📍12:04 Opps! “Once In A Lifetime” came out in 1980, not 81! 😅 I guess in that case, “Once In A Lifetime” might edge out “Ashes to Ashes” as my 1980 pick, and then for 1981 I would instead choose “Under Pressure” by Queen and Bowie. 😊 or maybe “Golden Brown” by The Stranglers. Thanks to those who brought this to my attention. Also, I regret not putting “How Soon Is Now?” by The Smiths as my 1984 pick! 😢 Not sure how I forgot about that one!
The simpsons episode where Homer goes to Lolla because none of the kids remember Mississippi Queen, that episode came out closer to the release of Mississippi Queen than the present.
I am outraged that you didn’t include the specific songs I like in your list!! 😡 Unacceptable! The songs I like is known worldwide as the definitive list that should be everyone’s favorites!
You are wrong!! Even though I don't know you nor have any idea which songs would be in your actual list, I am very much inclined to believe your musical taste is rubbish and your picks would have been way worse than mine!! But again, I know absolutely nothing about you or your picks.
It's so funny how people are offended that their personal favorites are not included in this extremely subjective list. 😂😂 They should just make and share their own list instead of being outraged.
@@fugithegreat Well.. people are literally beating each other up over what sports team they are rooting for. I wouldn't expect anything less from the musically inclined netizens.
Ha! I just posted basically the same thing before I saw your post. "Nothing by Kate Bush or The Cure or Depeche Mode? Meh. For instance, "This Woman's Work", "Lullaby", and "Fly On The Windscreen". No wonder the 1980s are his least favorite of all these decades."

I, V, vi, IV ≠ I, III, IV, iv. Say what you want about a song being overplayed and all that but it pays to take a slice of humble pie and get off your high horse.

I agree. I would put 1982 at the top of my list for great music. But almost NONE of the songs that charted that year would be on a list of my favorites. I think it just shows differences between the generations; if you weren't there to get exposed to the whole range of music, you don't have the full picture.
Seriously. 1982-1984 is an embarrassment of riches. Just for 1982 how about Eye in the Sky, Heat of the Moment, Pressure, Southern Cross, Hungry Like the Wolf, Maneater, Somebody's Baby, Steppin' Out, Our House, Who Can It Be Now, Safety Dance, 1999, More Than This, Edge of Seventeen, Do I Do, Africa...
OK, who else went to check out 1982 releases? Our House (Madness). Rio (Duran Duran). Don’t You Want Me? (Human League). Where Everybody Knows Your Name (Cheers theme). Beat Surrender (The Jam). And my personal favourite, Happy Talk by Captain Sensible, which spent the same 2 weeks at number 1, as our family spent camping in the Lake District! Ah, memories.

@@RC-qf3mp ok boomer, you might want to clue in to reality yourself and look at some actual stats of how many estimated people actually transition genders. It's a tiny sliver compared to the rest of the population. You're looking for ragebait and arguments on something you don't agree with and no amount of complaining is going to change that the healthy thing to do is accept and understand gender diversity... because really, no gender police are coming after someone with an insufferable attitude like yours lol
Absolutely brilliant again David - loved it. It’s your love of music, songwriting etc - coupled with your musical expertise - that makes this so compelling
Im amazed that someone with such diverse tastes that tend to scew towards the pioneering and experimental music RARELY talks about King Crimson. One of the most influential (not generally popular, tho) bands of all time. Dare I say the most influential rock band? Yes. Why dont you talk about them? Im just so tired of every music youtuber either being completely ignorant to King Crimson's existence or just not giving them credit where credit is due. I feel like so many of these alternative fans would love King Crimson, theyre like the origin point. Frankly the lack of prog rock on here is baffling. The guy who talks about tons of modes, time signatures, fun rhythms... why?

David, thank you for this. I watched the first half to confirm my biases, then stopped. But then I realized that aside from Radiohead, I know very little after 2001. I’ve built a “listen to” list from the albums you cited after that year (I’m 59).
My favourites from the '70s: 1970 ~ Edwin Starr ~ War 1971 ~ Bill Withers ~ Aint No Sunshine 1972 ~ Roberta Flack ~ Killing Me Softly With His Song 1973 ~ The Rolling Stones ~ Heartbreaker 1974 ~ Lynyrd Skynyrd ~ Sweet Home Alabama 1975 ~ ABBA ~ SOS 1976 ~ Queen ~ You Take My Breath Away 1977 ~ X-Ray Spex ~ Oh Bondage Up Yours! 1978 ~ Kate Bush ~ The Man With The Child In His Eyes 1979 ~ Johnny Osbourne ~ Truth and Rights and, yes, I know nobody cares ;)
My favourites: 1970: Simon & Garfunkel ~ Bridge Over Troubled Water 1971: Led Zeppelin ~ Stairway To Heaven 1972: The Temptations ~ Papa Was A Rolling Stone 1973: Pink Floyd ~ Us & Them 1974: The Hollies ~ The Air That I Breathe 1975: BeeGees ~ Nights On Broadway 1976: Electric Light Orchestra ~ Telephone Line 1977: Fleetwood Mac ~ The Chain 1978: The Rolling Stones ~ Miss You 1979: Supertramp ~ Goodbye Stranger Im in my 20s, but i tried to not repeat artists.
@@Aurla-R2-D2 Thank YOU! I had somehow never listened to Queen's "You Take my Breath Away" until yesterday when I saw your comment and I loved it! It really reminds me of Jacob Colliers stuff.
David, I hope you read this. I'm struck by the emotional content running through - hinting at loss in your life. I enjoy your educational content, including this, not just for the wide range (on non Radiohead years 🤣) but also the background, like with Snarky Puppy. I love more that you do so touching on your deeper life experiences. We need this, as an antidote to some other popular social media content.
I feel like Once in a Lifetime is actually cut from the same cloth as the rest of the songs from Remain in Light: a non melodic, essentially speech performed by David Bryne over an new wave, afrobeat influenced, dense soundscape, strung together by a repetitive, anthemic hook

I cheated a bit with my 2008 pick, which was on a 2007 album, but released as a single in 2008, so I decided it counted, since it's my list and I really didn't wanna pick between the '07 and '08 songs, I figured I could fudge the numbers a little. 1964: "Remember (Walking in the Sand)" - The Shangri-Las 1965: "Unchained Melody" - The Righteous Brothers 1966: "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" - The Walker Brothers 1967: "Nights in White Satin" - The Moody Blues 1968: "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" - The Beatles 1969: "I'm Set Free" - The Velvet Underground 1970: "Moonshadow" - Yusuf / Cat Stevens 1971: "Tired of Being Alone" - Al Green 1972: "Rock 'n' Roll Suicide" - David Bowie 1973: "Lady Grinning Soul" - David Bowie 1974: "Wish You Were Here" - Pink Floyd 1975: "Bohemian Rhapsody" - Queen 1976: "Year of the Cat" - Al Stewart 1977: "Sound and Vision" - David Bowie 1978: "I Wanna Be Sedated" - Ramones 1979: "She's Lost Control" - Joy Division 1980: "Happy House" - Siouxsie and the Banshees 1981: "Ceremony" (version 1) - New Order 1982: "Only You" - Yazoo 1983: "Forbidden Colours" - David Sylvian & Ryuichi Sakamoto 1984: "The Beautiful Ones" - Prince and the Revolution 1985: "Cloudbusting" - Kate Bush 1986: "Sea, Swallow Me" - Cocteau Twins & Harold Budd 1987: "This Corrosion" - Sisters of Mercy 1988: "Under the Milky Way" - The Church 1989: "This Woman's Work" - Kate Bush 1990: "Enjoy the Silence" - Depeche Mode 1991: "You and Your Sister" - This Mortal Coil 1992: "Friday I'm In Love" - The Cure 1993: "Fade Into You" - Mazzy Star 1994: "Wandering Star" - Portishead 1995: "Tilt" - Scott Walker 1996: "Crazy for You" - Slowdive 1997: "No Surprises" - Radiohead 1998: "Waltz #2 (XO)" - Elliott Smith 1999: "All My Little Words" - The Magnetic Fields 2000: "We Could Walk Together" - The Clientele 2001: "In My Secret Life" - Leonard Cohen 2002: "Do You Realize??" - The Flaming Lips 2003: "Maps" - Yeah Yeah Yeahs 2004: "Modern Girls & Old Fashion Men" - The Strokes & Regina Spektor 2005: "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" - Death Cab for Cutie 2006: "Thursday" - Asobi Sesku 2007: "The Con" - Tegan and Sara 2008: "I Feel It All" - Feist 2009: "Daniel" - Bat for Lashes 2010: "I Want the World to Stop" - Belle and Sebastian 2011: "Cameo Lover" - Kimbra 2012: "Myth" - Beach House 2013: "Love Is to Die" - Warpaint 2014: "Really Love" - D'Angelo and the Vanguard 2015: "Eidolon" - BEA1991 2016: "Woman" - Angel Olsen 2017: "Shark Smile" - Big Thief 2018: "Don't Beat the Girl Out of My Boy" - Anna Calvi 2019: "home with you" - FKA twigs 2020: "Runner" - Tennis 2021: "Quiet" - Lauren Auder 2022: "The Loneliest Time" - Carly Rae Jepsen & Rufus Wainwright 2023: "I Wanna Be Your Man" - Lauren O'Connell 2024: "Good Luck, Babe!" - Chappell Roan

This video raises an interesting point regarding how people look at music differently. I don't think it would be possible for me to pick a favorite song for any given year. It's just too many songs to choose from, and it's hard for me to compare something as granular as an individual song. But I could definitely pick a favorite album for each year (though years in the early 1970s would be challenging, due to the large number of great albums in that period). I think my perspective is shaped by the fact that I've always been drawn to listening to entire albums, and I haven't spent a lot of time listening to radio, or to streaming services that are song-focused rather than album-focused.
As someone who's always listened to parts of songs, songs and only a few years (10-12 I guess) really started to listen to albums I still think it's impossible for me to pick a favourite song/piece of a year. Firstly, because there are so many options, and secondly, because I often don't know the year a song came out, outside of the works of my favourite artists.
I was in agreement until you said you were disappointed with King of Limbs. That album is amazing! Such a good vibe. I listen to it straight through every time.
Here are mine for the 60's (probably my favorite decade of music) 1960: Theme From a Summer Place (Just so damn pretty) 1961: Stand By Me (Classic, the way it sounds, the vocals, everything is perfect.) 1962: Misirlou (Probably the greatest guitar intro of all time, huge for early rock and of course the unofficial theme song for my favorite movie.) 1963: I Wanna Hold Your Hand (Classic, was going between this and Twist & Shout but the opening guitar riff for this one gave it the win) 1964: Mr. Tambourine Man (Dylan version, one of the most beautifully written songs ever, Dylan always has a knack for making the most beautiful melodies out of the simplest of chord progressions.) 1965: Like A Rolling Stone (My favorite song ever at the current moment, one of the most impactful songs for music, helped the entire rock genre develop a new level of complexity no doubt inspiring the work of future artists like JImi Hendrix and of course The Beatles and basically anyone else who gave it a listen at the time.) 1966: Hard to chose, here are some: Here, There and Everywhere ; The Good The Bad And The Ugly Theme ; California Dreaming ; Visions of Johanna ; God Only Knows. 1967: A Day in The Life ; Waterloo Sunset (both are some of my favorites too, A Day In The Life really showed me what The Beatles were all about and also just how interesting music could actually be, Waterloo Sunset is one of the most beautiful songs.) You Keep Me Hanging On by Vanilla Fudge is also one i REALLY love. 1968: So many great songs but here are a handful of my immediate highlights: Helter Skelter (The Beatles pioneering Metal might be one of the coolest things in music) ; All Along The Watchtower (speaks for itself) ; Picture Book (very fun song from The Kinks, love the guitar work and the vocal harmonies.) Folsom Prison Blues ; Mrs. Robinson. 1969: Son of A Preacher Man (Cool and sexy to the maximum degree.) ; Proud Mary (the opening riff is one of my favorites ever, very grungy.) ; Come Together. 1970: The Man In Me

46:15 also West Coast quotes the guitar lick from the Beatles' And I Love Her, which may be one of the reasons why you like that very song from Ultraviolence😁

The 1980s is my favorite decade for music. Probably because I was 11-20 years of age through that decade. I've always felt that even the worst song of the 1980s was better than the best song of the 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and what we've gotten of the 2020s so far.
@@fredo1070 Maybe just albums were better in general. I have lots of CD singles and EPs . I think its just that a new generation weren't use to stacking 45s , but playing albums so having not been use to singles in any form, they didn't buy them
@@simonmacomber7466 I first started to listen to music just before the Beatles. I liked both the 80s and 90s . But if you grew up in the 80s , I can see why you don't like the 90s. Those decades are in harmony w 2 aspects of 60s music. But 2 very different ones....The only music era I don't like is the 70s disco/punk era. But no problem, I'd just put on some Weather Report or Mahavishnu.

I still don't understand how someone that spends so much energy researching songs seems to be so unaware of the abundance of amazing Stevie Wonder songs lol
He clearly has niches he's trapped in. That being said, he's likely pretty aware of Stevie Wonder as those niches seem to be Billboard charts and the darlings of "serious" music lovers.
Historically he wasn't as widely beloved in the UK as in the US and Canada. I Just Called to Say I Love You was his only solo #1 song there and he never had a #1 album!

A very interesting list. Not heard of many of your recent selections, but will check them out. Surprised by the absence of any solo Beatle songs. For 1982 for example you could have gone with McCartney's Tug of War or Here Today. Picking a "slightly" alternative 80s list, not repeating artists and trying not to stick to the same style of music 1980 - Genesis - Turn it on 1981 - ELO - Twilight 1982 - Kid Creole and the Coconuts - Annie, I'm Not Your Daddy 1983 - The Style Council - The Paris Match 1984 - Jean-Michel Jarre - Ethnicolor 1985 - Depeche Mode - Shake the Disease 1986 - XTC - Summer's Cauldron 1987 - Pet Shop Boys - Kings Cross 1988 - Talk Talk - Desire (really hard to pick a single track from Spirit of Eden) 1989 - Soul II Soul - Keep On Movin'
Oh, that was much more interesting than expected! It's great that David stuck to the genres he really cares for and does not pretend to like all styles of music equally. He might piss off some fans of, say, Metal, Hip-Hop and EDM, but that is alright withe me ... Apart from the Radiohead madness (from which he seemingly can't be cured) the list is surprisingly varied and does contain quite a few surprises. Who would have thought, for example, that h'd give the top spot for 1990 to the fantastic (but not very well known) They Might Be Giants. I also liked the way David described songs and albums for audience members who have never heard of a particular band. It can be hard to meaningfully describe music with words, but he did it very well. So well that I took notes to seek out the music of some of the newer bands he mentioned. Finally, I'd like to praise David for also discussing the lyrics of songs - and not just the music. Few music reviewers do that these days - and that is a big mistake ...
David - a real challenge would be a list with no Beatles or Radiohead. I know, almost impossible! I like the suggestion earlier to do a list with Albums.
Awesome list! I'll do 70s just for fun 70 - The Stooges - Fun House 71 - T. Rex - Life's a Gas 72 - Todd Rundgren - I Saw the Light 73 - Toots & The Maytals - Funky Kingston 74 - King Crimson - Starless 75 - Steely Dan - Doctor Wu 76 - Ramones - I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend 77 - Steely Dan - Aja 78 - Blondie - Heart of Glass 79 - Neil Young - Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)
1978: Moving in Stereo / Cars; 1982: Our House / Madness; 1983: Changes / Yes. I think the only choice I 100% concur with is Mr. Blue Sky. fwiw. For your consideration: 2006: Faith / bitter:sweet
When you included "Tomorrow Never Knows" I knew we were fans of the same sound, but when you dropped They Might Be Giants into this, I knew you were on to something special.
Yeah. We all agree that the Beatles are great, but this was a wasted opportunity to talk about so many other good songs from the 60s. Either David needs to spend more time with the music of that decade, or stretch himself beyond just the Beatles

I think life experiences strongly influence how much we appreciate or dislike music. I’m a little sentimental for 80s music because that was the decade when I was growing up.
my 1976 pick would be "don't fear the reaper" by blue oyster cult! spotify recommend it to me two years ago, when I found out the track was released in 1976 my jaw was on the floor, it sounds like a stylized modern song (at least to me)!
That’s an all-time classic. However, kind of like what he said about that Talking Heads album, when I listened to the album, I felt that very few other tracks lived up to the quality of that song. I found this to be true throughout the blue oyster cold catalog unfortunately. When they hit though, they really hit
Excellent picks ,I agree the 80s can be hard to pick from but I think there are some gems , Tears for Fears "Everybody wants to rule the world"Head over heels " Depeche Mode "Enjoy the silence " think that was 19 90 though
The early 80's were dominated by Michael Jackson, Prince and Madonna. Don't tell me that all there songs were bad just because they were pop and motown. Dire Straits and U2 did good work too. Many 70's bands were starting to repeat themselves.
Here's my list for the years 1955-1987, compiled in the early/mid-1980s. Re-examined 40 years on, to my eyes it contains few surprises barring the odd youthful idiosyncrasy. Apologies in advance if any entry does not correspond exactly to the year of release but I did strive to be accurate! (For context, I was born in Canada in 1959 and didn't switch from AM to FM radio till the mid-1970s.) With hindsight, 1965-1980 was for me the 'golden age' of popular music. 1955: *Folsom Prison Blues* - _Johnny Cash_ 1956: *Blueberry Hill* - _Fats Domino_ 1957: *Jailhouse Rock* - _Elvis Presley_ 1958: *Johnny B. Well, okay...I stopped at some point in the 90s and just tried to skim through the rest, but basically almost no black musicians, and maybe one woman? Or did I miss one? That seems kind of strange, considering all the amazing singers and musicians through the decades who are female and people of colour!
Completely agree. When we got through the 60s and 70s without one female or Black artist I was done. I caught two woman Regina Spektor and Pheobe Bridges, and not a single Black artist. Out of 50 years. No Marvin, Otis, Donna Summer, Joni Mitchell. May unsubscribe, this is not an inclusive channel. This guy needs to broaden his horizon if he's gonna teach music history.
📍12:04 Opps! “Once In A Lifetime” came out in 1980, not 81! 😅
I guess in that case, “Once In A Lifetime” might edge out “Ashes to Ashes” as my 1980 pick, and then for 1981 I would instead choose “Under Pressure” by Queen and Bowie. 😊 or maybe “Golden Brown” by The Stranglers.
Thanks to those who brought this to my attention.
Also, I regret not putting “How Soon Is Now?” by The Smiths as my 1984 pick! 😢 Not sure how I forgot about that one!

@@otterrific7595 I actually haven't heard that song but I do know a lot of KGATLW. They definitely have their appeal and have released a lot of material but for me none of their songs stand out as "masterpieces".
@@satelitejameson Yes I think both are massively underrated!
Good list, plenty of variety with genres with I can always appreciate. 2011 is a personal favourite of mine xD
I love how you enjoy half of Steely Dan. That's such a refreshing and honest take, given most people are either 100% all-in or can't stand them.
I like most Steely Dan, except for the songs David Palmer sang on.
“Dirty Work” is still a great song.
I'm all in...
I'm all in now, but this was also my take when I was a young'n.
The only Steely track I don't like is that East St Louis thing and they didn't write that anyway.
A young guy picking Wichita Lineman nearly brought a tear to my eye. Didn't see that coming and a great choice IMO.
I just heard it for the first time based on the recommendation. Nah. Take any random song from Bob Dylan for that year.
it's an absolute classic
I adore Sergio Mendes' cover of the song th-cam.com/video/x2Eofa_XRV8/w-d-xo.html
Great example of the Fender Bass VI with the hi cut switch engaged for the solo.
The way he mispronounced Glenn Campbell's name made me feel old, lol. It's like if someone mispronounced Elvis's name.
I think it’s interesting that for you, the genre doesn’t stray far from pop. I think I would have a hard time not straying into funk, jazz, metal, rap, grunge, fusion, punk, prog, country, etc.

So do we think the music of 2008-2024 can compare to the music of 1964-1980? ;DD

1968: "there's a song that I like EVEN MORE than a Beatles song"... shocked.
Oh but don’t worry, he didn’t forget about the Beatles in 1969!
You picked my favorite song “Don’t Dream It’s Over.” Always nice to see Crowded House get some respect.
Although odd to hear that respect given without as much as a mention of Split Enz.
@@danieldaniels7571 I love Crowded House but can't stand Split Enz. I think Neil is a genius. Tim, unfortunately drags him down.
1984 a weak year?

Guys, I think David might be a Radiohead fan
@@atomdecayYou say you know everything about music theory, (unlikely, usually the people who think they know everything actually know quite little), and then call creep a 4 axis chord song when it doesn't even include that chord progression. I, V, vi, IV ≠ I, III, IV, iv. Say what you want about a song being overplayed and all that but it pays to take a slice of humble pie and get off your high horse.
That can't be correct. He said: "Helas, 2016 was a Radiohead year". A real fan would never say that. ;-)

Im amazed that someone with such diverse tastes that tend to scew towards the pioneering and experimental music RARELY talks about King Crimson. I was very surprised that you didn't pick "Everybody wants to rule the world" by Tears for Fears (or any of their songs), that song is a common pick in those kinds of lists and I understand perfectly why, it perfectly scratches an itch inside of my brain.
I used to love that song, but it at some point I started to have enough of it and I haven't been enjoying it for the last few years.
He is a fan. He performed a lovely version of it that's on his other channel 🎼

David, thank you for this. I watched the first half to confirm my biases, then stopped. But then I realized that aside from Radiohead, I know very little after 2001. I’ve built a “listen to” list from the albums you cited after that year (I’m 59).
My favourites from the '70s:
1970 ~ Edwin Starr ~ War
1971 ~ Bill Withers ~ Aint No Sunshine
1972 ~ Roberta Flack ~ Killing Me Softly With His Song
1973 ~ The Rolling Stones ~ Heartbreaker
1974 ~ Lynyrd Skynyrd ~ Sweet Home Alabama
1975 ~ ABBA ~ SOS
1976 ~ Queen ~ You Take My Breath Away
1977 ~ X-Ray Spex ~ Oh Bondage Up Yours!
1978 ~ Kate Bush ~ The Man With The Child In His Eyes
1979 ~ Johnny Osbourne ~ Truth and Rights
and, yes, I know nobody cares ;)
My favourites:
1970: Simon & Garfunkel ~ Bridge Over Troubled Water
1971: Led Zeppelin ~ Stairway To Heaven
1972: The Temptations ~ Papa Was A Rolling Stone
1973: Pink Floyd ~ Us & Them
1974: The Hollies ~ The Air That I Breathe
1975: BeeGees ~ Nights On Broadway
1976: Electric Light Orchestra ~ Telephone Line
1977: Fleetwood Mac ~ The Chain
1978: The Rolling Stones ~ Miss You
1979: Supertramp ~ Goodbye Stranger
Im in my 20s, but i tried to not repeat artists.
@@tf1266 ~ Splendid choices! :)
I care! And good choices🙂
@@AlexPerez-qy4eu ~ Thanks so much! :)

I was lost after 2000 lol but you have good taste in music so thank you for giving me new songs/bands to listen to

Thanks!
I feel like Once in a Lifetime is actually cut from the same cloth as the rest of the songs from Remain in Light: a non melodic, essentially speech performed by David Bryne over an new wave, afrobeat influenced, dense soundscape, strung together by a repetitive, anthemic hook
Yeah, the whole album is solid. His comment was surprising
More of a Psycho Killer man myself.
@@terryenglish7132Houses In Motion, The Great Curve and Crosseyed and Painless are three other great songs from the album.
@@skullduggerMore Songs About Buildings and Food and Fear of Music are even better but some people don’t want to have that conversation 🤫
@@Azure1013 A smooth transaction for me. "Life During War Time" w Remain in Light production style would fit right in there
I enjoyed this, David. Thanks.

I cheated a bit with my 2008 pick, which was on a 2007 album, but released as a single in 2008, so I decided it counted, since it's my list and I really didn't wanna pick between the '07 and '08 songs, I figured I could fudge the numbers a little.

YYZ MENTIONED YAY
Thanks for reminding me of the Witchita lineman. Don’t dream it’s over is a great song too.
David there must be some mistake, Creed has released four studio albums from 1997-2009.
😅😅😅
Yeah, and no Nickelback either
Here are mine for the 60's (probably my favorite decade of music)
1960: Theme From a Summer Place (Just so damn pretty)
1961: Stand By Me (Classic, the way it sounds, the vocals, everything is perfect.)
1962: Misirlou (Probably the greatest guitar intro of all time, huge for early rock and of course the unofficial theme song for my favorite movie.)
1963: I Wanna Hold Your Hand (Classic, was going between this and Twist & Shout but the opening guitar riff for this one gave it the win)
1964: Mr. Tambourine Man (Dylan version, one of the most beautifully written songs ever, Dylan always has a knack for making the most beautiful melodies out of the simplest of chord progressions.)
1965: Like A Rolling Stone (My favorite song ever at the current moment, one of the most impactful songs for music, helped the entire rock genre develop a new level of complexity no doubt inspiring the work of future artists like JImi Hendrix and of course The Beatles and basically anyone else who gave it a listen at the time.)
1966: Hard to chose, here are some: Here, There and Everywhere ; The Good The Bad And The Ugly Theme ; California Dreaming ; Visions of Johanna ; God Only Knows.

La Villa is the GOAT rock instrumental
The 1980s is my favorite decade for music. Probably because I was 11-20 years of age through that decade. I've always felt that even the worst song of the 1980s was better than the best song of the 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and what we've gotten of the 2020s so far.
Lots of great singles in the 80s. BTW this may seem weird, but I saw your face in a dream
They were still selling singles in the 1980s, CD killed the singles market.

1982 Joe Jackson? You weren’t even born. Your list is self indulgent.
@@atomdecay”better” here is a pretty interesting choice
Historically he wasn't as widely beloved in the UK as in the US and Canada. I Just Called to Say I Love You was his only solo #1 song there and he never had a #1 album!
Stevie Wonder is legally blind, but he pretends he’s fully blind to get pity and sell more records. That’s my take and I’m sticking to it.
There are so many songs on this list from the last 30 years which I have never heard.
And never will.
1963 Our Day Will Come
1964 Things We Said Today

1989 The Living Years
1990 I Wish it Would Rain Down
1991 None
1992 Tears In Heaven
1993 - got married, stopped charting
I tend to like folk.
Top marks for Autobahn & Logical Song - I'll have to check out the rest of your list carefully
P.S suggestions for 1991:
Mysterious Ways - U2 (my #1)
Remember The Time - Michael Jackson
Cream - Prince
I Can't Dance - Genesis
Weather With You - Crowded House
(I like our host's pick a lot too - Under The Bridge)
A very interesting list. Not heard of many of your recent selections, but will check them out. Surprised by the absence of any solo Beatle songs. For 1982 for example you could have gone with McCartney's Tug of War or Here Today.
Picking a "slightly" alternative 80s list, not repeating artists and trying not to stick to the same style of music
1980 - Genesis - Turn it on
1981 - ELO - Twilight
1982 - Kid Creole and the Coconuts - Annie, I'm Not Your Daddy
1983 - The Style Council - The Paris Match
1984 - Jean-Michel Jarre - Ethnicolor
1985 - Depeche Mode - Shake the Disease
1986 - XTC - Summer's Cauldron
1987 - Pet Shop Boys - Kings Cross
1988 - Talk Talk - Desire (really hard to pick a single track from Spirit of Eden)
1989 - Soul II Soul - Keep On Movin'
David Bennett + The Lemon Twigs = Automatic click
I saw them live last week and they are absolutely excellent!
@@DavidBennettPiano So did I and yes they were!
This album is a disappointment
I'll do 70s just for fun
70 - The Stooges - Fun House
71 - T. Rex - Life's a Gas
72 - Todd Rundgren - I Saw the Light
73 - Toots & The Maytals - Funky Kingston
74 - King Crimson - Starless
75 - Steely Dan - Doctor Wu
76 - Ramones - I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend
77 - Steely Dan - Aja
78 - Blondie - Heart of Glass
79 - Neil Young - Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)
1978: Moving in Stereo / Cars; 1982: Our House / Madness; 1983: Changes / Yes. I think the only choice I 100% concur with is Mr. Blue Sky. fwiw. For your consideration: 2006: Faith / bitter:sweet
Great Stuff 👍

My only quibble is no Waterloo Sunset. Possibly the greatest pop song ever.
@@StarCreche I was thinking the exact same.
Yeah. We all agree that the Beatles are great, but this was a wasted opportunity to talk about so many other good songs from the 60s. Either David needs to spend more time with the music of that decade, or stretch himself beyond just the Beatles
I love The Beatles but I find I can't get past Whiter Shade of Pale in 1967. It's pure bliss.

@@relicofgold those two songs really affect me emotionally

Ok I’m amazed how we have such similar music tastes. So many times I was like “OH MY GOD YES THATS A GOOD ONE!!!”
I think life experiences strongly influence how much we appreciate or dislike music. I’m a little sentimental for 80s music because that was the decade when I was growing up.
Thankyou so much for this. I restarted after a 37 year break in a covers band and solo and have struggled to get ideas for modern songs.
my 1976 pick would be "don't fear the reaper" by blue oyster cult!
spotify recommend it to me two years ago, when I found out the track was released in 1976 my jaw was on the floor, it sounds like a stylized modern song (at least to me)!
That’s an all-time classic. However, kind of like what he said about that Talking Heads album, when I listened to the album, I felt that very few other tracks lived up to the quality of that song. I found this to be true throughout the blue oyster cold catalog unfortunately. When they hit though, they really hit
Incredible song. Great year in general
@@pensivepenguin3000Very true. Interestingly they had one hit each in the 70s, 80s, and 90s .
Don't Fear the Reaper would never be released as a single nowadays w its positive outlook toward teenage suicide

@@richardbloemenkamp8532 Not bad just not my personal preference ,I do like motown but more 60s and 70s
6o's had Jimi, Cream, The who, The Kinks and Rolling stones.... Respect is needed
E.g Castles made of sand in '67
The lyric on “Cadtles Made of Sand” is a standout among Jimi Hendrix’s lyrics. Musically, the album is solid top to bottom.
Jimi's Little Wing. Surely the Stone's Jumpin' Jack Flash is the greatest song of all time.

@@pj6100 this are his favourite songs, not "these songs are objectively good and everything else from this year sucks" christ get over yourself
Glad to hear you like In My Place! Solid favourite coldplay song
That face when you never played Tony Hawks but grew up in the 90s... Bro didn't know about Rage until 20 years later lol
