    These tips are amazing and so helpful!!! Especially the tip about composting weeds and walnut tree fruit/nuts because that's what I have in the middie of my back yard. Composting raw seeds makes so much sense but I'm a novice gardener so I just didn't think of that. I'll definitely be burning some weeds and big pieces of wood and just adding the ash to my garden or compost.

    I haven't finished the video, but I have a few questions before I forget them. 1. I've composted for a year in a small tumbler and learned how to make a nice rich compost. A week and a half ago I was ready to make a real compost pile (actually 3 ) using free pallets. With the use of a compost thermometer to monitor temperature, I have easily been able to maintain 140+ degrees. I had to turn the pile since I needed to add pine shavings from the chicken coop and after 24 hours the temperature was back above 140 degrees. This temperature for a couple of weeks should kill seed. 2. Did you put the gum mulch directly on your garden or did you compost the chips first with a carbon source? I've read that the wood itself will not/cannot harm plants, but rather the allleopathic and that could have been what disrupted your plant growth.

      Hi Heather, number 1 doesn't seem to be a question? But yay for making good compost! I put the gum mulch directly on the garden as a mulch. Wood chips are a carbon source, so you would need to add nitrogen if you were to compost it. Its not so much that it was wood but there is something in gum particularly that kills plants, walnut does something similar.

    Your the first I hear say lawn clippings are not good...Why?

    • @FantailValleyHomestead
      @FantailValleyHomestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In a big chunk they will go putrid, if you spray the lawn with weed and feed it can hurt your compost. If you layer it well with lots of loose carbon and don't spray your lawn then you should be OK!

    I'm commenting on here to help you out with your TH-cam channel but I'm also trying to clarify this for everyone else out more this lady is not one to really be listening to you can put anything in a compost you can check ph levels before you use it and add to it to adjust for the desired levels it's dirt not rocket science but also remember to use plenty of grass in your compost just to make sure your temperature gets high enough to destroy seeds of any unwanted plants I remember it takes a little work so turn your dirt.

      You can put most organic materials in a well balanced compost in small volumes, and if you watched the video you would find that that is what I say. For people new to composting, knowing what items throw out the balance is actually helpful.
