Floating Cedar Mantel...If it looks straight, it IS straight!

  • My client had a 2018 windfall cedar tree from his property milled into a 6x6" beam.
I cleaned up the rough sawn beam, fabricated a mounting bracket and installed the finished floating mantel.
    NOTE:
I first tried to use a level to locate the mounting bracket. But the brickwork was nearly 2" out of level over the six foot span!!! We abandoned the level, lined it up with the grout and had the wife give final blessing on location...when (sh)it goes haywire ALWAYS have the wife direct final placement to CYOA.
As Jimmy says, "If it looks straight, it IS straight!"

Thank you, Jon! Downdraft table is my favorite tool. Shop used to be COVERED in grinding dust. This captures 95% & everything stays clean now.

Sweet install! Perfect finish for that cedar. It really pops!

Thank you, Tom! Cedar looks incredible until it oxidizes...which it always will in time.

Thank you, Joel! Cedar is an underrated lumber type with beautiful grain character.

Hey Dustin! I run both Lenox & Starrett 18tpi blades on my HarborFreight porta band. It kicks butt. Eats right through steel, even 1/2" plate with quality sharp blades. EDIT: It's not adjustable, so I'm not sure the speed.
