  • I saw an ad for a Stratocaster on Reverb a couple days ago where a guy described the color as “seafood green”….oh man, that got me…
Anyway, here’s a 17 minute ramble from a guy who hasn’t been around many people any older than 9 years old in several days.
If anyone out there knows what issue of guitar player mag i got “writ up” in recently please tell me, cuz i can’t find the fucking thing....like who is on the cover?
totally unrelated, dig this crazy video....my son watched this and all he said afterwards was "knuckleheads..." kinda under his breath......hahaaaaa, wonder where he got that?

Aw man... I met Phil Collins and Chester Thompson once. I was at Berklee college doing a recording session in Studio B, like my junior year, so around 1988.
It seems that someone was taking them on a tour of the school before their gig that night, and they came in the the control room while we were doing a take. I don't even remember what we were playing, but evidently they were liking what they heard because the engineer called me into the control room and holy crap, there was Phil Collins and Chester Thompson standing their grinning at me. Phil introduced himself (as though I didn't know exactly who he was) and he asked me if I was the drummer, and I said yeah. He said, "Man you sound fucking great! You're going to go far in this business if you keep that up." I just about passed out! They hung out for a little bit and walked around my kit in the live room tapping on the cymbals and asking questions. I told Phil he could play the kit, but he declined and said they had to get going.
And then poof, they were gone and my head was spinning for the rest of the WEEK. It was a great day!

The "cut of his jib" refers to the shape of a jib sail. Back in the day you could tell whether a ship was friend or foe by the "cut of her jib". Liking the "cut of his jib" is a compliment.

Tom, whenever I come home in a shitty mood, which is most days, I put on the Plexi Soul Homeskoolin Edition and plug in my 57 (Reissue of course) Les Paul Goldtop and play over first song to last and it makes me feel better about myself, my playing, my life. It lifts me. Thank you for that.

You are right, Buk... In Sailing ship times in Nelsons time and into the1800's AD etc - other ships captains could tell who actually captained a ship by 'the cut of their jib' ie how and when they would set their jib sail when changing direction etc... (the jib sail is the sail on the very front of the ship - the first to hit the wind)... kind of like a driving style.

Ah, Uncle Larry, you get me every time you talk about your boys. Though mine are grown, i was a "solo dad", and they remain the best part of life. Now, i am totally with you about Eric Johnson and Phil Collins, groundbreakers that for some reason attract what seems undue criticism. Its funny, and sad how easy it is for some in "inter web world" to be so quick to find fault with those who did the work, paid the price, took the chances to be great. Kinda weird. Oh, and you are in that same league of genuine good people like Mr Johnson. We so appreciate you.

I can sort of glean some of that off you when my boat is rocking. Like playing each day, settling down, bringing all the distraction buzz to a focal point, strings on a guitar. In the end, one true, real voice, a story, or a song, to string us along and forget our troubles a minute and chill. Appreciate you.

Hey Tom, when you go back out, ask Ann what came of the 'twin' matching miniature Les Pauls, built by Dave Petschulat, just for the sisters? I had him build me one also. He also built for Steve Morse and Eddie. Cool 'little guitars' :)
