There's this one I accidentally did as a kid, where if you drop your game cartridge down a sewer grate, you'll be unable to get it back, so you're just stuck wherever you were when you last saved the game.

8:58, There is one way out of that softlock if you have no escape ropes or Pokémon with Dig, you can run up and down in that corner until you get a wild encounter since that can still happen, and then you purposely lose to it, causing you to white out and then be teleported to the last Pokémon Center you visted (or your house if you decided to never go to a Pokémon center that far into the game for some reason...)

@DrUnK eNgİnEeR I know a way to make it even worse : fully heal your team and then put on a Max Repel before getting in to the trap and also make sure your team has a really high defensive stats and really high level

So I was recently trying a randomized nuzlocke for Emerald, as you know, Birch needs you to pick a starter then beat the Zigzagoon, my problem was the starter I got was Gastly, haha I wasn't even thinking about type match ups, I just wanted to use gasltly as my starter, (also I was sure Zigzagoon was going to be randomized once the battle started... nope lol)
So as you can imagine, Gastly couldn't lick Zigzagoon, and it couldn't touch gastly (because he's a ball of ghost gas) and Birch wouldn't let me escape because he needed the 10 year old to beat the Zigzagoon for him... so yeah, Nuzlocke was over before it began haha

@@Altanis1 That may have worked, but I always figured an attacking move that had no effect wouldn't use PP because it didn't connect, but i guess if a move misses it used PP still, so yeah, you're probably right!

well in gen 2 and 4 rock smash is an HM not a TM so you cant toss it

There's one in gen 1 when you only have a Primape that knows rage when you go into the elite 4. If you save inside Lorelei's chamber it will soft lock since Dewgong will only use rest due to the pokemon being a fighting type, resulting in it always restoring the health that it lost to your rage user.
Yeah I was expecting this one on the list as it was another one they patched for Yellow.
fun fact: you can actually escape the softlock because gen 1 had the 1/256 glitch where 100% accuracy moves had a 1/256 chance of missing (assuming no accuracy lowering or evasion increasing moves were used), you would be able to escape if you miss every single time you used Rage until you had 0 pp
@@trevorragan3572 Wouldn't the dewgong just run out of pp on rest though or is that not a thing in gen one, also couldn't you just teach your primape TMs or HMs and be able to fight normally, so it's not really a softlock at least I don't think

6:28 I got soft locked in that spot when i was a kid. I think you have to battle the trainer offscreen from the area of the pokeball. If the game doesn't see him anymore when you go inside that area and you save, he'll spawn back there. Im pretty sure this is correct
You just go behind him then save then leave the area like using teleport then restart
When he battles you, he needs to go as far down as he possibly can, so you first need to defeat the hiker at the bottom. Beem there, done that as a kid.

3:18 This boat is amazing; it conveys a lot of softlocks. After the Dewfon part in the middle, it sounds like you have no chance of getting the second badge, but then the game quickly recovers and you feel full of hope again. It keeps alternating between a softlock and progress. Finally, everything goes downhill when the last save state is loaded.
About the Chuggaaconroy entry with those people in the cave:
The people move according to when you press B. Every time you press B their direction and movement will change. This is also the case for the psychic trainers in Celestial Tower.
I mean to not be soft locked anymore you could just battle Pokemon until you began to use struggle and kill all your Pokemon and get transferred back to a Pokemon centre

Pressing B doesn't move trainers, most it does is make them turn (only in the pokemon tower, can't remember it's name)
Info for that puzzle league softlock: My friend and I have actually encountered it multiple times! We've managed to do this quite often, my theory is that either the game can't handle the fast block switching of two "elite" players (we've only ever played it against each other, far as I know, and it has happened near the start of a match before) or you rack up such a high chain combo that the game breaks (as the multiplier does go to x??). This theory would explain why we've usually had this happen in 3D mode, as chains and combos are ridiculously easy to do.
Oh and the reason I say it isnt that rare is because we've been able to do this 3 times in a single afternoon.
6:20 if you're playing on emulator, the reset button will keep the current "game state" which was saved in SRAM, and it doesn't reset the trainer's position. To reset him to his original position, you'll have to do a proper reset such as SR (A+B+Sel+Sta). On GameBoy however, it works perfectly (both SR and hardware reset - off and on) and will softlock you.

my favorite soft lock is one you do to yourself. in gen 3 you can place down spinning tiles in your base. you would need 4 tiles that linked to each other and you would be trapped spinning forever.

There's also the Wobbuffet mirror match between when they received Shadow Tag and when they changed Shadow Tag to not affect other Shadow Tag Pokemon. Leftovers restoring more HP than Struggle could damage or take away meant two players would be at a standstill.

There's an easy way to get out of that scenario.
Just keep running around in your little space so you get a random encounter and use a move on it.
Rinse and repeat until your Pokemon's pp runs out and is left with Struggle and keep using it til that Pokemon faints from recoil damage.
Rinse and repeat until your entire team is down for the count and you'll automatically end up at a Pokemon Center.
So, not a softlock since it DOES have a way to escape it

And the vs seeker doesn't exist in most games so you're perpetually underleveled to the point that your pokemon won't stand a chance against the E4

The funny thing about number 4 is that I've noticed in later games, the game almost kind rewards you for evolving your pokemon early, though in a funny manner. I remember I once played a Pokemon Pearl Randomizer Nuzlocke, just for fun, and my starter ended up being a Swinub, because Randomized, but when I got to Prof. Rowan he said something along the lines of "Oh my, you've already evolved your starter, impressive" even though my Swinub hadn't actually evolved, so I think the games checks if the pokemon you got as a starter isn't one of the three starters, like if you evolved it so it's technically another pokemon now, to display that text XD

A soflocke that I accidentally did was I was on Cinabar island released my fly and surf Pokémon for some reason than I noticed I didn’t have a fishing rod or other Pokémon that learns surf or fly

B doesn't move any NPCs. In Celestic tower, they can turn when you press B, but never do they move
On Chuck's island in the second gene, there is actually a trainer near Chuck's gym that gives you a pokemon that knows surf, but only offers it if you meet the requirements.
I thought there was only in the remakes, and the Pokémon didn’t know surf. It was able to learn the surf HM which is required to reach Cianwood City. It’s cool if it’s in the originals as well. It knowing surf would make sense too because you can get to Cianwood City without the HM for surf.

@@seththompson3649 It could be in the original too. I could see it knowing surf when obtained in the original. It’s to make sure you’re not soft locked. It didn’t need to know surf in Heartgold/Soulsilver because you’ll have HM03. You might not necessarily have it in Gold/Silver if you trade with a friend for a Pokémon with surf.

What about saving, then changing the area, so they reload to their original positions, and then restarting the game?
Tried. Didn't work. The position is probably included in the savefile. I think i may do some digging around to see if there are some other place with similar trainer positions with more space to move.
In the crystal version after getting the egg, you can sell it to the market and you can't go further without completing that quest.
Route 25 is definitely a legit softlock. Happened to me when I was a kid and I was waiting for it to pop up on your video. It might be game specifc like maybe just RED/BLUE or YELLOW. I had BLUE and YELLOW as a kid so I'm not sure which one it was.

@@jackdevaney2393 It's pretty complicated and you most likely won't get this one on accident. Essentially Sootopolis is cut off from the rest of the world and there is a section of land the poke center is on. You basically have to trash all of your items and money. Release any pokemon that can surf, dive or fly and then use teleport or an escape rope to strand yourself on the island in sootopolis.

@@TheRedRobin96 wait, how does that happen though? You need a Pokémon to know surf & dive to reach Sootopolis. And in gen III it is impossible to release your only Pokémon that knows surf & dive.
@@obi_wanshinobi I don't remember the details exactly. It is true that you need surf and dive to get there the first time, but after that you can just fly there. By using the move deleter (which can remove HMs) you can then release any pokemon. Then you will need a pokemon that can learn teleport and one that can learn fly. Xatu can learn both so they are preferable. You are then going to fly to the Sootopolis pokecenter and step inside. And then fly to the town with the move deleter (don't step inside the pokecenter) and have him delete fly, then use teleport to warp back to Sootopolis. After you will delete all but one pokemon that can't learn fly or surf (or give them four other HMs for good measure if possible). After that you will trash every item in your inventory. This will make it impossible (or at least very difficult) to catch a new Pokemon.
Hi Dobbs, with the Pokemon Puzzle League softlock, I've had it happen to me, and I'm almost certain that it happens when both you and your opponent hit a GIANT combo on each other at the same time, it actually breaks the game.
Oddly enough I have tried to evolve my starter before delivering oaks parcel, but I end up getting bored and just moving on before that actually happens. Good to know it lead to a softlock

Number 13 was the first softlock I ever had. And at first I didn’t realize I was stuck there for eternity, so it was really frustrating to have to delete that save after putting so much time into my team.
You guys remember that burglar in the Pokemon Mansion in the Gen 1 games? When you beat him sometimes you could get trapped.

Not possible in gen 1. Struggle in gen 1 is a normal type move, making it also not affect ghosts.

With the Wellspring Cave "Softlock" couldn't you just run around and get an encounter, and then faint your mons.
It could take a lot of encounters to manage, but eventually, yes. Most of these have fixes though

For further info on Gen 1 Glitch City, it's only a game ending softlock if you save your game and have no ways to leave that map. Flying away or teleporting will fix it without even needing to reset the game though.

For #13 there might be a possible escape route. For this, all you need to do is have someone trade you a Pokemon that knows Surf (unless Pokemon that have HM moves can't be traded in gen 3, that is)

@@ChildrenOfGielinor Gen 3 requires 2 pokemon to trade so there's even a way to lock that off. Restrict all HM teaching to two pokemon, leave those pokemon in the daycare (pretty sure you have access to it by now) ,release all other pokemon but one. If you are locked off from the daycare, you can no longer trade. The daycare step is nessecary because gen 3 prevents you from releasing the last pokemon you have that knows a certain HM, specifically to avoid this type of situation. You are trapped (assuming you have no pokeballs and/or money). Pikasprey executed a similar trap at Mossdeep City (inescapable unless you have access to payday or metronome, and those escapes require HM Surf so it may be truly inescapable).

This brings me back to the days where id try and glitch out of the map in Gen 4 to get Darkrai
On HGSS my friend and I did some weird trading exploit where you change your ds internet settings and go to the gts. The game would then put a random Pokemon into your PC. It was a lot of fun, and my friend actually got a shiny moltres out of it which was sweet.
Anyway, one time I did the exploit with an empty space in my party. For some reason that messed up the game and I got a level 300 something elekid. I couldn't use it in battle or the game would crash, so I was just going to put it in the pc and go on my way. The issue was, I couldn't put it in a box because it had seals on it(used for cool effects when the Pokemon is released for those who never played gen 4). Whenever I tried removing the seals the game crashed, so I had a permanent dead space in my party.
Sadly the gts no longer works so I can't reproduce the glitch.
I think you can still do it, look it up on Google, there is a setting you can change but you need to have a certain Wi-Fi connection for it to work
I somehow managed to softlock pokemon Moon,
So I was on the second island & I was ignoring all the pokemon centers & getting cocky, so when I died my team fainted I ended up on the 1st island & had to leave & come back to the game, because I didnt have charizard glide yet

The Gen 3 Softlocks can easily be fixed if you get yourself an Event Pokemon as they get added to your party, and then trade something from another game. Like the Colosseum Bonus Disc for example.

I learned number 4 the hard way when I played through my Japanese copy of Red. I like to evolve my starter as soon as I get it in Red version and it’s not an issue in the American games, but it really got me good the the Japanese versions.
Take a drink every time Dobbs says "softlockt" instead of "softlock"

i remember back when playing white 2, there was a puzzle RIGHT before victory road that you needed strength to complete but you could get softlocked if you didnt have a pokemom with fly, teleport, or surf because to get in the area, you needed cut and strength to actually do it, but if you messed up you could surf out. i got softlocked myself because i didnt have a surf/flyer on my team and no one knew teleport and since its an overworld puzzle, escape ropes and dig dont work. plus there was a corner of ledges that prevented you from backtracking your steps
6:48 you may have to do this in the japanese versions of the game. they had a lot more glitches in them
