressing 'ear' when he had some issues with his ears some time ago and in this video he pressed 'smell' after he got home from a groom. So he is observing and learning it seems. I don't know how often that happens but it looks like he is starting to use some of the words in the right context, even though he isn't expected to know these words yet. Watch the end again

Dogs have a much more acute sense of smell, and the grooming products do not smell good to them at all. Some of us humans are sensitive to fragrances, too, and can’t tolerate being around someone wearing perfume or other strong scents.

  • @seaztheday4418

Lots of groomers will spray dogs with pet cologne afterwards, and I think the dogs with their sensitive noses really don’t like it. I think Otter and Bunny were saying ‘they put a weird smell on me’ and probably would like it to be washed off, I bet it’s giving them awful headaches

We’re weeks behind you and struggling with the sibling dynamics. Our puppy picks up the buttons are important and persistently tries to chew them. Older dog is similar personality to Bunny and stressed by all the change, I’ve never known her so sad. We don’t want to take buttons up as she needs opportunity to talk. (Incessant toy squeaking in the background!). Have you come across any good resources on managing dog sibling relationships, or how to find a professional psychologist/behaviourist you click with? I’ve exhausted youtube level advice.

I would love to be a child and grow up with watching 'What About Bunny' and walk the streets believing half of the dogs out there have buttons at home and I can just walk up to them and introduce myself and converse some life matters to them. Haha. I think it is often a fantasy of children to be able to talk human language with animals. How cute 😆 As a child I had a fantasy book about a boy who could talk out loud with all animals and learned about all their different experiences, different senses and secrets about life that humans don't have or know about. Amazing to think that young people now grow up knowing undoubtably about the intricate feelings, awareness and smarts of dogs and therefore quite likely animals in general. This is important work that is being done here. Helps eliminate the non-compassionate treatment of animals still being overlooked and acceptable in the future.

Maybe Bunny was helping or protecting Otter by teaching him that his behavior is not okay by mom. Helping him fit in with the pack more quickly and do well. I wonder if Bunny assumes Otter knows the words or if she is very aware and understanding that Otter doesn't know most of the words. I am wondering if Bunny is trying to teach him the words at the same time as helping him learn the right behaviors and house rules? That would make her a very protective big sister. It is not impossible. Dogs are very protective and social animals who are pack oriented, and Bunny has already accepted Otter as family, it seems from the recent videos.

I'm the little sister who always wanted what my big brothers had and I did whatever they did. It's so annoying to be told "you aren't big enough to do what your big brothers are doing". My little sister and I would always follow the boys around and make them include us. One time at the sheep farm we lived on the four of us had gone quiet... Mum knew something was up and came out to find us sitting around a big puddle with the boys trying to convince both my sister and I to eat worms. I think we did eat them in the end just to prove we were as grown up as they were. Mum just shook her head at us when the boys told her later as we were getting ready for bed.

"Smell" when fresh from the groomers
...there is the scent of shampoo, and also the doggy cologne spray that many groomers finish with unless you specify not to. Also, the clippers are not washed between animals, and may leave behind the scent of other dogs as well as the oil used on the blades. So "smell" makes really good sense in the context given.

yeah sometimes she looks like a "blind typer" even, pressing buttons at high speed with different paws without hardly looking. She is also very creative with word associations and combinations, pressing 'poop play' when she farted, 'ouch stranger paw' when she had a thorn or splinter, and 'loud bird' when an airplane flew over. All this shows a clear understanding of the meanings to me. I enjoyed her recently pressing 'I big happy now'. It is nice to know a dog is in a happy place in life. She moved home and got a baby brother / friend dog in that new home. Very exciting times for a dog or for anyone going through big changes like that... I think animals excel at spacial memory, like way better than humans. And it makes sense, because in the wild they have to be able to remember their way around and where to find things again. Like squirrels remembering where they cached their nuts, for instance. When I was a kid my older sister had a horse that was ridden for pleasure, and when he came across something like a groundhog hole in a field or a sinkhole in the woods, he'd remember and avoid that spot forever. Kanzi, the bonobo who communicated with an electronic touchscreen, was extremely proficient at recalling the location of words and he'd fly through his messages. And chimps that have been taught to put numbers on a screen in order, or to pair up matching hidden pictures (like the game Memory or Concentration), can do it super fast, like way faster than humans.
It's funny, humans easily accept that animals can generally smell, hear, and sometimes see (which are all connected to the brain) better than us, but we rarely think to consider that their brains may work better than ours in certain other ways too.

Your Bunny is amazing! How old is she now? I have four Scottish Terriers and they are very smart and clever. When I was a girl we had a Schnauzer that was incredible. She understood language and coul spell words. It's an incredible feeling to have a dog like that in ones life.

It's funny that when they're puppies we celebrate them pooping so much and get so excited and that sticks with them lol. Yhey seem to think it's pretty cool.

I wonder what would happen if you switched a button that is used most frequently with one next to it. Will we get an “oops” or something? I’m curious, it might shed some light on how they are making associations with the buttons?
