But in boxing terms it’s done with the lead hand, in Ed’s case his light kick, and those moves with the flicker like the medium punches and even the heavy kicks actually serve as his “jab” as a boxer. And one of the purposes of a jab is to check the opponent’s movements and prevent them from charging in. Boxers usually like to stay at the range of ther jab, and the extended flicker hurtboxes create an illusion of speed. This is purely a critique on his animation, and it’s very very good. His light punches in game are still bad, but his jabs as a “boxer” are solid. Some are even superpowered.

Ed is a really interesting take on his archetype. Usually the "boxer with a command rushdown" has really good jabs and wants to get in and mash lights into combos. Ed is all about staying neutral and using his mediums and heavies to fish for big meaties

The thing that makes me happiest about Ed in SF6 is that even though he's a boxer who was trained by Balrog, he doesn't make Balrog or Dudley redundant: he's a very unique boxer in Street Fighter that absolutely leaves enough room in the ring for some classic street fighter boxers.

It's crazy seeing people you fought on video, I was playing in the battle hub yesterday and went 1-10 against ooze (the Ryu in the second fight) as a plat player. Had a few close rounds but he is just as good as he was in this video.
I just find it amusing that we have a boxing character and his jab alternates between a lead hook and lead uppercut, the only two lead-hand punches that aren't a jab.

It's actually pretty cool how they looked at boxing and decided to go with character that represents outfighter-style boxing (stays outside of range, focuses on defensive, powerful punches) rather than the usual "infighter" style of boxing (aggressive, lots of light punches to open people up) you tend to see in fighting games.
I've found a lot of success against a lot of characters by just buffering c.lp into s.lp and then going straight into light psycho blitz. Most characters don't have a good button at range to punish properly if you're spaced out and they block.
I found Sajam’s channel after he was done with most of the roster, so I binged all his road to masters. And now I finally get to see one in almost real time😄

Just because we as a community decided to call standing light punch "jab" doesn't mean it has to actually be a jab, and for tons of characters it blatantly isn't one. Honestly I'd have much prefered a jab that doesn't even special cancel or give any combos outside of more jabs over this short ass range. It won't stop me from maining him, tho

At 9:50 if you just do the heavy snatcher after the uppercut during the level 2 you get a safe jump instead of burning the lvl 1 I still do the same because of damage lol.
i think the ryu super reaches after any donkey kick if you do the heavy punch super. his super has different distances with LP MP HP i think; not 100% sure.
you can do stuff like whiff punish sLP into 214HP or 214PP, add super, etc, or whiff punish sLP into DR into combo. very easily creates space traps if you understand the situations, can bait/punish the opponent's whiffed jabs in your face because its 4frame and a good whiff punish tool with great conversions. like third strike dudley 5f sHK into ex,machinegun blow. otherwise he also has tons of tools to put himself right on top of his opponent where his jab does pressure well with 2-3 stringed hits. should be able to hit confirm off 2 jabs easily enough though. it's a pretty fine button tbh and i main ed lol, he has a ton going for him

His jab, as in the actual thing a boxer does, is on light kick. Drive impack kills alot if Eds tools. That charging punch move is also pretty useless outside of dizzy. You are not even plus unless you max charge it, which is very unrealistic to do without getting blown up ...
I like Ed's new tools and find him really fun. But how can you give the boxer a bad jab. Add some range with the flicker effect. You gotta abuse that fireball a little more (coming from someone not as good as you by any means).
The thing is - if you played Ed in sf5 you probably use modern controls. Having said that to get the most of out him even in modern you still need to do a lot of qc inputs to get the different snatchers and mini punches. But I know what you mean. He is a totally different kind of character. I agree with the overall sentiment of the video. A lot of people are saying the ultra bad jab range is intended because of how strong Ed is at medium range. But it's a bit too bad. I think once the honeymoon phase is over and the talking heads on the videos aren't playing him so much for the views I think we will see a drop in his popularity. Not being able to punish a good portion of moves that the rest of the cast can is a massive deal. I was pretty surprised to see Punk playing him in the recent TNS offline event in the top 8. But of course he went to Cammy for the losers final and grand final. I also think they will give his standing light the AKI couching light jab treatment. And then he will be competitive with top tiers.

absolutely brain-dead take. jab hit confirms aren't a thing that characters need to be "good" at. it's an expected default in most 2D fighters. there are no "tactics" here beyond the fact that the move doesn't function, considering their first change to AKI was to immediately fix that issue with her kit in a small patch further demonstrates this.
SF 6 director, Takayuki Nakayama, said they worked with professional boxer to get Ed movement right. But they didn't even bother to make his jab / 4f good :/

I’m actually really sad he released with such an atrocious jab, AND as a much harder to use character. I played Ed in SF5 and loved using him, yeah he was simple but that suited me just fine. I had fun, enjoyed using him and liked the character. They’ve brought him back in SF6 now, and he’s basically a completely different character rebuilt from the ground up. I don’t think this has ever happened with a Street Fighter character before, certainly not after only a SINGLE game of the character existing. This absolutely didn’t happen to Rashid. He’s not the character I played in SF5 anymore at all, and now he’s so much harder to learn and use. Is Endingwalker even playing him? While it’s cool Sajam thinks he’s “a lot cooler now” and that “they cooked making this character”, I can’t help just being really sad that they had to almost completely destroy the playstyle/character they had before, and replace it with one that is not only so much harder to learn to use, but ALSO has the worst fucking jab in the game. A jab so bad it has damn near completely eclipsed any and all discussion about the character, and is the title of this video. It makes it feel like it’s not even worth learning him. I’m very sad about Ed. Was looking forward to him so much, and now what I’ve got is a character I don’t want to play because he’s not at all the character from SF5, and it seems like very few others will play because of his atrocious jab. Nobody would play Ed if he was still SFV Modern Controls, his updated gameplay is a straight up upgrade. His Jab is a very unnecessary complaint from people judging this character off something that doesn't even factor into his gameplay

Dear Capcom. Don't give Ed a "better" jab. He's an outboxer with good pressure both in the corner and out of the corner with Snatch. The only reason ed has a terrible "jab" is because the street fighter community decided to call standing lp jab. Eds jab, as in his actual boxing jab, is his standing lk, because they decided to put all of his flicker normals on kicks. Tons of the best "jabs" in this game are shit like a dude poking you with a cane, or a slap, or a chop etc. Capcom didn't give ed a bad jab, the street fighter community gave his uppercut a bad name.

Downplay is real from a lot of people. That crouching Jab is not trash at all. And yeah, he's busted. That crouching Jab interrupts EVERYTHING and needs a nerf yesterday. People really don't like it when characters are different and require tactics that are unusual from those of the rest of the cast, huh? Having a character with a 4f low, crazy good long range buttons, and a degenerate utility super doesn't make up for not being able to do short-jab-jab from the same ranges as everyone else so WAAHHHH!!!.

absolutely brain-dead take. jab hit confirms aren't a thing that characters need to be "good" at. it's an expected default in most 2D fighters. there are no "tactics" here beyond the fact that the move doesn't function, considering their first change to AKI was to immediately fix that issue with her kit in a small patch further demonstrates this.

I’m actually really sad he released with such an atrocious jab, AND as a much harder to use character. I played Ed in SF5 and loved using him, yeah he was simple but that suited me just fine. I had fun, enjoyed using him and liked the character.
They’ve brought him back in SF6 now, and he’s basically a completely different character rebuilt from the ground up. I don’t think this has ever happened with a Street Fighter character before, certainly not after only a SINGLE game of the character existing. This absolutely didn’t happen to Rashid.
He’s not the character I played in SF5 anymore at all, and now he’s so much harder to learn and use. Is Endingwalker even playing him?
While it’s cool Sajam thinks he’s “a lot cooler now” and that “they cooked making this character”, I can’t help just being really sad that they had to almost completely destroy the playstyle/character they had before, and replace it with one that is not only so much harder to learn to use, but ALSO has the worst fucking jab in the game. A jab so bad it has damn near completely eclipsed any and all discussion about the character, and is the title of this video. It makes it feel like it’s not even worth learning him.
I’m very sad about Ed. Was looking forward to him so much, and now what I’ve got is a character I don’t want to play because he’s not at all the character from SF5, and it seems like very few others will play because of his atrocious jab.

Nobody would play Ed if he was still SFV Modern Controls, his updated gameplay is a straight up upgrade. His Jab is a very unnecessary complaint from people judging this character off something that doesn't even factor into his gameplay

Dear Capcom. Don't give Ed a "better" jab. He's an outboxer with good pressure both in the corner and out of the corner with Snatch. Him having a longer range on his (already quick) jabs would be broken.
Instead, give him special cancels on his stand LK ooooor an 18f standing overhead on forward HK with even better range.

The only reason ed has a terrible "jab" is because the street fighter community decided to call standing lp jab. Eds jab, as in his actual boxing jab, is his standing lk, because they decided to put all of his flicker normals on kicks. Tons of the best "jabs" in this game are shit like a dude poking you with a cane, or a slap, or a chop etc. Capcom didn't give ed a bad jab, the street fighter community gave his uppercut a bad name.
