My son's freshman year he started opening day against one of the best teams in the state. It wasn't live but I did setup a camcorder in center field. It was a 20x optical zoom (I probaby used less than that) and I still wasn't satisfied with the quality. Even at 1080p. But its been a dream of mine ever since. Here's what it looked like.

I’m still researching the right 30x camera. It has to be able to handle the sun. If i could find one with EIS that would be awesome.
Looked good. I'm trying to figure out what camera to buy. Which camera did you use? What about recording at 4K? Would that be better? Would the view be better more behind the second base in centerfield? Is 20X enough?
This video was very helpful. I would really like to see more of your setup for the ptz camera. I was wondering how a ptz camera would perform in this setup. Do you see any lag with the video?
When I get it dialed in I’ll do a feature. The video is sync’d well in Multicam. I use a higher latency setting in the app to give some leeway tho.
My production uses 4 PTZ cameras. (Home, Center Field and 1st & 3rd base)
It helps out when you do not have a crew to man cameras. The biggest struggle is finding the best way to follow the action cleanly. But also not having wide angle shots for every little thing.
Any recommendations for presets that you think would work best? Thanks!
The one game this season I was able to use PTZ in the infield I simply set up a preset for each position 1-9. If the ball went this way I’d switch to the ptz (from the backstop cam) while pressing the corresponding preset. Have to make sure your pan speed is fast enough.
See I’m thinking about using iPhones for my setup and connecting them to OBS. A PTZ camera seems too expensive for what you get
If I weren’t determined to get that outfield shot I wouldn’t be investing in it either. iPhones will be a good setup. Keep them shaded or plugged into a power bank to help with overheating.
I definitely agree that the outfield shot is important. Your channel has been a great resource for my broadcast so thank you for that too!
Keep pushing the possibilities. What mic/audio did you use when you were talking to us from 1st base. Got good clarity.
I admit I geek out on these kind projects. I actually had my iPhone, upside down in the bib of my overalls. Running it into the Multicam software with Mevo Go.
I’m not giving up… getting ready to test my setup.
Fantastic! Let us know how it goes.
We have found that some of the PTZ 30x cameras look more like digital zoom when you get past the 20x view so be careful what you buy
Excellent advice. Do you know if there is a way to test its actual optical capabilities?
I don't think so, you just have to trust the manufacturer but I'm thinking that the cameras with the smaller sensors are likely the ones to have issues at 30x so we won't do any 30x units until we figure that part out
I'm testing my setup tomorrow with the exact same PTZ camera and router setup. Softball field instead of baseball. Glad you mentioned the sun. I will need to play with settings.
I had to run the shutter to its highest setting to get it from being washed out. Would love to see how it works on your softball field!
In case others want to see the same setup on a softball field…here is a link to my practice setup.
th-cam.com/users/live_dnN5qv6Kzo?feature=share. First half of the video is us setting up and trying things out. Very happy with it. Just need to find a way to take the wobble from the wind out. I do think you need a 30x zoom for baseball.
@@sbjohnso just a thought; try one of those driveway basketball hoops. find a cheap used one or one that someone is giving away. take the backboard and associated hardware off. mount your ptz bracket to it and the wind should have it's hands full trying to wobble it now. access to a water hose to fill the base enough to make it stable is helpful. the setup is also fairly easy to assemble and reassemble. I've used this in a different scenario for a proof of concept (wiral lite cable cam)
@@sbjohnso Great video. I am trying to help our HS baseball team with some cameras. Do you mind sharing what cameras you are using for the other shots? Thanks.
It is possible to add an ND filter to a PTZ. I did it with an SMTAV PTZ. You do have to be careful not to put too much weight on though.
What about getting a 10X-15X optical zoom camcorder with HDMI out put it on a 90" tripod and use a transmitter and receiver to pick of the signal at home plate?
I know of folks who use the wireless HDMI transmitters like this but I've not had any luck out of the Hollyland I have.
What about a magnet mount to scoreboard in outfield
Would be great if you have a centerfield scoreboard. Ours is right field and would not give the shot I’m hoping for. But will be a good compromise if I can’t get it to be still.
Thank you for testing and sharing your info!
You know research is my fav!
