I've tried so hard to get it to a presentable state, but sadly the amount of mold present on the print is making it impossible to restore digitally. We're considering some major film cleaning to get rid of the mold, but it may not work, we're unsure.
@@KinekoVideo Lets hope the final restoration won't look bad. Like the 4k transfer for "The Devil" (1981) Where the movie has mold through out it, and then they release it on Blu-Ray.
I still find it kinda funny that the idea of anime OPs having sung lyrics came entirely as a result of the English dub of Astro Boy '63; reportedly, the English theme was so well-liked it got translated into Japanese and incorporated into the Japanese version of the series, setting a standard that other shows would follow to this day. Really, this is hugely important to the history of anime, and even if the quality isn't ideal (if the description is to go by), to see it look this good at all is pretty great!
@@ViewpointProd Huh, I wasn't aware about the 1959 version's existence; from the looks of it, it's pretty obscure, so I get the feeling that it's place in the franchise's history was never well-documented (at least not outside of Japan). From what I was told, the JP version originally used an instrumental theme, which was given lyrics in the English dub, then back-translated and incorporated into the Japanese airing; I wasn't aware that it was actually based on an earlier adaptation's intro until now. I decided to look the toku version up out of curiosity, and while it's not identical to the 1963 theme, the similarities are indeed pretty close. Learn something new every day!
I realized that in the 1980s series, the end credits theme in Japanese says astro boy, which if you know anything that's his English name, in Japan he's called the mighty atom. It's just in the song,it's not in the series to my knowledge, but the Japanese were definitely influenced a little.
@@ViewpointProd Not really? I've heard the 1959 OP, it sounds nothing like this. That said I don't think the dub would've had any bearing on anime OP lyrics anyway. Tetsujin 28's anime came out and had lyrics within the same year, and even outside the genre of "Classic shounen action" other anime or tokusatsu had theme songs. It's kinda the natural thing to do.
I eat this stuff up. With where we are headed in regards to digital toolsets, A.I. upscaling, etc., it's amazing to see what is capable even today. Fantastic work.

now ngl, i prefer the raw unrestored scan, it looks sooooo LoFi and i love it lol, but to be frank, the restoration job does still retain a lot of the film damage (which is good for me lol)
I bet there's probably some programme based on AI now that could do this kind of restoration and even outputting in really high resolution in a matter or minutes these days. :-o
True, of course I blame TV stations for wanting color content to begin with. Not our fault our our Boomer parents were stuck watching them. TV was and still is a crappy business.
What software are you using for these restorations? I've just scanned some Super8 film myself, and I'm planning to learn how to digitally restore footage.

none of that is true, the japanese theme is based off of the tokusatsu's theme from 1959, the anime was a re-wording of it.
