The 1999 CD mix for me was the best that has been released! The warmest and most well rounded of “Pet Sounds “ great commentary Gigs!

Thank you! Glad I caught your posting of this video about 42 minutes after you posted it. I remember when "Pet Sounds" came out. In the summer of 1966, I was attending summer school (and what kid wants to do that)? At different moments during that time, I would walk over to the local Thrifty Drug Store, to their record album section, and just simply be entranced by the album's cover.
That album cover was just so soothing to me. It really lifted me out of the conflict I was feeling going to school at that time. (Going to school during the summer feels so at cross purposes).
But the cover of "Pet Sounds" took me right out of that. (I hadn't even heard the album at that point)! Looking at the guys feeding the animals was so soothing. And the way the color of the song listings on the cover used a different color to separate "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and "Caroline No" on top of the other listing of the songs are the top of the cover, I found to be nice.
I remember when "Caroline No" came out earlier in the year. I LOVED it! The song really had a mesmerizing effect on me. But it didn't stay around too long on the radio. So I thought it was nice that the cover of the album nicely emphasized it, even though it didn't receive that much airplay upon it's initial release.
I experienced the album this way...and I hadn't even heard it yet! (Needless to say, I loved the album dearly upon first hearing it, and have never stopped loving it.
Nice to see your "Pet Sounds" collection. Although I thought you might have included the "Pet Sounds" boxed set from Capitol, which came out around 1997. And the more recent stand up version, from around 3 years ago, in a sort of book form, with several pages, as well as several discs.
    Not a criticism.

Chris man that is an awesome story! I love hearing things like that from when these albums came out. Yeah, I don't have the box set just yet. Someday!

Happy Pet Sounds Day! Great collection. Your 1966 mono copy is in amazing shape! I really want to get that 1972 reissue you showed, plus the Analogue Productions editions, both mono and stereo. I have a 2016 Capital reissue in mono, the 1972 Carl and Passions combo and original 1966 mono.

@@Giggens I found my original copy at a used record store in a small town for $30. The record itself was pretty scratched but the cover was in pretty good condition, very suitable for framing. The colors in the group shot still really pop. The green background and text on the upper half do look a bit faded by comparrison.

Great video man! I'm currently eyeing a copy of the 1988 Fame reissue LP to go with its cassette counterpart that I already have. It's not the greatest pressing, but I really like how "The Beach Boys" appears in white on the sleeve rather than the usual yellow - it makes it appear really "christmas-y"

I too have the 72' mono reissue with the brown cover but I do not have an original 66' mono record so you have the Pet Sounds Holy Grail...Its cool that your Mom was a Beach Boy's fan and you have her BB collection...the apple doesn't fall far from the tree as they say. Happy 54th Birthday to Pet Sounds! If you ever get the chance to see the 1969' movie 'Cactus Flower' there's a little Beach Boys surprise waiting there for you.

I've got an original pressing Pet Sounds framed on my wall. I've been through a few versions of Pet Sounds, eventually I decided the 1972 mono remaster version originally paired with Carl and the Passions is my favorite. I like the DVD-Audio edition with several mixes on the same disc as well, it's very useful for testing A/V equipment.

Hi Giggens , Pet Sounds is my all time fave BBs album and i am the proud owner of the American Carl and the Passions vinyl Album, which had the Pet Sounds Album with it, pressed in monural sound, they way Brian recorded it and i purchased it in Woking for £1.99 in a bargain bucket in 1981. What a Scoop !!!!
I had already owned and played the Capitol Stereo copy of PS for some time but i didnt expect to find the Carl and the Passions double , particularly as i only popped in the store for a look.
The UK copy was only single and didnt carry Pet Sounds and to date, the American copy i found is my best ever find and i treasure both albums and my copy had the " cut " on the sleeve and was in shrink, i know many fans dismiss CATP, but i really loved it and enjoyed both Ricky and Blondie now in the lineup and felt they had made a good contribution , but i will say that both CATP and PS albums are completely different in styles and i love both.

As usual you’ve put me to shame. Lol... My go-to copy is that 40th Anniversary CD/DVD - I also have the “Pet Sounds Revisited” CD that I got from “MOJO” magazine, which is various artists each doing covers in the albums running order sequence - nice rendition of “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” by Saint Etienne...My vinyl copy is an early 80’s “restored to original mono”, which I bought sometime around 1982, it’s on that green Capitol budget label that was common at the time, but I really like the way it matches the “Pet Sounds” color scheme!

    • @Giggens

It may not be a popular opinion but I much prefer the the more recent stereo mix of the album. It just made me love the album even more. The original mono is good but the later stereo mix just opens up the sound and reveals all the beautiful layers of the songs.

    • @Giggens
      @Giggens  4 ปีที่แล้ว

I still have to hear the newer stereo release!

  • @debussy10

There is evidence, of course, that Brian was thinking about making "Pet Sounds" his official 1st solo album: "Caroline No" had been released as his first solo single just before the release of "Pet Sounds", the album was almost totally unrelated to the music and lyrics of the other Beach Boys albums, and if you listen to the Pet Sounds sessions Brian originally sang lead on all the songs. In those days it was standard industry practice to have 12 songs on an album (except England where it was 14). The reason Pet Sounds has 13 songs is that the 12th song was supposed to be "Good Vibrations" but it wasn't finished in time, so Brian suggested Caroline No (which was also a Wilson/Tony Asher song) as the 12th track (even though it had been a solo single for Brian and featured none of the other Beach Boys on it). However, in the mean time "Sloop Jon B" had been released and was a huge hit, so naturally Capital wanted it on the album, even though it had nothing to do with "Pet Sounds" either musically or lyrically. Since a compromise could not be reached both "Caroline No" and "Sloop John B" were put on the album, giving the album 13 tracks. Amazingly, Capital released "Sloop John B" (March 21) only 2 weeks after "Caroline No" (March 7th) therefore not letting "Caroline No" fulfil it's sales potential, and they released Pet Sounds in between the two singles (on May 16th). Clearly they has no confidence in "Caroline No" and focussed on "Sloop John B" (understandable since "Caroline No" was not a Beach Boy single. However it is strange that Capital did not release a song from the actual album, a song by Brian Wilson and Tony Asher, until they released "Wouldn't it be nice/God only knows on July 18th, 4 months after the album's release. And showing that they had little confidence in "Pet Sounds", they release "The Best of the Beach Boys Vol. 1" only 4 months after "Pet Sounds" was released. Clearly, Capital was completely confused by the "Pet Sounds" album, did not know how to properly market it, and probably just wanted it to go away.

I had the album on cassette, vinyl, DVD-Audio, the stereo box set, the green fuzzy 40th(?) double edition, a CD from the original '2-fer' era, a later CD with steero and mono versions, and a CD from the 90s with no booklet, just a folded slip. Lost them all in a fire... I don't own it at all now.

Also, Pet Sounds completely changed my perception of music. It's actually ruined a lot of music for me as I now find everything else really bland, unimaginative and lacking in artistry. I don't enjoy guitar music much anymore, tending to lean towards classical music instead.
