    I think it isn´t even that unlogical that all the people working on the fans seem to have died immediately, since when the nuke hit, an incredible amount radiation was released into the air, which was then carried to all the fans, meaning that all people near fans would have been the first to be hit with radiation, and probably even with the highest amount of it, since it would have worn off pretty quickly. And if anyone is now thinking: But they were expecting a nuke, so they would have been using filters, wouldn´they? Yes, and no! First of all, there is basically no filter that could handle such amounts of radiation. And second: the air-system was still under construction, meaning that they might no have been built in, or activated at the point of time.

      Orrrr, at vid time 10:50 (ish) Apple walks past what appears to be some sort of main gas valve right next to what also looks like a main fan. This could explain why all of the bases personnel died also!
      But your theory makes a lot more sense man.

    5:38 thenthapple, I guess you are too young to know a Microfiche machine when you see one. It was a way of archiving paperwork and books before we had microprocessors. It's basically just a plastic transparency with a tiny miniture photo of the pages, and those machines are the viewers.

    I believe that the turrets were set up by Kellogg as, when you go to the fort before you have unlocked the quest to hunt him down, none of them are present. The syths still are, however, and the lift in the central area is borded up. However, the turrests are all connected up to the door terminal by the lift out, so... who knows? Kellogg may know his shit, but he didn't strike me as much of an electrical engineer to be able to wire up multiple turrets to a single command console

    • @gameplayer2014
      @gameplayer2014 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Mind you he did have an augmented brain. They could have given the information to do that at the Institute.

    • @Gorbz
      @Gorbz 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Possible, yes. And I suppose it does stand to reason that, if you ignore the game mechanics, he could have removed the boarded up lift, gone down to the control room, then up to the roof that way in order to set up new turrets

    • @dccrulez
      @dccrulez 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The main character shows no experience in electrical engineering before his military career yet he is able to set up turrets and connect them to terminals.

    Someone may have said already, but my guess is that the fans piped radiation into the lower levels. Because maintenance was incomplete they were unable to shut them down.
    This would explain the dead in the lower areas that should have survived the blast but clearly did not.

    The bunker doesn’t seem to be a place made to work as a vault. It wouldn’t necessarily protect them from an atomic attack. And, as you pointed out, there is a particular amount of vents with dead bodies close to them. That’s not something that is showcased so explicitly in other places, so it could be a hint to what happened.
    My guess is that most people downstairs died at the immediately after blast due to severe radiation poisoning.

    Microfiche - a flat piece of film containing microphotographs of the pages of a newspaper, catalog, or other document.
    You diuretic put dozens upon dozens of documents onto a single page.
    Computer hard drive storage rendered these items obsolete.

    Considering the depth of the command center, the fans probably circulated air below the surface and when the bombs hit fallout was likely brought into the bunker exposing them to radiation.

  • @MidnightFire1222
    @MidnightFire1222 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I've never noticed this until now, but on the map of the world hanging up in the command center where you kill Kellogg, at about 12:19 or so, Africa is really smushed into Europe. The Mediterranean Sea that sit between Africa and Europe is gone, and there's no sign of the Red Sea either. Makes me wonder what the heck happened to that part of the world. Someone had to consciously create that asset, so I wonder what the reasoning behind it is. (I know this video is old now but I'm just noticing this after rewatching it.)

    I think those devices that you were looking at 5:38 are Microfilm readers, they look very similar and it would make viewing microfilm from aerial recon easier. The room was probably a location for intelligence officers to view recon photographs and the area could have been a Operations room for monitoring the battlefield and planning operations.

      microfilm is also much more resiliant than paper or computers and can be read with a magnifying glass if need be, explaining it's widespread use outside the military in the Fallout universe.

    Ah.. Fort Hagen... I truly enjoyed destroying the synths, and Kellogg. xD Hmm, yeah, I am also confused over the bodies within the bunker. At first, I thought that it might have been radiation that have seeped into the base, but there are no ghouls. I also thought that there might have been some sort fighting going on inside the base, since it would have been a prime loot spot like the nearby Boston Mayoral Shelter, but the armory is still full of weapons....

  • @tryingnot

  • @WastelandSeven
    @WastelandSeven 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The machines you wanted to know about look to be either film or micro-fiche reader machines. (my guess is micro-fiche) Basically before good cheap scanners and affordable large storage devices they would take photographs of important documents then put them on film or transparent plastic sheets called micro-fiche. You would put the flimsy plastic slide in a tray with a powerful back light and several lenses and mirrors would project the document image onto the screen, and you would use controls to move the tray to the page you wanted to view. Oddly enough, some large libraries still have these monsters and use them for records they haven't got scanned into their servers yet. My Mom worked for the state of Florida and they were still using them in the late 70's and I think even in the early 80's.
    I think on this model you push buttons to find the page you want.

    I always assumed the men who died by the vents died from sucking in radioactive air.
    like the vents are bringing air in from the surface and obivously filtering it but eventually the filters clogged and someone had to unclog them and due to the lack luster fasilities the men who were on mentance eventually died from exposure to radiation from the radioactive dirt that would be on the filters and in the vents

    The air circulation system was not finished, or needed repair. It is reasonable to suspect that whatever air purifying device was supposed to cleanse the air, was not functional. When the blast hit the vents flooded the building with radiation.

  • @DjDolHaus86
    @DjDolHaus86 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    The damage is reminiscent of a how a bunker buster missile works by using the strength of a structure against itself to maintain the force of an explosion so it travels down corridors and vents looking for a way to expel the massive overpressure. A nearby nuclear explosion would have created that same pressure wave and killed most of the people inside without a blast door to get in its way and any survivors would have died of radiation poisoning within a few days giving them time to get into some of the more unusual final positions.

    You got it right on the nose, those are supposed to be microfiche machines, or their (pre-war) modern equivalent. Doesn't look like they advanced very much in terms of the technology. Judging by how new the transistor was in the Fallout universe, it's likely that those were necessities in any office around the war; it'd take a while to transfer all physical data to holotapes, and with what Fort Hagen's mission (probably) was, there wasn't really time for that luxury.

    TheNthApple, I began work for the US DoD during the early 90's, at that time it was not unusual to have 'many' refrigerators scattered throughout the building that were stocked with beer and wine. It was never consumed during core work hours but after that the offices would fill with cigarette smoke and much adult beverage consumption. The machines at 5:40 seconds you were asking about are microfiche readers. These were still in use up until the late 90's. I've seen facilities something like what is in the video, many have a small dispensary for a medical staff and to treat minor injuries, and do routine health checks like blood pressure, treat headaches, etc. Some facilities have bunk rooms for 24 hour staff & security including showers and workout rooms. The makers of fallout like stairs and showing broken floors etc, it makes it more visually interesting, The underground facilities I've seen are extremely well built and can withstand a near hit from a medium nuclear blast. As for the ongoing work, virtually every place I've been in has had some type of ongoing work to fix/improve/update something. That sort of maintenance never ends. I am not sure how the military operates in the UK but from with I've heard it is a much smaller scale but much the same.

      Thanks for the in depth info. I was just surprised that the medical staff was not larger

      Just from comparing the location in the game to what I've seen in the real world, the medical facility is about right, although the architecture is nonsensical - it makes for fun game play, up down, narrow halls, etc, but it does not work in the real world.

    Looks like they were still working on the HVAC system and was not yet cut off from the outside or upper floors. That would explain how the people on the lower levels died.

    @Paperboy-1937 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Thenthapple
    The machines that you wanted to know what they are at 5:45 are Microfilm Viewers
    They were very common use (not nowadays) for military and government facilities for mass record storage
    So places like library of congress and the national archives still use them because most of the ww2, 50s, and 60, records were produced in microfilm format have not been thoroughly digitized

    My explanation for why there are so many dead near vents is that the blast sent energy or a huge gust of wind through the shafts, knocking many of them over and breaking their necks.

    Hey Apple, you know that roach anomly storm i told you about? Turns it occurs everywhere in the game, also if you go to Markers Marina. I experienced a Barrel water movement when i was swimming, however at first i thought " Wait a min, it could've been just me swimming but this had been going for more than 20 mins and kept going up and down so their's definitely something in the water. However though i found some the places you discovered in the game, I can't get into the church so i dk where the key so my posting me a video link to your witchcraft church, also I found the crazy ass ayslum where the mercenaries are, and last but not least. How the hell did i suddenly become an enemy of the atom? Is the atom a Enemy of the brotherhood of steel?

    People have already said this but yeah the vents were likely faulty and some sort of toxic air or radiation was trapped in the fort, but its surprising empty its not like the Chinese were in Boston. Also you'd think they would put in better flooring.
