Sometimes yeah, most of us learn though so we can play our favorite songs. Only reason I can shred and play with good technique is because I happen to love really technical metal, not for showing off. I’d never just go to a music store and show off like that, most musicians don’t even like it either, shredding doesn’t take much skill. Finding meaningful notes, harmony, and progression is where the real skill is at. You can usually learn to shred in only 6 months, but you’ll forever be learning how to make your notes actually have meaning.
