The instagram thing really punched me in the gut. Its so true to how I feel, but I still hope that’s not the reality of getting work based off the number of followers you have.

not necessarily on the followers, but if you have great stills you can use it as a portfolio to show directors.

@@manny2493 I'm a director and I couldn't give a fuck about stills. As a self shooter on some of my own projects, I know how misleading stills can be. Show me a scene of a film you've shot that you're most proudest of. If I like it, I'll watch the whole film. Then I'll meet with you to discuss technical stuff, your cinematic influences and also get to know you as a person and if you're someone I want to make a film with.
UPDATE: I also don't care about your showreel where you cherry-pick your best shots and cut it to exciting music, also very misleading. I want to know if you can tell a story and capture the essence of a screenplay.

Sadly some of the great stuff we get on this channel are harder and harder to do in Hollywood because of all the woke fanatical religious folks and cancel culture. Why can't just Hollywood make good films with strong compelling characters, and good storytelling and leave politics out of it. This channel is a good reminder of the old days when creative skilled people were allowed to do their work. Kudos.

Because, sadly, the people working on those films have lives that are affected by their working environment or lack thereof. Hollywood CAN make good films with strong and compelling characters, but I think the world is asking for creatives to not be lazy. "politics" are in every aspect of life...this comment section as an example; you could have chosen to keep the politics out of it, but you chose not to because you felt the conversation needed to be had. It can be pleasing to think of a romanticized time in which "creative skilled people were allowed to do their work", but it's about time to take responsibility and move forward as both individuals and a collective.

@@anzhonnycastillo1731 Well, there was always pressure for creatives to balance art with economics, but the level of political dogma we see these days is something else. The political narrative has to be put over every creative individual narrative. In that sense its similar to what we have seen in communist countries. This makes it very hard to produce genuine quality work. And furthermore the kind of people that are promoted as stars, and the producers and others are there because of their political affiliations not skill or merit. Some of the projects with highest budgets seem to hire people I would not let park my care, much less be in charge of it. It is an important conversation to have. Politics has indeed infected everything.
its true that there was always someones nephew here and there being cut ahead of the line, and generally film industry can survive that. But these days its religious dogma stamped over everything. I'm surprised they are not calling black camera usage racist. All those white people using black cameras. That is racist. lol But we are close to that absurdity. I treasure this TH-cam channel for as far as I can tell it did not bend the knee yet, and it still produces some of the best content on the topic of cinematography. The people they interview are real deal. It was just hard to escape the irony I guess you would call it. Where Advice for working in the film industry that is offered here soon is becoming academic, the ideologues are hiring those who in the party.

@@KrunoslavStifter Well I would have to disagree. Yes, there may be a push for proper representation among other things, and yes, there are some times where this push may negatively affect the product and may be quite unnecessary. But there are also a significant number of times when this push is needed. I believe there needs to be a balance and I believe the balance will come. As with any invention or practice, it takes a couple of iterations to attain anything close to perfection. I do believe there's no need at all to try to compare what is happening to communism, that would be an entire conversation on its own. Honestly, I find it a bit off--the downplay of someone's nephew over the attempt at inclusion( as I'm assuming is what you mean). We are free to create and free to express ourselves and that has not changed as there are now even more mediums to do so. Now, if your goal is to attempt to get your stories through a barrier of Hollywood executives, you will always be set back in incredible ways, as the industry has faced corruption from the beginning. I believe in being respectful towards one another, but I believe I have to be frank to move the conversation forward. It is ridiculous to compare these things to such silly example as with the "black cameras". I hope you were using this example to illustrate a point. But even so, if such thing were to happen, which will not, then it is up to us to speak up. I love to tell stories and I love this powerful medium of cinema, but none of this will ever amount to the importance of humanity, the love, or empathy we all deserve. I apologize in advance If I assumed inadequately in order to fill in some blanks, If so, feel free to correct me .

@@anzhonnycastillo1731 Balance and perfection? You really believe that. Year after year the quality of movies has gone down, and since 2000's I can barely count the number of movies on fingers of one hand that are note worth. And as if endless remakes, reboots, sequels and prequels were not bad enough, these days they are more than happy to not even hide the fact that movies, especially fan favorite franchises are nothing more than vehicle for identity politics. Star War, Marvel, DC, Star Trek etc. Woke trash in filmography terms, but that is what they do now. Everything is political.
"Black Panther" seven nominations at the 91st Academy Awards including Best Picture, with wins for Best Costume Design, Best Original Score, and Best Production Design. Black Panther is the first superhero film to receive a Best Picture nomination, and the first MCU film to win an Academy Award. LOL. If you don't smell blatant identity politics in that one, I am afraid you are beyond help. They gave it Oscar for blackness, while they gave Oscar for "inclusion" in the case of Suicide Squad. And don't you dare criticize it.
Meanwhile the likes of The Shawshank Redemption, even back as far as (1994) didn't win a single Academy Award. Perhaps the most universally beloved movie in history of Hollywoood didn't have enough representation I imagine. And if you think I'm exaggerating with "black cameras".... didn't they introduce Oscar section for promoting more diversity" meaning they will now officially give oscars for being political. Not even trying to hide it. Also didn't they say that in Simpsons white people will no longer be able to voice non white characters? I guess only yellow voice actors will now be hired, and concept of acting is no longer practiced in Hollyweird.
Perhaps you are not aware of it, my friend but when you use the words "inclusion", "diversity" or "representation", you are using Orwellian Newspeak that has nothing to do with good film making. And when Academy Awards are given to people based on the color of their skin and or political support instead of merit in the filmamking category.... you know something is rotten in the state of Hollyweird. When celebrities are trumping one another for virtue signaling points, utterly clueless and detached from the reality and very same people they are attempting to pander. Yeah I don't think that is filmmaking at its finest.

@@KrunoslavStifter Do I really believe we will have balance? Yes. I trust that when this goes "too far" we'll stand up and speak out...it is the way it always happens and this conversation is an exact example of it. I never denied "identity politics", I'm merely attempting to explain the need for it and simply the reality of it. The reality is that this industry has ALWAYS had to do with "politics". The Oscars have also been questionable since the beginning, which begs the question: Now that there seems to be some type of movement to attempt to open more doors to the people whom , in many cases, were badly affected by the influence of this business(not only within the industry, but outside of it as well), why do you question its integrity and romanticize the old days as if they weren't still filled with corruption? I do dare criticize a picture like Black Panther and many of the people I've met in the industry do as well. We speak on them whether we agree or not. That has always been the way. Voice actor's decision to step down was their own. Was it influenced by the climate of what's going on? definitely. Was it the right move? I don't believe so, but that is a completely separate conversation. No, in a vacuum and in an ideal world, those words(inclusion, diversity) would have nothing to do with filmmaking. But in a reality such as what we're in, it has an impact on life in general and how we interact. In case you were not considering it, films are a reflection of our everyday lives in one way or another; our experiences, opinions( political or otherwise), and other views. I will agree that cinema is not at its best at the moment, but I believe the fundamental way in which you and I are looking at this is very different. I admire your love for cinema, but I also urge you to try to see it with empathy, and in the light of life as a whole.
