The cultural role of the DJ in relation to dance music and nightlife has been transformative from the 1970s through today. Starting in the disco era of the 70s, DJs began experimenting with mixing techniques, creating seamless transitions between songs and becoming the stars of the dance floor. DJs have evolved from mere record players to influential tastemakers, music producers, and cultural icons. Our two guests on this show share their journey as veteran DJs participating in the evolution of dance music from its disco roots to house, techno, EDM and modern-day outdoor dance parties. They share insights to their process of selection and mixing, brand building, adapting to changing musical genres and new technologies.
DJ Stormin' Norman is renowned as Founder, DJ and Executive Producer of Harlem’s most anticipated summer festival, the Sundae Sermon Music Festival. In the ‘90s, he was part of a groundbreaking DJ collective that brought live mixing to daytime radio on WBLS-107.5 FM. For decades, he has played New York’s major clubs, elite private parties, sports events, fashion shows and world touring.
DJ Cosi, a native New Yorker, has been crafting unforgettable nights for over two decades. Known for his versatility, deep musical knowledge, and ability to keep crowds moving, Cosi has left his mark on New York's nightlife scene. He co-founded and DJ'd at the Freedom Dance Party for 14 years, held a residency at Red Rooster in Harlem, and is currently the co-founder and main DJ of NYC Dope!, a dance party and social events company launched in 2018.
Throughout his career, Cosi has performed at a wide array of venues across New York City and beyond, from Brooklyn Bowl to Central Park Summerstage, and internationally in locations like Las Vegas, Puerto Rico, and Barbados. His talent has been sought after by major brands and events, including Nike, MOMA, CBS shows, and the Brooklyn Night Market. With a knack for reading crowds and delivering surprising, joy-filled sets, DJ Cosi continues to delight fans old and new, week after week.
