Wicked is adapted from the Broadway musical and takes pace before the Wizard of Oz...... also this is part 1 of 2.... the second part I believe is Elphaba's progression to become the Wicked Wich of the West
Act 1 of the Musical takes place before Dorothys Story. A big part of act 2 takes place at the same time as when Dorothy is in Oz.
