    I was never taught how to change lanes properly, so after around 3 months of driving I figured out a rule of thumb that if you can see both headlights of a car behind you that is moving in desired lane, it is 99% of the time safe to shift in this lane (though you also should consider both your and the car's speed, the slower you are/the faster the car is, the smaller the window for shift becomes). It is essentially the same thing as stated here, 2nd quadrant, but IMO my version is more simple to memorize.
    And yes, never hurts to double-check the blind spot, especially when merging into the highway.

      I actually do this too. It's way easier and less stressful to change lanes if you have this thought in your head. I didn't learn this until my sister told me headlights after I messed up changing lanes. Did this method on the freeway one time and I felt pretty comfortable and not scared anymore.

      On a different tip, also if you see a faster car than you, let him/her pass before changing lanes. Never be in the fast lanes if you are going to drive slow or not keep up with fast lane traffic. Stay away from merging lanes and only go there when exiting. Stay away from people texting while driving.

      If adjusted properly, you can rely on mirrors pretty much most of the time, but it's still always a good rule to do a shoulder check just to make sure somebody didn't sneak into your blind spot...... Typically I like to set my mirrors where I can only see the rear quarter of the vehicle just barely in my mirror..... This ensures I know exactly where the end of my vehicle is so that when the vehicle in the next lane over is dead center, I can safely pass as they are an adequate distance behind me..... This even works when I'm towing a trailer

    I've been driving for 66 years but it never hurts to brush up on things because sometimes you get a little complacent. Also, for the last 30 years, I've been living in a very small town where the speed limit never exceeds 35. So when I go up to the big city, where traffic has probably tripled since I lived there, I do get a little apprehensive. So, I'm going to regularly brush up by watching your videos.

      city driving is intense, always plan your routes beforehand. it's the biggest pain to have to rely on a passenger to navigate, even when they are familiar with the surroundings, or have the directions right infront of them. they will never take it as seriously as the person driving. asking left, right, or forwards with a distracted navigator, especially during a time sensitive situation, will usually end you up in trouble. this, on top of the wild city traffic, is bad news. reckless speeding and lane changing without signals are unusually common. it's usually best to leave your car at a park and ride, and take public transportation into the city. tow truck drivers might extort you anyways. be safe guys.

I had a few close calls, and now I check my blinds spots often and I was told to merge slowly into the lane I intend to go to, just for extra safety.

    • @moetocafe
      @moetocafe ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@maiden5427 it's exactly like that and it's even worse, when a car enters in a blind spot of a truck. Car drivers don't realize they put themselves in danger, driving like that around heavy vehicles.
      If you ride a car - don't drive near big trucks, you don't belong there and you don't need that level of trouble.

    Keep your eyes and head moving at all times, checking your mirrors. Spot mirrors (aka blind spot mirrors) help too, they give you a wider angle to help you see what is right next to you. I install them on all my vehicles and motorcycles. On roadways, usually highways, that have 3 or more lanes traveling in one direction, the spot mirrors help me see 2 lanes over on either side of me so I can see if someone 2 lanes over is moving into the lane next to me as I may be changing lanes. Helps sometimes to turn your head and look also. My 5 rules of the road are: Speed management,space management, visual search, communication, can’t be in a big fat hurry! Oh and # 6, be courteous. Oh, and one more, never assume the other driver knows where you may be going, and vice-versa! Unless it’s a case when turn signals are indicating the intention . Don’t just focus on the car in front of you, you should also be looking about 1/4 mile ahead. Cause if the car ahead of you has to slam on his brakes, you may not react or stop in time. If your driving fast on highway, that line of sight distance is further than 1/4 mile. I’ve seen where lots of traffic on a busy highway come up on a hill, they can’t see over the hill, traffic is stopped or slowing and OH NO ! Everybody has to slam on their brakes!! Be safe.

First check rear mirror for incoming traffic, then signal and check by turning your head to your shoulder, if clear, then you're good to change lane. So its mirror signal, blind spot, then change lane. Blind spot check never fails, but check for incoming traffic as well.l

    After seeing this video, I think car manufacturers should pre-etch the quadrant lines on the side mirrors.

  • @rags2riches970
    @rags2riches970 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You should also shoulder check after checking mirrors

    • @sungleong
      @sungleong 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True. Mirrors don't tell you when a car approach from a third lane and cut to the lane next to you. It takes a bit of practice to check the third lane, most people don't do that.

    Rear view mirrors help us to find out the blind spots for changing lanes firstly then we can trust the side mirrors, cars crossing like wind 💨 🧐

    It also depends on how you adjust your side mirror, doesn't it?

    • @Fateslav
      @Fateslav 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, it depends on horizontal placement of mirrors

    • @shivamgagad5674
      @shivamgagad5674 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      According to my driving instructor, the side mirrors should be positioned enough that you can see a portion of your own vehicle and it's rear door handles, adjacent to the lane markings (i'm still kinda confused on this myself)

    • @santa55monica
      @santa55monica 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@shivamgagad5674 I never do that. But if you drive in a populated area where there might be bikes / motorcycles riding or pedestrians walking closely by your car, then it makes sense.

    I thought that those mirrors were for my best friend and I to look at our nails 🤷🏻‍♀️ You learn something new every single day. Next, you’ll tell me that blind spot monitoring doesn’t just notify drivers of blind pedestrians
