Thank you, Chuck! As always, thorough high quality video, and to the point. My wife found a jump starter on the marketplace that I tried to use yesterday. It has large clamps that I attached but then knocked off while removing the battery. So I lost the power. The solution you demoed is much more elegant. I sure have one of those adaptors and will attach it to ring connectors as I can’t think if I have spare alligator clamps on hands.
The booster that I got also has a power adapter for the cigarette lighter, now that my radio is reset, I may try to see if plugging it in and disconnecting the power would also work on the Vic. That’s just for my curiosity. The booster is bulky to move around, so I would rather use the method you’ve shown.

Thanks for the great question.
Instead of using alligator clamps on the little power adapter you can attach a cigarette lighter plug.
And just plug it inside the car, instead of attached to the battery terminals.
Your local Walmart should have them for $2.77.

Chuck when I was running my MATCO tools franchise when I used to be rich, young, debonaire, and handsome I would sell tons of those memory savers, the techs in a hurry would forget to retrieve 'em after completing a task, and would like to own several. They were most concerned not to purge the radio station settings, lest the owners get pizzzed and "forget" the tipping. Thanks for the reminder, I should have kept 1 for myself.

as I get older memory loss is a concern, but I can't figure out where to stick that cigarette lighter plug :P
in all seriousness though, I can see where this is great if you have to change your battery, but I don't see this as "safe" if you need to work on electrical stuff in the car. Or am I missing something?

OK, I think I understand you now.
The process described in this video is for preventing memory loss when replacing the battery, or removing the battery to gain better access to replace a component for example the battery tray because it's corroded.
If you created a short circuit with the battery removed, and the transformer hooked up you would simply blow a fuse the same way if the battery was connected.
However, the transformer in this video is rated at only 1.0Amps.
That is not enough current to cause and damage, or even blow any fuses.
The lowest rated fuse is a 5 Amp.
This is a great question though.
Should I make a follow up video and try to blow a fuse?

What do you guys do in the autobody world if you need to disconnect the battery for welding etc?

@@PanzerPlatform sadly nothing, 9 times out of 10 unless it's something minor the car is generally apart for days or weeks. One of the dealerships I worked at did have a shock absorber that clamped to the battery like a battery charger where you would not have to unhook the battery. In most cases its only an inconvenience to disconnect the battery.

That's an excellent question.
It depends if your trickle charger is a "smart" charger, or a "dumb" charger.
It will also depend on the current output of the charger.

Thanks for that tip. Was debating just buying a new adapter but with the suggestions in the vid., comments, and my own past experiences... I feel confident I can probably DIY several options with off the shelf parts/adapters etc.
Just need to spend a few minutes to locate the various parts and test it out. I've used a Jumper Pack in the past but as others have mentioned it can be bulking and prone to disconnecting so just have to locate the 12v DC Cigarette Lighter/Power Outlet Adapter and/or a few bits of wire with clips to make the connections without relying on the short jumper clamp cables to balance the pack under the hood or whatever
