The Heisman went to the best player in college football that year who was instrumental in helping his team win the national title. If you wanted to give out the Heisman for throwing 2 INTs and losing to Florida again, Peyton would have won
Several ESPN personalities at the time have openly stated that they began pushing the Charles Woodson narrative to the level they did was for ratings. Many have said that they needed the competition because public opinion was leaning too heavily toward Peyton and the Heisman segment ratings were low. I got to see two Jeanty games this year. I am an Oregon fan and he torched us for over 220 yards against the number one team Nationally. I also drove up to watch him vs #22 UNLV.He torched them in Boise for 175 plus yards. He is the best i have seen since Barry Sanders. And that says a lot. And his numbers show it. If he can pull off a 125 vs whoever he plays he breaks the record from Sanders. Having said all that. He was a close second to Travis Hunter and like you if someone voted for Jeanty I have nothing negative to say. He did play at the top levels vs the top teams he played as the above shows. This year that team beat a ranked team 3 of 4 times including UNLV twice while ranked and beat Washington State when they were ranked #24. But if you are top five in total catches and touchdowns nationally as a WR then dominate on the defensive back position. His stats were not better on the defensive side because QBS game planned to not throw his way if at all possible. that is half the field on the side he is on. He wa top three on the defensive side of the ball too. only way Jeanty wins is if he played linebacker and lead his team in tackles for losses and top ten nationally in total tackles. That is the equivalence to Hunter. He was playing on average 90 plays a game. Do you know that he could of returned kicks too and was the best at it colorado. but coach prime wanted him to catch a breather and drink fluids so he could continue playing both ways. I played outside linebacker and fullback in high school. by the end of the first quarter i was parched man if i didnt at least rotate on offense to bring in the play/plays depending on what defense was showing. I needed the time off on kick offs and punt returns plus kick offs and punt coverage too for the first two games of the season. I aske coach to take me out during special teams not because i didnt want to play every down. I did it because needed to catch my breath and drink fluids or i would cramp up before the third quarter ended. We took the returns off andi made it to the mid fourth quarter and finally took kick offs out and i played all game with no cramps if i made sure to drink fluid during every one of the special teams. ONCE again he is doing it in a power 4 league. that is the top place to play football outside the NFL is played in those leagues. that is why Travis Hunter wins in my book.
Colorado = Clicks. Yeah hunter is great but Jeanty is generational. 3 years from now hunter will be an assistant coach and Jeanty will be the feature back on an NFL team
@willismcgee5216 “But is the Heisman a defensive award? If not Hunters defensive stats don't apply...” But is the Heisman an offensive award? If not Jeantys offensive stats don't apply... The heisman is a college football award. All stats apply. This is among the most nonsensical comments I’ve ever read.
@danielbrown7740 Jeanty is a generational player. It’s been 30 years since someone’s done what he’s doing. What Hunter is doing has never been done. Never.
@johnlee7085 you mean like sione vaki did for utah last year? Or Charles Woodson? Like yes hunter is special, I am not saying he isn't but he didn't need to carry his team, colorado loses what 1 more game without him on the field. Boise state is in the playoffs because of Jeanty. That's the meaning of the Heisman, a player so integral to TEAM success that they directly effect wins and losses. Hunter is good but he had a lot of help and a lot less success
Put Jeanty's season on the Colorado team and Hunter on Boise St. and Hunter doesn't even make the finals. That's how I know Jeanty was far and away the more deserving. The media circus that is Colorado with deion and shaduer sanders is what powered Hunter to victory.
Bingo. I really thought Boise being in the playoffs and Colorado not making it to the conference title game was the final nail in the coffin and Jeanty was surely going to win after that. The people at ESPN and the Heisman voters (who are pretty dumb) really enjoy the glazing Deion angle more than anything else though. It all comes down to money and ratings unfortunately.
You do realize jeanty plays in the g5 right , he wouldn’t have no where near his production in the big 12 , and before you say the big 12 sucks , Texas one of the best teams in the country rarely won it when they where there so your argument is stupid
@@djbetts3079 2024 B12 isn't like previous seasons, you can't compare pre-portal and NIL seasons. Texas dominated the B12 in 2023 when the portal and NIL started to take off. College football is seeing a massive change where it's the SEC, half of the B10, a couple ACC teams, then everyone else. The 2024 B12 is much closer to the MW than the B12 is the SEC.
We live in a world that people can't have differing opinions anymore. No one debates, everyone just yells. Thanks for trying to keep the bar higher than what it is.
I think Tennessee and ohio state will come down to which QB can avoid pressure and get the ball to his weapons. My prediction is that Nico is the guy that does it. Give me Tennessee 31 OSU 17
I have gotten into several arguments about Hunter winning Heisman. I have no problem if you think jeanty should have won but saying Hunter did not deserve it is just objectively incorrect. The go to argument for people against Hunter winning is “snaps aren’t a stat” and then when you actually start debating them you realize 99% of that crowd have no idea what Hunters stats actually are. They will tell you he doesn’t have any top 3 stats and then when you tell them he’s 2nd in the country for TD receptions they pivot and say he’s only above average at the positions he plays in. That just simply isn’t true as he is a first team all American at both of the positions he plays (the first player in history to do so). There has been a MASSIVE misinformation campaign against Travis Hunter on social media and it was so effective that literally nobody who argues against him has any idea what he actually did. 10-20 years from now Travis Hunters season will be remembered among the greatest single seasons in the history of college football.
Or people just realize that he doesn’t deserve it there’s no massive media fix… we’re all sitting here going. The dude literally doesn’t deserve it. He played like crap against the best teams on their schedule, and he also patted his stats against the worst teams. We all watched it…. That’s why no one believes that Hunter is the real Heisman.
All very true. I dug deep into the stats and historic precedents over the weekend for both players. 95% of the people I debated with/talked to didn't even know *any* of Hunter's statistical placements or PFF grades, but quickly recited some of Jeanty's. It's strange that people fight for one thing a certain way but completely disregard that methodology when arguing against someone else. It has been just "he was average at 2 positions" or "snap counts aren't a stat" on rinse and repeat. Complete willful ignorance and lack of critical thinking. Basically thought-terminating cliches. The reality is that what Hunter did was so rare that the casual fan doesn't even realize how hard it is to do what he did - basically Dunning-Krueger in effect - they don't have an easy cookie-cutter comparison to put him into perspective so the easy option is to dismiss. People quickly compared Jeanty to Derrick Henry and Barry Sanders' Heisman seasons because they played the same position and everything fits nicely into specific categories. ESPN even did that which was silly. On that topic, he falls short of both: Henry did what he did against the #1 strength of schedule in the country (different outlets have Boise between #70-80), and Sanders cleared Jeanty's stats by ~600 yards, 40 more ypg, and 10 more TDs through 11 games. Jeanty might 'break' the record, but it will take him 3 more games than Sanders got to play. Jeanty's had an amazing season but people need to chill on the "he's the best RB in 20+ years".
Kinda hard to argue it's the single greatest "seasons" in CFB history when he couldn't lead his team to the playoffs. I have no problem with him winning the Heisman, he's a uniquely amazing athlete and he deserves it. But I also think Jeanty was far more impactful for his team and the season they've achieved. Just an Oregon fans PoV, go Ducks!
@CeanStrauss Well, that should mean Dillon Gabriel deserves it because Gabriel had ‘money’ moments in every game that mattered, against more Top 25 teams, including two top five teams. Playing both sides of the ball and earning All American on both sides is so improbable that to consider anyone else is crazy.
so because the CFP expanded, for the first time ever, college football will be going up against NFL ratings. the NFL is pushing all their games on prime video or netflix when it’s on a thursday, friday, or saturday. but for these next two/three weeks, the games on saturday will be on NBC and CBS. while the CFP will be on ABC. if NFL saturday games didn’t exist during this time of year, we would be having a CBS broadcast of a CFP game. FOX is showing CBB along with USC vs UConn women’s hoops. it’ll be interesting how it does in ratings, I know there’s bias here because it’s a CFB channel, I won’t be watching the NFL but will check in on my CBB team
Josh, you and I could have a fun debate over Hunter vs Jeanty. I think I have some good arguments. I have zero disagreement with your take on the greater discourse. Thank you for at least attempting to bring a little civility to this conversation.
I loved the clickbait comment. Very true. Your platform allows you to cover what you want. I always enjoy the talk about less predominant teams. Secondly thank you for always advising responsible gambling. I'm not big on the betting market and don't really care for that content but I appreciate you always giving the caviat of if your gonna bet do it smartly.
I absolutely think both deserved it and either one winning would have been totally fine. I was leaning toward Hunter because of everything he has accomplished on the field, but the thing that put it over the edge for me was his grades. Heisman nominees are not just good football players. They must also be good people. With everything he has done on the field plus the 4.0. That is a HUGE accomplishment and bodes well for his future.
Tennessee fan here, if we beat Ohio state it will 100% have to be our best game we play all year. I don’t think we can lean on the same ole performances we have had so far to beat them. We need Nico to throw for 250+ and likely multiple TD’s to go along with Dylan Sampson probably needs 150 yards and at least one TD. If Ohio State QB is locked in, our secondary can be exposed. All that to say, never been more excited to watch a football game in my life
JP saying what we've known all season without saying it. Clemson needs an actual DC not a stats guy promoted to his first ever coordinator position. Clemson D doesn't have the fire or discipline to shut down Texas.😎
Right, because coaches are holding back players to purposefully limit their performance. Certainly don’t want them achieving more, because that might result in more victories. So illogical it doesn’t even rise to the level of casual.
@joshpateCFB Do you think that hunger plays a role in TN vs OSU? I think the hunger of the Vols in this spot is significantly higher than OSU, who has more hunger towards beating Michigan than winning a playoff game.
We’ve all been saying the only way a defensive player would win the Heisman in modern day for YEARS like when Jabril peppers didn’t get it was if they played top notch at a power school on both sides every game. It happened and y’all lose y’all’s minds. Maybe just maybe if Jeanty did that at let’s say Florida or Oklahoma and those schools made the playoffs because of it that might’ve done it. I get it , hes amazing and arguably a toss up , he did it against Oregon and whoever was on the schedule . But it’s hard for running backs to win now . Especially when you have a running back that’s always a precision passer like Jayden Daniels or a freak show going both ways like Hunter . I don’t know if Hunter should’ve gotten the bilenknoff maybe that’s because Tre Harris got hurt maybe it just wasn’t a lights out WR year like previous years . Idk it’s been a super wierd seaosn all together and the playoffs are going to be even weirder you can bet your ass on that
No truer words for Tennessee ond the Buckeyes. ... Juk the rest. These two are my favorites year to year, and the Bucks will do it.., no question, but let it snow and blow in the shoe for Josh Pate and the Buckeye Fans, and for the "watching world to see"... and A Big Roo- to you Aussies. Come on up to the game Saturday. Tennessee is bad to the bone, as are My Bucks. I predict REAL FOOTBALL.
The fact that our backup QB can just hop in the portal while we're still in the hunt for a National Championship is everything wrong with this new age college football and I wish we could just staple that portal shut until February at the earliest 😩
Power rating based spread for ND might be a bit high with their best win being against GAtech… but without Haynes King. Regardless, confidence interval is even wider. For this reason, Indiana moneyline is good value.
Not a buffalo bill, Catherine, precious, put the lotion on the skin or else it gets the hose again reference Josh.... I spit cinnamon toast crunch everywhere damn it 😂😂
I may be in the minority, but I don't think any team without a conference should ever be able to host a playoff game. Especially after I was bombarded with how important the conference championships are. It bewilders me...
The problem I have with the Heisman trophy this year is that I feel like if Jeanty played for a P4 team he would clearly win. Just feels like he never had a shot because he plays for Boise
You're forgetting Clemson pulled their starters half their games at Halftime. Not to mention defense being BETTER switching to 4-3 vs 4-2-5 during VA Tech.
A lot more teams doing that this year. I feel like star players and valued starters are going to be pulled early more often because of the playoffs. Preserving your players is more important than ever. I hope Clemson beats tf outta texas
No mention on the rush teams Indianas played? The best rushing offense they've faced was osu (who ranked 59th) Indianas played 7 rushing offenses outside the top 100, not saying they don't have run defense, plus I'd put a grain of salt on it, plus they've never seen a duel threat half as good as Leonard this season
I was kinda hoping Dillon Gabriel would win but that's just me being a sooner Homer...pretty great what all 3 of them did i dont have a vote sooo Travis wins sounds great
ESPN owns the contract for the playoff games. NBC owns the contract for Notre dame regular season games The 2020 game vs Alabama was on ESPN, also their bowl games are not on NBC
The lebron vs jordan bout has been solved. There is a definitive video with all the stats and everything you could want to prove who is better. And guess what? Lol... it's not even close. If I find the video again I'll comment the title. Travis is a beast, at least in football, and so is Ashtonworth von JentlemanSmithington.
Taking Tennessee over Ohio State here because I don't believe this team has the skill set that chip Kelly prefers. He likes speed and open field elusiveness, outside of Smith there's not much speed on that Buckeye offense
Not a fan of Clemson, but Sark and Texas will shit the bed here. There's a reason why he's called 7-win Sark. He underpeforms in big moments. Texas may win, but they ain't covering that number. Dabo will throw caution to the win and go all out. They have nothing to lose here, they're expected to lose.
Can we talk about how much of a joke Army winning the Joe Moore award was? They gave the award out before Army played all of their games and once they got the award, proceeded to get manhandled by Navy up front. They don’t even have to pass protect as well. That award lost a lot of its meaning to me by giving it to Army
Wasn't Texas one of the other finalist, who then proceed to give up 6 sacks against UGA in the SEC championship. Plus, UGA had another 7 sacks against Texas in the first matchup.
@ The other finalist that should have won is Oregon. They let up 1 sack combined against Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State. Like how does Army win over that, insane
I'm the contrary guy who would give the Heisman to Cam Ward because Boise and Colorado would still be pretty good without those studs, but Miami would be trash without him.
No mention of Navy sending Army into the depths? I thought Saturdays were what make this sport great? No mention of America's game this Saturday? Sad times on JPCFS
It isnt like it hasn't been done before. There were several thousand players that did it before two platoon football. Might not have been as many snaps because of style of play but most of those guys didnt even facemasks and there were no targeting penalties.
Just look at how many plays Hunter averaged per game, then find something that would compare to playing 130+ snaps per game of top level college football, then you’ll understand Jennty was an amazing running back, just ran into a better player
@johnlee7085 then certainly these two players combined are unstoppable in every game being that it's a qb and wr also I'm aware he's an incredible athlete i just believe he wasn't deserving of the heisman he's the most unique player in college football not the best
2:38 Sorry Josh, I don’t buy it that Travis deserves it. It has and always will be a popularity contest. If you have to count snaps played as a key stat, he does not deserve it. He’s not a top 5 receiver or corner.
One of the only times I can think of hard disagreeing w Pate. Yes Travis hunter is great and obviously a top 2 candidate for the award. I’ve mostly seen the argument for jeanty always being how overwhelmingly good of a season he’s had. Very seldomly have I seen any worthwhile nontroll argument blatantly claiming hunter was trash. Hunter can still be 99% of the player jeanty is and I can still say jeanty clearly deserved the award.

That's the meaning of the Heisman, a player so integral to TEAM success that they directly effect wins and losses. Hunter is good but he had a lot of help and a lot less success
Josh: Everyone’s allowed to have their opinion
Also Josh: if you disagree with me you’re a casual
you obviously didn't listen. He said if you disagree with him by tearing hunter or himself down then you a casual
Colorado wins the big 12 with Jeanty
@@willismcgee5216 not if Travis hunter on the team , and with cu oline jeanty would be lucky to get 500 yards on Colorado, let alone 2,500
They are watching you from Šestajovice, Czechia 🇨🇿
I think Tennessee and ohio state will come down to which QB can avoid pressure and get the ball to his weapons. My prediction is that Nico is the guy that does it. Give me Tennessee 31 OSU 17
35-17 Ohio State
@ “buckeyetillidie replied” has a nice ring to it
People clearly didn't watch UT get shut out in the first half for like 4 straight games
Go Buckeyes!
Hunter and jeanty are both generational talents and both were fun to watch this year
Absolutely correct 💯 sometimes you don’t appreciate what’s in front of you🙏🏽
I have gotten into several arguments about Hunter winning Heisman.
@ you can keep telling yourself that but it’s wrong
@CeanStrauss
Well, that should mean Dillon Gabriel deserves it because Gabriel had ‘money’ moments in every game that mattered, against more Top 25 teams, including two top five teams.
Playing both sides of the ball and earning All American on both sides is so improbable that to consider anyone else is crazy.
I really hate this culture of "it's not even close"..."this guy is trash"....these unnecessarily binary statements.
so because the CFP expanded, for the first time ever, college football will be going up against NFL ratings. the NFL is pushing all their games on prime video or netflix when it’s on a thursday, friday, or saturday. but for these next two/three weeks, the games on saturday will be on NBC and CBS. while the CFP will be on ABC. if NFL saturday games didn’t exist during this time of year, we would be having a CBS broadcast of a CFP game. FOX is showing CBB along with USC vs UConn women’s hoops. it’ll be interesting how it does in ratings, I know there’s bias here because it’s a CFB channel, I won’t be watching the NFL but will check in on my CBB team
I appreciate the segment on responsible gaming. You’re a good man Josh. 🤙
Man thank you for what you do josh you’re the real goat !!
Clemson and Gator helmets fighting for the last spot 👀👀 you know who to pick 🐊🐊
Thank you Josh ! This is going to be a great game. GO VOLS 🧡
Yes that is true on ABC/ESPN at ND stadium. Believe the NBC contact was signed in 91
Yes, 1991 was the first year of the NBC deal.
As a Boise Idaho resident, I have zero bias, I promise you, Jeanty shoulda won.
If Texas loses to Clemson, throw that Pate Model in the trash
Every other player in CFB doesn’t get the opportunity to play both ways. Casual take by Josh Pate. Talk about it.
Right, because coaches are holding back players to purposefully limit their performance. Certainly don’t want them achieving more, because that might result in more victories.
So illogical it doesn’t even rise to the level of casual.
@joshpateCFB
Do you think that hunger plays a role in TN vs OSU?
Idk it’s been a super wierd seaosn all together and the playoffs are going to be even weirder you can bet your ass on that
22:16 I think Will Howard was playing somewhat injured against Michigan. That’s why he didn’t do as well. Giving him an exempt grade on that game.
IF they beat Tennessee they get to travel out west and play a rested Oregon. Ducks by 2 TD'S.
All I know is that I’m praying the Titans find a way to bring Hunter to Nashville 🤞🏻
Sorry Ohio State Fans the curse of Josh Pate is real - you really needed him to pick Tennessee not you 😢
The fact that our backup QB can just hop in the portal while we're still in the hunt for a National Championship is everything wrong with this new age college football and I wish we could just staple that portal shut until February at the earliest 😩
Is there a discount code for football tickets? Thought I heard about one
PATE!! Preach! Chuuuch!
I still think Jeanty should've won, but I was fine with either him or Hunter. I see no problem here.
Hopefully Sark realizes his loyalty should be to the team and not just Quinn. PUT ARCH IN WHEN QUINN GETS COLD!!!!
Hope you guys received the trays I sent 🙏🏻
Would love to see them on set 👀
No mention on the rush teams Indianas played? The best rushing offense they've faced was osu (who ranked 59th)
Indianas played 7 rushing offenses outside the top 100, not saying they don't have run defense, plus I'd put a grain of salt on it, plus they've never seen a duel threat half as good as Leonard this season
Does the fact that ND and IU are both in Indiana make a difference? ND has owned the state mostly forever.
Well said by Justin.
Thinking you for speaking up on the gambling. It’s a problem.
I was kinda hoping Dillon Gabriel would win but that's just me being a sooner Homer...pretty great what all 3 of them did i dont have a vote sooo
Travis wins sounds great
You’ve been talking about this at auburn since February? March?
Miller Moss to Coach Brohm is great.
When Josh says a team is dog water you know they have problems
Why would ESPN broadcast a game at Notre Dame when they’ve had their own non-ESPN contact for decades. Being surprised by that is quite odd…
ESPN owns the contract for the playoff games. NBC owns the contract for Notre dame regular season games
The 2020 game vs Alabama was on ESPN, also their bowl games are not on NBC
@@samuel03 I’m well aware of all of that lol… the discussion is games AT notre dame
30:58 No immunity???
I almost spit out my food😂
Bold prediction FSU is natty champs in 24-25 cfp race lock it in now before the playoff start
Texas isn’t much of a big game program at all but they can prove me wrong with a playoff run
Travis Hunter won because he’s the Face of a reality tv show that these writers who don’t even watch Colorado play breath like air
I just realized no mention of the army navy game
Oh well still my fav show
Taking Tennessee over Ohio State here because I don't believe this team has the skill set that chip Kelly prefers. He likes speed and open field elusiveness, outside of Smith there's not much speed on that Buckeye offense
ND and IU are 8-4 and 6-6 respectively if they play in the SEC
No way bet all of your gift and grocery money on the playoffs. Fanduel is awesome. So glad that you are a sponsor of fanduel.
Picked all of the favorites lol
Not a fan of Clemson, but Sark and Texas will shit the bed here. There's a reason why he's called 7-win Sark. He underpeforms in big moments. Texas may win, but they ain't covering that number. Dabo will throw caution to the win and go all out. They have nothing to lose here, they're expected to lose.
I get so hype when Josh Pate picks Clemson to loose because Clemson always does the opposite of what he picks. 😂
Going to Columbus and no mention of Qwik Trip, any chance of a gas station portal entry?🤷♂️
49:15 Parks and Rec mention ?? Oh hell yeah Ron Swanson is the man !!
It isnt like it hasn't been done before. There were several thousand players that did it before two platoon football. Might not have been as many snaps because of style of play but most of those guys didnt even facemasks and there were no targeting penalties.
Osu is gonna struggle with that Tennessee line. We saw the results of McGlaughin going down
Woodson for Michigan dead very similar to that that is when he plays an office but still had quite a few
Just look at how many plays Hunter averaged per game, then find something that would compare to playing 130+ snaps per game of top level college football, then you’ll understand
Jennty was an amazing running back, just ran into a better player
Champ Bailey did all this and was robbed of the Heisman. Thanks for reminding me.
If a team has 2 heisman top 10 vote getters I'm sure they made the playoff with that dominant of players
Casual comment when 11 players per side.
This is legit the first season I have seen where 2 people deserved the heisman.
Players shouldn't be able to enter the portal until the season is over.
One of tĥe biggest snubs was D. Watson in 2016.
My predictions for the playoff in 2024, more chaos.
Proof in the comments: The Heisman is subjective and is a choice from awesome players. It won’t ever make everyone happy.
So jeanty passes taking regular classes while Travis hunter and other people with an actual schedule takes advanced classes
Participation trophy for you loser
You timeshared yourself about that ticket buying logic Josh just so you know. "You are buying you and your family so many memories"
Travis is a great player but lots of 5 star guys have the ability to play both ways in a league like the big 12.
