I loved hearing this song. XD I'm an adult Girl Scout from Central and Western Massachusetts, and my troop sang this multiple times during badge days when we hosted them a few years ago.
Several years ago, I learned that this song is a parody of a real song about the flag of a real Canadian Military Regiment (The Princess Patricia’s Light Infantry). The flag, which was made before WW2 was named the ‘Ric-A-Dam-Doo’. I know live in the city where this regiment is based and have heard that they don’t appreciate us singing this version - which makes sense because it’s sort of like we’ve taken their anthem and turned it into a mockery of their flag. I know that my Guiding units and many other Canadian units have stopped singing the song at their request. It was a favourite of mine as a child, so I still hope to one day take some of the ideas from this song and turn it into something new for my girls to sing.
I thought when you said "light infantry" I finally found somebody singing the correct words the I heard "rickabamboo" lol least you didn't say "ridge of bamboo" that's the worst.
the words i learned were a little different but this was good! i think differences tend to be by camp/unit/region :) i'm from new england and i learned it as the princess pat lived in a tree she sailed across the seven seas she sailed across the channel two and she brought with her a rig of bamboo a rig of bamboo now what is that? it's something made by the princess pat it's red and gold and purple too that's why it's called a rig of bamboo now captain jack had a mighty fine crew they sailed across the channel two but their ship sank and yours will too if you don't take a rig of bamboo (chorus) the princess pat saw captain jack she reeled them in and brought them back she saved the crew's lives (said more like 'lifes') and you can too do you know how? a rig of bamboo (chorus 2x)
