- Alexander Scriabin (1872 - 1915), 2 Nocturnes, Op.5 (1890)
Performed by Gordon Fergus-Thompson
00:00 - No. 1 Andante in F-sharp minor
03:17 - No. 2 Allegretto in A major
Considering Scriabin’s long-standing ‘love affair’ with Chopin’s music, it is surprising that he should have written so few nocturnes. Indeed, the Two Nocturnes Op 5, written in 1890, have only the faintest suggestion of reflective ‘night music’ and could as easily have been titled ‘impromptus’ or ‘poems’. Both pieces display an increased sensuousness and rhythmic freedom together with a more confident and daring use of harmony. Scriabin would write only one other nocturne, the second of his Two Pieces for Left Hand Op 9 (his later Poème-nocturne Op 61 being far more ‘poème’ than ‘nocturne’).
Scriabin did write some of the prettiest, sweetest music after Chopin. Those who know his music are members of a dedicated and loyal fan club. I carry my membership card with me at all times!
Me too.
I love playing his Two Poèmes op. 32. The first one is one of the warmest pieces I've ever heard. The second one is a bit hard to manage as a pianist, I'm not a concertist so I think I have to study it a bit more carefully.

I might even say that Scriabin is the better Chopin.
@@oritdrimer4354 That is not for us poor mortals to decide.
God... I love how scriabin plays with triplets and quartes... I LOOOOVVVE IT
Such an underrated composer!
I think that if he had toured the US like Rachmaninoff and Stravinsky did, he would not have been so "hipster" in reputation. Almost every famous 20th century "classical" composer owes their media image to their American tours.
@@bigdick3228 Scriabin had tour in USA in 1906
@@bigdick3228 truth
beethoven been real quiet since this dropped
Everything was real quiet for Beethoven.
Imagine if Beethoven write a set of nocturnes😍 I can only think of his Sonata 32 arietta, maybe the First movement of his op 27 no 2, and a few others that have that nocturne feel
Romantic, beautiful without words for this great composer
The f sharp minor has a Chopinesque ternary form, outer sections are forlorn soliloquies while the middle is an intense dialogue. I would love to play this beautiful nocturne soon, and thanks to it, I got to know and enjoy the brighter and more relaxing no.2 in A major too
Skriabin - moja miłość.
It’s interesting how the Left Hand is considerably underdeveloped here before his injury at age 20. Compared to the LH work in some of the Op. 11 preludes this score looks much simpler!
"Considering Scriabin’s long-standing ‘love affair’ with Chopin’s music, it is surprising that he should have written so few nocturnes."
And he compensated by writing 70+ preludes haha.
he did, but op. 11 ain't his only set. there's op. 13, 15, 16, 17, 22, 27, 33, 37...and so on...
Scriabin is better than Chopin!!!
@@czeynerpianistproducercomp7155 nope
@@Luca-yg5qx Yes
It's like Chopin, but more modern...and more Russian. It's so amazing in that sense. It has the clothes of Chopin...but spend a few more seconds, and you know the crazy fellow who wrote it must have been someone else, someone with an entirely new and unique musical aesthetic.
A few measures of the first nocturne in F-Sharp minor plays during the scene when Mina and Prince Vlad are in the cinematograph theater from the movie Bram Stokers Dracula.
Cool!
Didn’t know that!👍
THANK YOU!!...
They are lovely.
j'aime scriabin
Magnificent
Extraorinary!
Skrjabin is the Chopin of Russia! Marvellous!
Even on his first works, Scriabin already showed a distinguished style.
@@Molnia_therianDanke für den Hinweis!
Sounds like Scriabin
I wonder piano was this performed on? Sounds a bit too bright and dry. Böesendorfer or hamburg steinway would make these nocturnes sound absolutely magical.
Not yours, but his. He had still miles to go.

Hi everyone
If you guys are in love with nocturnes, consider to listen to these 6 nocturnes:

They are really relaxing!
These pieces are like Chopin's Nocturnes with a Russian flair. Interestingly, Taneiff regarded these pieces as "empty" as the open fifths were often too evident.
Sounds like this "Taneiff" guys was a complete moron.

Scriabin? 🤔
The first nocturne was sort of dull for Scriabin. The second was an elegant simple piece. Both arent too memorable though.
The second nocturne is beautiful and definitely memorable.
A little insulting comment.
well he was only 18 back then
Sure, they might not be the most intellectually stimulating pieces, but they are still wonderful to listen to. Consideration of the composers age (and hence maturity in life and musicality) should be taken into account when critiquing their pieces.
Number 2 is from god himself. VERY memorable
The first one is too fast
Empty interpretation.
