Incredible talent man. Beautifully clean and accurate proportions, all without the safety net of black lines. Thank you for this behind the scenes look at what it takes to make these characters shine.
You are an amazing artist but if you ever want to make one fan beyond happy and draw a Modular Armor Iron-Man like the one from Issue 300 and the MVC series then that armor would get more love.
I'm convinced that the comic movie industry wouldn't have happened as quickly without the visions created by Alex Ross. For me, seeing Alex's work in the 90s blew my mind. Like woah...these characters could actually be live action!
Yeah I remember when I walked into my go to comic book store and being in awe and excitement at seeing The Marvels comic with Angel flying upwards with a child.
@@mickthetic thats a bit cynical. Its not shame... we do have a talking raccoon in these movies after all. Its just some things are simple harder to sell in a live action film in a realistic setting, than trying to hope the audience is immediately down for it. Take Hawkeyes costume for instance. COULD they do his comic book winged mask look? Sure. Bht does that fit their refitted origin of him being an incognito spy? Not really. So they opted to go for his ultimate look. Rheres a suspension of disbelief that is assumed in comic books that isnt present to the same extent in movies. In the comics apideys mask eyes moves as if he had muscular control of them, but in the movies you cwnt do that without it either looking bizarre or finding a scientific mechanical way to function; which is exactly what they did.
3:39 EXACTLY!!! Alex Ross gets it, this is something Marvel needs to understand more, it's about the CHARACTERS being good and important, not just because they are women but because they're well written and interesting.
@@siner2442 Nah, because I don't think Nepolean's covetous power plays were manifested through unhinged anger issues due to a neurotic inferiority pathology about being comparatively diminutive when juxtaposed against the average man. Napoleon was a strategic genuis with a great deal of confidence which bolstered his ego to continually envision obtaining more with the notion that he would obviously be the best ruler for the benefit of the entire world. So that's a different complex, I think.
My God but how I LOVE your work. How can I possibly express what your talent, your depiction of the characters, your devotion to accuracy to the original designs, your love for the original designs, means to me. Thank you, thank you sir. Now where and when can I get this book?
I've always loved the Marvel supervillains and it's so great to see them get a mural (and beautiful individual artwork) of their own; it's also really interesting hearing Alex's insights on the villains/anti-heroes and how much thought he's put into the characters. Here's hoping these get a book release some time soon!
I am beyond elated to see what I like to think is Byrne in Galactus’ eyes…. Same as Wolverine! It truly warms my heart in the current state of things regarding Marvel.
... ALEX ... . I love looking at the pencil layout . You did a hell of a job capturing the " Spirit " of say .. Buscema's Mephisto , Romita's Lizard , Green Goblin & Rhino , Trimpe's Abomination , Starlin's Thanos ( Turned to stone pose ? ) etc .. etc .. I Really like your Super Skrull , one of my favorite characters . Looking forward to seeing more in the Future . Thanks for making this video
Really enjoying this. I bought all of the Timeless covers, and bought the paper lithograph from the store. Absolutely love it and hope to see the same with the villians, which looks to be just as beautiful. These would make amazing oversized canvas pieces too!!!
Love how Hela and Galactus are there, how relentless the forces of nature are and how evil they might feel depending how and when they appear in our lifes
This was done really well. I always enjoyed the grit & rawness of the original character depictions. I always forget how short Wolverine is. Thanks for everything you do! Your skill brings life to paper & paint.
Beautiful video :) I love these videos and watching his thoughts on these characters. I hope he will do the same commentary to He-man and masters of the universe he did. I would really love to know his thoughts on the characters and their paintings he did. And would also love to see from sketch to finished painting process, normal speed not speed up video :)
That height thing was always wild to me since annihilus is this major threat but he's only 5'11 which isn't short but cyclops and daredevil are both marginally taller. Tangents aside, Alex Ross never ceases to amaze.
"ITS NOT ABOUT MAKING THE CUT FOR WHO IS BEING REPRESENTED, ITS ABOUT WHO MAKES THE CUT BECAUSE THEYRE IMPORTANT." Sir Alex Ross, i believe that quote, those words speak volumes. Alot of people need to hear this. Applies to ideas where diversity is used to be politically correct like nowadays. Anyone agree ?
I think I’d love a 5’3 Wolverine in his Yellow outfit, ripping people apart and being extremely fast, agile, and absolutely brutal. Maybe at first you’d think he’s a joke because 5’3 plus him hunching his back makes him this lil’ mad dude with lots of hair and big muscles… then you piss him off and he slashes your face off, cuts off your buddy’s leg, and shreds you last friend in half. THAT would be such a cool Wolverine. Like Kill Bill proves you can have a character in bright yellow and still make them look badass/ intimidating- especially when there’s blood all over them.
Actually Danny devito is 4' 10 . I always saw Logan like 5 foot maybe 5'3. To see him shorter would be strange, Joe pesci is 5'4 so that's about right for comicbook Logan.. Bruce Lee was 5'8. I'm 6'1 so that's little to me lol ..but if anyone draws Logan short,if thats what you fancy, go for it. If I have to draw wolverine, I always use Hugh Jackman as reference, it's what peopw I know like. Anyway, Alex you're great man, you're an inspiration to me, on my artwork.🙏🏻
Germany does not include the swastika on the interiors either, Alex. I have a German version of Heroes Reborn Captain America by Rob Liefeld and Jeff Loeb, where all of the Nazi symbol lines were closed off, making the symbol look like a window. It kind of looks like Cap is finding a legion of goons from Microsoft.
2:22 Really minor point, but Danny DeVito is actually 4 ft 10 in (1,47 cm), so at 5ft3 (1,60 cm) Wolverine would be more of a Joe Pesci or Patton Oswald
the only CORRECT portrayal of how Wolverine's supposed to look and in action like was in the Japanese movie, Shinobi: Heart Under Blade (2005)...as a character named Mino Nenki, the beast-like ninja.
When I was a kid I thought it was weird museums weren't filled with cartoon art. I thought art museum meant any kind of art not just old stuff, but I didn't see any pokemon or comic book art. I think it's weird cause you go on websites and they have beautiful breathtaking digital art but it's not "worthy" or something in the art world idk, silly
Hey guy, you are one Hell of a fine artist, but Wolverine is not as small as the tiny Danny Devito. Danny is 4'10"; 5'3" is a little up from that. However, yes he is almost never drawn to scale when around characters who should be much taller. Also, Logan is short but not really small at 190 pounds. So there IS a significant physical presence there--say alongside the 160 to 165 pound Spider-Man.
Hello! One question. You paint with gouache of some particular brand, yes I know it's the technique, not the material, but that painting turned out very well.
hes picking all the easy ones to draw. maybe not wolverine. doesnt fit with me at all...lets see u even try to get through carnage. this aint no silvestre man. ive seen this shit everywhere...lol...sorry not to be mean. alex ross is no joke either though.

first time seeing your art but i love to see some street fighter art in this style.. i dont find super heroes interesting buy your style is
I love your art alex! And i love especially your style
I'm convinced that the comic movie industry wouldn't have happened as quickly without the visions created by Alex Ross. For me, seeing Alex's work in the 90s blew my mind. Like woah...these characters could actually be live action!
You could probably extend that to the greater comic industry at large. Alex Ross's work captivated all of us!
Yeah I remember when I walked into my go to comic book store and being in awe and excitement at seeing The Marvels comic with Angel flying upwards with a child.
I wish the movies would embrace the designs the same way he does instead of being ashamed to be comic book movies

the kingdom come comics from DC look good not not as good as this art that’s amazing
"This rough sketch."
Shows a masterpiece.
🙏
That Galactus is mesmerizing 🤩
That interpretation of Hela was awesome too !
dude its what made me click on the vid. So dope.
I know right
That calm, menacing look is what gets me.
A rough sketch from Ross is a masterpiece
We are so lucky that someone as talented as Ross loves Jack Kirby’s creations as much as he does.
Just paint anything! Thank you Mr. Ross!! 🙏
STILL Alex remains a huge inspiration for me and my studio.
I really cant wait for the Timeless Villains series variants to start. Super excited!
Modern day Raphael. Thank you for continuing to sharing videos w us
Again, what a spectacular and fantastic art! Well done, Sir Ross!!!
3:39 EXACTLY!!! Alex Ross gets it, this is something Marvel needs to understand more, it's about the CHARACTERS being good and important, not just because they are women but because they're well written and interesting.
im hoping the posterbook comes out soon. Im enjoying this more than i did the heros portraits
Same!
Wolverine got that classic short-man complex. 😆
Napoleon complex LOL Also he doesn’t shower so that’s another layer not to like him…
@@siner2442

Love listening how you give each character’s description
My God but how I LOVE your work. How can I possibly express what your talent, your depiction of the characters, your devotion to accuracy to the original designs, your love for the original designs, means to me. Thank you, thank you sir. Now where and when can I get this book?
I appreciate all the time you spent talking about Hela. She looks wonderful.
Disney should use Ross’s vision as a blueprint for what the MCU characters should look like. He gets it completely.
Now I can't stop pictureing Danny Devito as Wolverine.
Height. Not looking like.
@@dawolf856 Not even height. He said Wolverine is supposed to be 5'3, but Danny DeVito is 4'9 or so.
I can listen to you talk about these characters all day.
The Hela painting is impressive, mate.

That Annihilus is freaking amazing!!! I need that to be a poster!!
When he says “this rough sketch” at the start 🤯.
Really enjoying this.

Majestic as always
looking at that great Anhilus, thinking about purple and green and villians. Wonderful Galactus too
This Dude's art style should be tha *Golden Standard,* even in *Animation.*
"rough sketch"
His rough sketches are fully finished preparation for coloring over it.
I'm a fan of your artwork ,look amazing as always
Magnificent!! Absolutely love this!!
Would have liked Blob, Pyro, Toad and Avalanche in there for The Brotherhood (and I really just want more of Ross's art!) Haha
I hope we can buy this book soon. I loved his one on Marvel heroes.
I’ve always loved realistic but classic and retro marvel
Beautiful video :) I love these videos and watching his thoughts on these characters. I hope he will do the same commentary to He-man and masters of the universe he did. Now I want to see a movie with Danny DeVito cast as Wolverine.
0:11 I like when he says "rough sketch" lol
Damn I want a poster of that sketch to hang on my wall! 👌
If that's a rough sketch I'd love to see a serious sketch. Awesome as ever.
That height thing was always wild to me since annihilus is this major threat but he's only 5'11 which isn't short but cyclops and daredevil are both marginally taller.
Tangents aside, Alex Ross never ceases to amaze.
Are we going to be getting a villains version of Timeless Varients?
so great
Alex is there a poster book coming for the villains like we got for the heroes? Need to buy the villains one as well!
This guy has the clearest most standard english pronunciation!!
What a perfect understanding of lighting. Awesome.
the face of Wolverine its amazing... fine and ultra detail
A Wolverine reboot in the movies with a 5' 3" actor would be amazing. Get someone Tom Cruise's height in there to be the character!
Even he's taller than wolverine although not by much
Genius...thanks for everything.
I love your art style
Oh wow! Glad I stumbled onto the channel. Subbed.
New poster book? Please be yes, I want doctor doom so bad!
hi, i wanted to know what are you working on in the marvel comicbooks on the moment
i love you and what ur doing
At 2:20, Danny DeVito is actually 4'10". Wolverine would tower over him. *lol*
Just beautiful love it all
Fantastic and engrossing video. Any idea if the score for this is available?
Es perfecto woww que brutal que arte !!!!!
grew up with x-men cartoons. never realized how short wolverine was!
In my opinion the best comic book artist of all time. With Alex Ross's work it always seemed like these were real people And not comic book characters
I did look it up, and Danny Devito is 4’10”, but when you said it I cracked up laughing.

would you mind telling me wich kind of gouache you use?

Master Alex Ross📜👨🏻🎨🎨📓💭
I would have like to see Maximus the Mad join the villains. Representing the Inhumans.
I feel the MCU would be much better if they followed your artistic examples.
Anyone know the first piece that plays in the background?

The best in the world
Am I watching the blacklist right now? Is ultron secretly an artist drawing the universe he resides in?
Are you fucking kidding me Alex Ross has a youtube channel and it's FREE?!
Logan never had shortman syndrome. Esp despite his rivalry with boyscout Scott.

Gustave Doré level.
Danny Devito is not 5"3
There’s no way Danny Divito is over 5 ft
