I think the op was maybe a second ending? An ending of hope and not loss. An ending of life and not...death.
he's actually not dead :) in the manga he's 100% dead because back then lgbtq wasn't as widely accepted as today, but the anime adaptation hints that he is alive. Look up the video "Ash is alive, change my mind". They do a pretty subtle job in showing that he's alive but he is!

Do you remember when Ash said “i’m happy that at least one guy cares for me without needing anything in return..and it’s the happiest feeling in the world”? Ash really meant that. The look on his face was begging for Eiji to not get hurt. Or when they tried to hold hands in the hospital? Eiji was harshly blinded by medicine so he couldn’t actually see Ash. So the last actual time they saw each other was when Eiji was teaching Ash how to say sayounara. It feels so painful.
