What's the diameter of the top pulley and the bottom pulley? What is the pulley ratio?

Philip Kupfer, I have one question, how did you affix the pulley to the pto shaft, , did you weld a female end to a regular round shaft and then through the pillow block bearing, then use a set screw or weld the pulley to the shaft?? sort of wondering how you did it,. Great work great build,

Really nice and simple. To you have brake to hold a load in suspension? Or I guess you probably chain the logs instead of having the winch hold them while driving them out.

Phillip - now that you've had this for a few years, I'm curious how it's holding up for you. I own a logging winch I bought new and find it very handy for my work in the woods. A friend is considering building one. He had not considered a belt drive, but that certainly simplifies construction over a chain drive with a clutch.
Has the belt drive worked out well? Any idea what kind of pull you can get out of it? Are there things you would do differently if you were building it again? (I'm thinking he may need to build in some gear reduction so he could get his tractor RPMs up a bit without going too fast on the log. His tractor is relatively low HP, so he may not get much torque running down near idle, as you seem to be doing.

John McNerney at this time , there as been no response to you. It would be nice to know the size of his upper and lower pulleys for your buddy planning to build his own winch.
The point I want to share is that he was using a yanmar ym1700 tractor, roughly a 20 hp diesel engine. The 17 in the number provides the PTO hp.

Seems like just hooking up a chain or cable and dragging it with the tractor is same outcome...being you gotta have tractor either way, just wasted more time and materials making the contraption...Just over complicated it, simple is best....

you allways cant just hook up and drag /skid the log with tractor idea of the winch is to get the log out from hard to reach places like between trees deep slopes and so on

Also frequently one wants to drag several trees to the tractor, then drag all aout at the same time.

You obviously have never used a logging winch. With it, you avoid needing to create a trail up to every tree you want to pull out. If you are pulling out more than just an occasional tree here and there, they are a fantastic tool. I waited years trying to justify buying one before I finally made the jump. I've used one for almost 10 years now, and will never be without one again. Indispensible for working in the forest with a tractor!
