... and Morphy wasn't defeating just some beginning players at his local club. He was beating some of the best players in his country ... and then the world.
Morphy was up 2.5 to 0.5 going into this game. A draw would have been enough for him to clinch the match. Maybe Lichtenhein blundered as he was trying to push for a win in a drawn endgame in order to stay in the match as either a loss or a draw would lead to him being eliminated.
Well, Lichtenhein approach is the best I've seen from people that play against Morphy, I would have actually named the video the Lichtenhein formula :P
@PrinzVonLangdelberg I've watched the Anderssen series and to tell you the truth I thought Anderssen came close to deconstructing Morphy or rather unraveling him but even though he lost it the contest was far closer than the scoreline suggests (and it's mho alone you can disagree with me) Anderssen made a lot of mistakes at crucial stages and A3 is not so bad if you can follow the complex lines after that at least Anderssen showed to the world well at least a few hints that Morphy was not invincible he was not infallible after all the aura of invincibility that Morphy had it did come down a bit but on the flip side I'm sure after his experience against the European masters so unlike American players morphy must have become even stronger more powerful one thing about Morphy he was an extraordinarily quick learner absorbing very quickly different openings and strategies that's to his credit but it's just our bad luck he stopped playing after that.still in mho he is the goat

Fischer had an IQ level of 180 and carlsen is said to be 190. So,my assessment is he was extraordinarily gifted. Of course this is all surmise. But the indications are all strongly in his favour.
Lichtenstein was very strong . Not getting destroyed by morphy is pretty amazing. Especially considering morphy always got better against an opponent after the first game or two
At 7:35 was it possible for Lichtenhein to maneuver his knight from C3 to E4 with checkmate? In this position, the white pawn and white knight are taking away all squares from the black king, but it's possible that there was a way to block the check. Lichtenhein went to E2 instead, away from the action. E4 is also a more central square from which to gobble up pawns.

It's completely obvious that taking the pawn on a2 loses the bishop; Morphy must have known that playing that would leave him down a piece which makes me wonder whether he had some idea of how he was going to make the position work. If Morphy did know what he was doing then... wow, just wow.

I think morphy pushed the pawn to A5 after theodore moved his knight to e2.. I think theodore wanted to go knight e2 to g1 to f3 to guard the e5 pawn but once morphy played a5 .. It underminded theodores knight to e2, g1, f3 idea.. Because morphy had a 3 to 1 pawn advantage.. .. So i think theodore changed his idea and thats the blunder and thats why they didnt make the rest of the game public.. Maybe if he continued the game morphy just picked him apart because the e5 pawn finally because a weakness.. But knowing morphy he wouldnt of took the pawn asap.. He would of waited and caught theodore in a zugwang.. And used the a pawn to distract theodores king just enough to get him out of position to win the pawns and theodore would have no choice but to give up the knight to try to get his king closer to morphys fast pawns..

After watching the different opponents and games in the first ACC what I find is that all of them when they could not defeat Morphy they used extremely cynical negative and often downright stalling tactics to bring him down it was not sportsmanship but gamesmanship very bad of them but still he won now what more can you say he truly is the goat

I bet morphy went a5 and sacked the pawn to get the king away from the c4 pawn so you could capture than attack the knight than morph would of captured the pawn on e5 and than cut the king from going across the board to defend his pawns.. And than morphy would of walked his pawns to victory..

Was thinking the same, maybe somehow white can pick up both pawns for the knight and get back on time to survive.
White blocks the passed pawn and is able to hold this.

Could be that Liehtenhien played very aggressive since he needed a win to advance since a draw would result in a loss in the match.
They might not have counted draws at all. Not sure though. But it was popular in those times to just not count draws.

So after b4+, Kxa4, the b pawn needs the king to escort it to b1, but the e2 knight blocks c4 so black can do no better than draw
