I couldn't find any information as to if he actually made it. I did see a death notice for a man with the same name from Spiddal who died in 2014, not sure if it is him.
Lol I always found that weird, but think it's because the curragh is so light on the water that it doesn't need much to get it going at speed. A blade in the oar would probably be too much for the rower (and maybe too much for the boat?)
The Kerry people call them naomhog. Eddie Hutch from Feothanach built them for speed and won the Thames race for different types of rowing boats. Also read Tim Severns Brendan voyage. He became convinced it was possible after going out to sea in a naomhog or currach.
This great to see, my 2nd cousin RORY after all this time, I was the young man who was chosen to do the cooking and the washing up for several weeks but he was a hard man to keep feed, it was none stop cooking for me, for 24-hour x 74-day whilst Rory built up his strength, I hardly got any rest or sleep, Rory always looked for more freshly cooked food, he became the picture of great health, he was in his prime, thanks to my cooking and skill of steeling fresh eggs from the local farm's hen houses, I looked like someone who was on hunger strike also having to work on a chain gang. After this I made my escape with the money I made, I left Ireland and swore never to return. With the passing of time, I feel like I would like to meet up with old cousin Rory again as I have finally forgiven him for the hard long hours of cooking for him
The serious strongmen in that powerlifting and such do eat like bulls. It's raw strength and the stamina in them muscles. If they arms are able to do it then it doesn't matter how you look
I'm all in for the 'currach diet'...what a boyo this fella was...anyone know how he got on?....I can imagine some woke snowflake been offended with his chosen charity name ..hope this doesn't get cancelled👍😉
That's the traditional design for the oars used with the currach, evolved over centuries of use with these extrememly light leather-skinned boats on the rough Atlantic Ocean. Quite simply, they'd been found to suit all the purposes peculiar to that trade better than conventional oars.
Man, you bring us gold.
I'm nostalgic for a time I hardly knew.
Nostalgia isn’t what it used to be.
That ending came out of nowhere jaysus you’d be fierce cold
He lived until 2014.
What a man.
How do you know ?
His death was reported on Rip.ie
Edit. His name is Rory O'Connor from An Spidéal
What age was he do you know? He looks young enough in this video...
@@spiderslegs99 his headstone reads 1942 to 2014 so he was 37 here if my numbers are correct.
@@seanmurphy6096 72 no?
Best stuff I’ve seen through the the lockdown.
I love these old videos, times I remember well. Thank you CR 👍
Most entertaining. More power to you. X
Ahh brilliant, does anyone know if he completed it?
He's on an island with Tom Hanks ....
If he did or he didn't, he went for it and God dam I wish I had his balls.
Brilliant, hardy Connemara man!
This stuff is Pure gold
Counting in Irish his pushups lol. The end, so that's where the big yin got it from.
😄😄He did a "rake" of press ups...thats a lot.
Fuckin’ right it is. I did a heap once and it damn near killed me. A rake is a whole other matter entirely.
Promoting the place(west coast) he from so well done for that and for charity. Did they follow him rowing around Ireland?

He was a fit man god bless him😂. genuinely
Thats a beautiful boat.
I have a scale model of a curragh. I bought the kit in
sag Harbor N.Y. 50 years ago and put it together. Still looks good!
The oars are basically 2 by 4’s. Wtf.
Lol I always found that weird, but think it's because the curragh is so light on the water that it doesn't need much to get it going at speed. A blade in the oar would probably be too much for the rower (and maybe too much for the boat?)
Back in the day a 3 man currach could leave a 6 man oxford crew behind with the 2/ 4s
@@sdrtcacgnrjrc Broad bladed oars would catch the wind. Traditional currach was superb design for environment in which it was used.

What a legend
Some man for one man
Spiddal boys are tough as old boots
This lad's got some gut on him, but serious stamina! Impressed..

He was no way fit after eating half a turkey 🦃 a bit of a chancer I'd say 🤣
Fabulous video 👍
Would nt be so sure of that slim does not imply fitness, it's about stamina,

You’re right. He should’ve eaten a whole turkey.
I wonder how he went
Did he ever do it lol mad man 😂
Did he manage going around Ireland
Unfortunately only as far as the first pub
Haha what a cool guy
Anyone know if he achieved his aim?
Tv gold
These curraghs boats are seaworthy. I guess Bretons sailed to Brittany in such (bigger perhaps) boats during V and vı centuries.
Ken ar c'hentañ😊
Back in the days when men were men.
And sheep were nervous.
Now now Ur not allowed say things like that anymore 😉👍
Someone explain mathematics to Rory.
If nothing else all that food will help him to float
Paint me like one of your french oars
🌹🙏🏻♥️🥰
Worst press ups I ever witnessed
U try with 18stone and a gut full of beer and chicken
