Elvis's version was definitely great...but Eddie Rabbits version is the one that totally blows me away. I had totally forgotten Eddie as the years have eroded my memories but someone mentioned his name and all of a sudden I remembered...remembered all the great tunes he wrote...I became sad...knowing he left way too soon and wondered what if.....he was such a great talent and a heck of a nice guy. Love this song...when I listen to it I feel like I'm there living it.
@alisabooboobest4087 I wish I could remember exactly, but I'd guess around 1980. Seems I've tried to search that on the internet before. If I find it I'll reply. I can tell you another little snippet about that concert. My brother-in-law worked for the state and just so happened to see the check (yes, apparently a printed check) made out to Eddie Rabbitt for $25,000. I do specifically remember him singing the song, I love a rainy night, and a quick search said that song was released in November 1980. So perhaps he came to the state fair in 1981? I'll keep digging. My dad and I also saw, Charlie Pride, Kenny Rogers (in the 70's) The Gattlin Brothers, Johnny Rodriguez, and Lee Greenwood, all at the state fair. 😄
Elvis , bought the rights from Eddie to sing it first , but went to see Eddie sing it live , as Eddie walked off stage , Elvis said , AWESOME song man , that is all anybody needs to hear , ever .
What an incredible singer and songwriter Eddie was. He was so handsome and sexy, too! This song is one of my faves by Elvis. Hard to believe both are gone.
Thank you so much for uploading this particular live performance! It was on TH-cam years ago, but then it was taken down. I scoured the internet at the time and could not find it. Love that steel guitar!! The best live version of this song by Eddie Rabbit! Much appreciated 🙌🏼
1970: Eddie wrote this with Dick Heard. One way to get your foot in the door is to have Elvis Presley cut your song and have a hit with it. Took Eddie a few years to finally get his first big hit, but once he did... Be at peace.
I heard the story of how he wrote it and ended up letting Elvis have it, delaying his recording career in the process. Truly a great song. Imagine a world where Eddie Rabbitt released this song and Elvis didn't. ...
Beautiful song sung this way as way. This is country style. ELVIS had it more harder played n sung which im sure Eddie loved or hed not have gave to Elvis to record.
Nope! When a song is written by different writers, each has a right to state it was written by him/ her. People get awards with just their name credited on a song, leaving others out. Look it up!
March 1 2019 coming real soon...and we are going to say Rabbitt Rabbitt Rabbitt at midnight in honour of Eddie...And good luck for the month! It is an Irish thing my wife says !!!
You can tell Eddie wrote this song by the raw emotion. It is like he lived this. We are use to Elvis' version which there is nothing wrong with it. Just different.
Me too until now. There are several songs like “suspicious minds” that I thought were his. I feel like there’s definitely a lack of giving credit where it’s due.
One of the greatest songs ever written. What a talented man Eddie was RIP.
Missing Great Artist " Eddie Rabbitt " Wrote Many Songs !Never Forgotten
He was an amazing songwriter. He left us too soon.
Love anything he sings. He was a special soul.
I saw Eddie in concert a few times and he said Elvis blew him away with his recorded version of the song.
The most beautiful song ever written . Thank you Eddie
Gone too soon his songs will live on; thanks Eddie for the beautiful 🎶

Yes!!!
Rabbitt couldn't sing it himself until after Elvis's 1977 death.
I attended his concert at Austen, NV circa 1992. Great show.
I got to see him at the Utah State Fair, many decades ago. What a great performer he was, and his music lives on!
Lucky sob !!!!
Steven what year did you see Eddie Rabbitt at the Utah State Fair?

Fabulous. He wrote the song and you can feel it in his voice. Thanks for sharing !
Oh, the memories that roam in my mind when I listen to this music Eddie Rabbit is my hero and will forever be a legend in my heart and mind.
a quiet genius and his beautiful song, rest easy, my man, and thank you
I love both Eddie and Elvis singing this song
Elvis , bought the rights from Eddie to sing it first , but went to see Eddie sing it live , as Eddie walked off stage , Elvis said , AWESOME song man , that is all anybody needs to hear , ever .
Who'd think one of the GOATs of country music would be from New Jersey
This is amazing! It's the first time I've seen him sing the entire song live, thanks so much for posting it.
What an incredible singer and songwriter Eddie was. He was so handsome and sexy, too! This song is one of my faves by Elvis. Hard to believe both are gone.
Fantastic to re-discover this. RIP Eddie
Wonderfull song and performance.

I once saw him on RFD TV do this song solo. Him and his guitar..was great!

Wow!!!! His song...
I saw Eddie in West va ❤
Credit where due. Eddie wrote this with Richard Heard. Co-written song.

He never smoked a day in his life. He died from lung cancer from singing in smokey lounges.
Sorry but he was a heavy smoker
Love this
What a fantastic man and
Legendary.. RIP
miss that man......... yvon

Eddie did a great job with writing this song, but I like Elvis's rendition, much more passion. Eddie did a nice job also.
I miss him 😭
He wrote it!
One of z best
This and Blue Suede Shoes were Elvis best covers ever...
Follow that ❤
elvis version best..but this is good
You can tell Eddie wrote this song by the raw emotion. It is like he lived this. We are use to Elvis' version which there is nothing wrong with it. Just different.
Both versions are great but I lean towards the original a bit...
Love Eddie's Version better than Elvis even though Eddie Wrote it, If i understand it was Eddies First #1 hit
Eddie wrote it and I like his version a lot but Elvis' version is still the best
It's not a contest.
I thought that was elvis's song
Eddie wrote it
It was first recorded by Elvis
Me too until now. There are several songs like “suspicious minds” that I thought were his. I feel like there’s definitely a lack of giving credit where it’s due.
@@naj2698 that’s just the way it was, back then. Look at Kistopherson… He really didn’t get credit for his songs until years after the fact.
Studio version is much better
