  • In this video I show my cloud oil painting process for painting expansive cloudscapes. Painting clouds in oils is a great way to practice painting composition, edges, and mark-making. I discuss these in my oil painting process for this expansive cloudscape oil painting.

    Your tutorial is eloquent, lovely voice of course. I am 76 years young and started to paint (sorry learn) clouds, thank you, muchas gracias as we say in Malaga (spain). Roberto

    Skyscapes are my favorite subject to paint. You are right that they seem so abstract. I like the movement you convey in your work. It feels very fresh. Lovely!

    Mixing an abundance of key hues at the start is such a good practice! It streamlines the whole process and ensures that there is enough of everything without trying to match a color later. We were really interested in how you manipulated the paint at intervals with a palette knife- we know a few artists who make a habit of lifting off excess color to control the texture of the surface, and to make sure that the canvas doesn't "load up" too much during the session. Very nice!

    Nice work on the clouds. Agree that they are a way into abstraction. Good point.

    Wonderful dramatic clouds without overstating the storm. We don't actually get clouds like that too often in norcal of course. ;-) Our plein air group is going out to a part of the sonoma coast that is notorious for its fog. Any tips (or demos) on a dramatic foggy scene over dramatic cliffs/landscape?

    • @christinakentart
      @christinakentart  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you! Yeah, I grew up in Texas, and sometimes I miss the big clouds we had there! That's a good question about painting a foggy scene... I don't have any demos of that, but one thing I enjoy about painting fog is noticing the subtle shifts of hues within the greys. It is easy to just paint gray fog, but it gets a lot more exciting when you can find the blues, greens, pinks, etc in the fog.

    I loved this video :) I am new to this medium and it's a little scary for me to transition into it but watching your video helped the nerves a little. Also how is your panel attached? I have been struggling painting on panels.

      Oh wonderful! Glad to hear it helped. I attach my panels to a board using mounting putty.

    What are the colors on your palette?

  • @Anonymoi

    This is great! Very helpful. I am intrigued by the vertical palette, which I have seen a couple other people do, too. Is this a common way of working, or something people started doing to make it easier to film? Do you use no solvents and mediums? I’m quite interested in working that way off-camera.

    • @christinakentart
      @christinakentart  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! The vertical palette is just for filming - I prefer a horizontal palette because it feels more stable. At the moment my studio is at home, and for health reasons I don’t use any solvents or mediums, other than when I am toning canvases or cleaning brushes (which I do outside). Have you tried painting without mediums before?

    • @Anonymoi
      @Anonymoi ปีที่แล้ว

      @@christinakentart Thanks for responding. I did take a look around and apparently the vertical palette/“parallel palette” is a thing. I would like to try it but can definitely see how it could be less stable. I see people using iPad holders and other homemade solutions to add stability. I have painted with Gamblin’s solvent-free mediums, but have not painted totally medium-free. I always think that the paint wouldn’t move well without some kind of medium, although I usually use Gamblin paints and they are fairly loose straight from the tube. I am going to try it because you get great results and it seems so much simpler and more streamlined. I don’t know why it seems so foreign and new to me, like, “wait, you can do that!?”
