Very nice video, and very nice museum that I visited at least in August 2023. In the video, I see a sewing box with a singing bird, no? who made it? because I had seen a copy of Frères Rochat from 1815?
Frères Rochat.
Thank you very much for your kind words and your question! All the necessaires (sewing boxes) displayed in the video were made in Palais Royal in 1810-1830's. We do not know names of any specific workshops or masters, because production of such accessories at Palais Royal was relatively small, but fast operated and high volume industry. Unfortunately, authors usually did not put their individual stamps or signatures.Quantity of repetitions of one particular necessaire could reach 3000 pieces in extreme cases. There was even a "Palais Royal style" in the European jewelry art of the first half of the 19th century. It is characterised by general orientation on Rococo period esthetics, rich application of mother-of-pearl and miniature music mechanisms and automatons. Frères Rochat were involved in the Palais Royal jewelry network. According to one theory, they worked in close collaboration with Palais Royal masters on numerous occasions. According to other hypothesis (which I find much more convincing), they were only commissioned to design singing birds that were sent to Palais Royal and installed in the necessaires. There is a necessaire of 1815 with singing bird signed by Rochat in our museum's collection. It is indeed very similar to the ones you may see in the video. Other Palais Royal style necessaires with singing birds signed by Rochat are now in the Royal collection of Britain, as well as in the English and Swiss private collections. Palais Royal nécessaires with Rochat birds initialy belonged to Princess Marie Clothilde of Savoy, Queen Mary of England, King Farouk of Egypt and Caroline of Brunswick (consort of George IV). They are real gemstones in the arsenal of Palais Royal tradition, wonderful and magnificent princely gifts. We have a big collection of musical boxes by Frères Rochat in our museum. You can explore it on our website by typing "Frères Rochat" in the search line. Good luck!
Thank you very much for your answer. I had the pleasure of visiting your museum last August. I discovered some exceptional pieces. in the private collection of "Patek Philippe" in Geneve ... I was able to discover and work with the "Necessaire with singing birds and Music" by Rochat 1825. with the famous FR signature in an Oval. @@ilia.v.malakhov
I worked for Reuge in Sainte-Croix after i was founder of Freres rochat firm in Switzerland and i will move in Moscow next year perhaps for a new automaton project @@ilia.v.malakhov
