End of the Line No.1 - Amersham

  • Welcome to Amersham station! In Zone 9 at the end of the Metropolitan line, we kick off here in this new series, ticking off all the stations at the ends of the lines on Tube Map. What's there? What's the station like? What quirky and interesting facts are there, and if you've not been yourself - will this inspire you to go to make a trip yourself!
Also: Fares zones existed since the 1980's, it's just that they didn't first appear on the Tube Map until 2001.
There's some great photos showing the inside of Amersham signal cabin here: www.metroland.org.uk/signal/in...
Download the Bingo Sheet here to play along : geofftech.co.uk/downloads.html

As someone who lives across the road from the Amersham Station and can see the signal cabin from my upstairs window, I agree, it does look a little out of place. Thanks for the extra info on Amersham's relative westerly location, good trivia knowledge to have up my sleeve. What Geoff didn't say is the station is at the bottom of the shopping street and all the amenities that it offers. Old Amersham is a 30-minute walk away through Rectory Woods (left out of the station, under the bridge and then right across the road to take a footpath to the woods that has a floor plaque stating 'METROPOLITAN & GREAT CENTRAL JOINT COMMITTEE PRIVATE PROPERTY' (see if you can spot it). Come To the end of the line at Amersham, you will not be disappointed.

Travelled to Amersham a lot last year to campaign in the by-election. Absolutely fell in love with the area, and I used the Tube (or the Chiltern, whichever was first) to get to my hotel in Rickmansworth.

Amersham is where my grandparents live. I spent many nights getting used to the trains rattle past but it has the nicest cafe stand i have met.

What a great idea for a series. I grew up in Chesham but have used Amersham station many times as well. I didn’t know about the boundary.

Loving this series! We made it a hobby over the past two pandemic-years to explore the various extremities of the Tube map and found some marvellous hikes and localities - be it High Barnet, Uxbridge or Upminster!

Brilliant, I live in Australia these days but my family and I used to visit Amersham on a day out, good memories. Excellent photography too!👍

I loved the tube so much as a kid that my mum brought me to London for my birthday in the early 90s and we rode around on the Underground all day. We got to Amersham and it doesn’t look like it’s changed much in 30 years. Happy memories.
