    A quick story about the mobile charger: My wife and I just got back from a trip to a remote part of SE Oregon where we stayed for several days. Since the supercharger was 99 miles away from our destination, I made sure to charge up to 250 miles of range so I would have enough to get to our destination and then back to the supercharger. When I reached the destination, I had 143 miles of range left...plenty to get me back to the supercharger. Problem was, it was about 30 degrees there each night, and when I checked the app on day 3 , it showed only 108 miles of range! That would be cutting it too close, especially considering we weren't scheduled to leave for another day. Fortunately, there was an RV park a couple of miles away that let me plug in to their 30A RV outlet WITH MY MOBILE CHARGER!!! They charged me $15 to charge the car to full (cheaper than the supercharger) and I left it plugged in until the next day so it stayed charged up overnight. If I hadn't had the mobile charger, we would have had to have the car towed to a charger at an huge cost. Not to mention, I charge my Y at home with the mobile charger and a dryer outlet. If you have an EV you need a mobile charger...period. It should come with the car.

      Hey, there are also people who would probably never need the Adapter, so supplying it Automatically could be a little wasteful as opposed to being a reasonably priced optional extra … I don’t think that they should be expensive but being standard kit for a vehicle that didn’t need one is wasteful. A bit like full size spare tyres for cars always in the City and easily served by mobile Automobile services …

      This is a perfect example of why having the UMC included with the car is important. You may not realize you need it until you need it. When you realized you needed an alternative charging option out in the boonies, Musk's promise to reduce the UMC cost to $200 would not be worth anything when you find yourself in a bind. Good job that it was in your car. Thanks for sharing.

    I live in CA, and have Tesla insurance. About three weeks ago, I turned on the Safety Score beta to see what it was about. I found it to be too vague as far as feed back and too sensitive in some situations. So I turned it off yesterday (score of 93).
    Vague: I got dinged now and then for following at an “unsafe” distance, but never was given any idea what the car determines as “safe.”
    Also, on occasion, I’d get dinged for near collision. They were not near collisions. Both times, the car in front was making a right turn. I’d take my foot off the accelerator, engaging my regen, while monitoring the car’s progress with completing its turn. The car in front was well out of the way when the alarm was sounded. In neither case did I need to apply my brakes - regen was more than enough.
    And I got dinged a couple times for “hard braking,” which I have no idea what caused that to get flagged. I rarely use my brakes, and never use them aggressively. (Actually, I am guessing at the what caused every red flag I got - there’s no indication at the time of the occurrence that I’ve violated the safety parameters.)
    I am all in favor of using driving data to establish insurance rates and have no doubt I’d see a reduction in my rates (currently ~$150/mo). But this Safety Score has a long way to go before I’d want to rely on it being the determining factor.
    The suggestions Tesla has for improving the scores are vague and too general. The braking one discusses g-forces (umm, I am not an astronaut and unfamiliar with what 0.4 G feels like!).
    Why not give instant feed back to the driver so they can adapt their driving right then and there? “You’re following too closely,” or “Easy on the brakes, cowboy!” As it is, I had to wait until I got home to connect to my Wi-Fi to get feedback. Too little, too late in my judgement. It seems to have the white knuckle factor turned all the way up to “Granny” level.
    I’ll try it again later to see if it improves, but in my experience, Safety Score, like FSD, is not ready for prime time.

    • @fr9714
      @fr9714 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I did this with Progressive when I had a Model X. I was driving down my own dead end street at about 16mph when a woman came out from behind a van into the street. I jammed on the breaks and was able to stop in time. I got dinged for "hard breaking." At the end of the trial, I saved $3 on my 6 mo policy. Not worth it.

    • @ezpoppy55
      @ezpoppy55 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fr9714 I understand. I didn’t order FSD either. I don’t have a problem with the concept, and I do use Auto Pilot sometimes and find it useful. But I totally agree with you - the car I have is pretty enjoyable to drive! Zoom! Zoom!

    • @ezpoppy55
      @ezpoppy55 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kevincourcey813 There is a cul de sac I turn around in every day after I drop my son off at his grandparents. He gets out, and then at 5-7 mph, I make a U turn. Several times, all sorts of alarms sound off, the steering wheel shakes, and the car tells me I need to take control immediately! (Which demonstrates that immediate situational feedback to the driver is feasible.) It’s a rare event, happens around 2% of the times I make exactly the same turn. I have no idea at all what causes it, but it certainly gets my attention! It’s like 7:30 AM, and there’s absolutely no other traffic at that time. But I can imagine it would have a negative impact on my insurance rates the way Safety Score beta is set up.
      It’s too one-dimensional, and like I said, too vague, not transparent, and far too sensitive for me to use it as it is.

  • @erickessler6094
    @erickessler6094 2 ปีที่แล้ว +36

    Great report Ryan!
    I'm concerned Tesla data about mobile power kits may be mistakenly erroneous data. I suspect many people like me own two mobile kits, 1 for regular home use with NEMA 14-50 and a 2nd that sits in the Frunk and is rarely use except on trips.... thus up to 50% usage data for such owners like me is a poor representation of actual usage and reasoning for the choice of a 2nd kit.
    The data analysis must specifically eliminate the 2nd mobile kit for anyone who owns 2 mobile kits and only a single car.
    Tesla should update analysis and reinstate providing the mobile charger kits.
    I use the mobile kit because it only cost me $200 to install the NEMA 14-50 Outlet in my garage, plus the moble it offers flexibility that the 60amp hard mounted Tesla charger not.

    It is a question of WHEN You will need to use it. You NEED the mobile charger when you have no other option to charge.
    You can fix a flat or call for a tow if it is too serious. That tow is to many tire places and you can be on the road in no time. Everyone should have a mobile charger and some adapters. You could become stranded without it.

As you are aware the price is considerably higher on new orders and many of us that have not received our cars are now thinking we are purposely being put to the back of the line with zero chances of ever taking delivery due to the massive loss on revenue based on the new vehicle prices. There is even chatter of possible class action lawsuit to address the delivery issue. I would love to watch you do a piece that address the issue.

    Ordered the wall charger right as the new ones were coming out. In fact mine had just arrived when the new chargers showed up on the web site. I also bought it over a year before I pulled the lever on buying my model 3, I knew I would be buying one just not exactly when. Still even with my installed wall charger when I go on vacation or have a lot of driving to do its nice to know that in a pinch I have a charger with me, just in case. I have used it on trips to the beach to charge at some friends house. A 120v outlet is really slow and thats all it comes with so as soon as I got back I ordered the 240V dryer plug , its come in handy a few times. I was in disbelief that it only came with a 120v plug when I first opened it , seems at the very least a 240v dryer plug should also be included.

    The mobile charger is vital for peace of mind. If you are going any distance having the security blanket of the mobile charger is so comforting and useful. It also helps with initial purchase. It also is needed if the wall charger is not available when the car is delivered... or if you don't have an electrician available to install it. I had to use the mobile charger for two months before I could get the Wall charger working. A very cheap and tight assed decision.
