- This week our travels brought us across the Straight of Juan de Fuca and over to Canada! Aboard the ferry, our van made it all the way from Washington to Vancouver Island in the beautiful British Columbia.
But like most beautiful destinations around the world, expenses are high and our pockets are...shallow. So we had to get a bit creative with our activities and sightseeing on the island. One of the most expensive and highly desired travel destinations on the island: TOFINO. Surf capital of Canada!!

Wow, wow, wow! You guys took us on an emotional journey! Starting with disappointment and a challenge… delivering us to the glory of conquering the skatepark, the undersea, and the surf. The video work, the edits, the graphics, the narration, the MUSIC!!! Such fun contrasts: South Park-ish graphics vs. Jacques Cousteau-ish video work. Dog squeaks vs. classical music. Serious reflection vs. total clowning around. You ARE master storytellers! You capture the quirky details, piece them together in a way that leads us down a curious path, adding just enough of your insights for us to sneak a peek into your minds/hearts, and deliver us to a place where we feel great about the experience we’ve lived with you guys. Then, while we’ve got the ‘warm fuzzies’ and are feeling kinda vulnerable, you help us to reflect upon the experience we’ve just shared with you. “The moral of the story is…” you conclude. We feel like better people for the 15 minutes of our lives we gave to viewing this “TH-cams”. Personal growth! Then, WTF? BEN, once again, MOONS US! Bwhaha. Playing with us. Love it. Shout out to the map and paper cutouts! They add so much to the storytelling. You both are so clever and resourceful. More money does not equal a better time. Fonder memories and colorful stories when you have to be resourceful.

I am overly impressed with all the activities you all have gear for! I'm convinced your garage is actually a tiny pocket dimension.
We can hardly open the back doors without gear falling out haha but we've been accumulating everything over a long period of time. And usually we try to find everything used because it can get pricey if you go for new!
I'm from the island and fairly familiar with Tofino but I really enjoyed watching your video and seeing what you got up to! Glad you were able to have a good time for not much money. I really liked the way you shot this, the way you told the story, and your hand drawn graphics, it was really great!

Well done guys! When I lived by a suburban beach, my dog taught me to body surf, she was amazing! But overall I’m like Julie, wary of the things in the water. One day I almost stepped on a stingray that was enjoying the warm shallows… then of course there’s the Australian sharks.. and deadly jellyfish 😳
Haha yeah it sounds like 9/10 living things in Australia can kill you. That's awesome what kind of dog was she??
@@Out.There. she was kelpie border collie x and a great dog. Even received fan cards from people😀 but while Oz has lots of dangerous creatures, I think we have less dangerous people than many other places.🤔
I'm with Julie - any type of open water freaks me out, which is unfortunate, as I love going into the water. Anytime can be a great time when you're with company you enjoy being around, so free is just as good as not-free. And you both seem to have a great time together.
Awesome adventure video! Specifically, I thoroughly enjoyed the music selections while adventuring in the water! Superb choices! Julie, I had the same trepidations my first time diving into cold, murky Pacific waters. And that was despite having lived my entire childhood on the water, snorkeling, diving, fishing, seeing sharks... There's something different about the cold water on the West Coast, at least for me. Congrats for braving it! As I found, it is worth the anxiety! There are so many amazing things to see under the water. Also, as a person who survivies on a tight budget, I very much appreciate the "cheap adventures" factor. There is a lot you can do with a little bit of money, if you call around and temper expectations. I know many people who forgo experiences because they think it will be too expensive. It really takes some "outside the box" thinking to realize you can have an amazing time without a champagne budget. And to conclude, the "butt bruise" search was the icing on the cake. 🤣🤣🤣 I can't help but think we were all just getting mooned by Ben! Side note, that was one of my teenage years rebellious activities, so maybe I'm biased. In any case, again, this was yet another excellent episode of your amazing adventures! I can't get enough!
Ben picked some new music for this video so it's nice to hear you enjoyed it! Agreed, I do really enjoy being in the water as much as it wigs me out. Murky water makes me feel claustrophobic and anxious. I live in BC, it's ridiculous expensive to do anything. You could make yourselves a couple of skim boards for future use. Inexpensive, and easy to transport. If you know someone on the island, you could park your vehicle on their land overnight. There's a lot of beauty to see there.

Haha unfortunately we didnt have room in the van to hold onto our sand boards. Sadly we parted ways with them in New Mexico. But hopefully they are making someone else's day better now
Keep an eye out for a foam wake board at the thrift shops, best $4 spent and doesn't take up much space :)

Awesome adventure guys! We have 4 kids (all adults now) and we always found free adventures because we never could afford a lot. We saved change for years and took a 2 1/2 day trip to the Shawnee Forest in Illinois. But luckily living in the Saint Louis Metro area, we always had tons of free activities. I love your encouragement for finding the off the beaten path and thrifty activities. Thanks again for being you!

What an epic camping spot!
as a local, i'm extremely surprised there was no one else there! in the 80s and 90s we'd stop there a lot on day trips and have it to ourselves, but in the past 5 years or so it's often super crowded and even sometimes totally blocked off by people camping there.
BC Superme court rules vanlifers can sleep on any public road from 7pm to 9am. Any ordinace or bylaw officer that tells you the opposite is violating your charter rights. Take them to the BC Human rightscommision and get paid by them for violating your charter rights

This is kinda ridiculous. They complain sea plane tours are too much? well no kidding. then spend the rest of the video in Ucluelet and finish in long beach? If you wanna complain about Tofino at least go to Tofino. They went to little beach in Uclulet, then they did the light house loop in Uclulet then body surfed in long beach. A vast majority of the video was not even in Tofino.

I like the video and the effort you guys put into making them but just let me correct one thing I heard. The old growth trees are actually not scattered all over island. There are realistically very few of these trees let alone forests left and they are actually actively cutting them down with the permission of our government. It’s not cool!
How much for dog skateboarding lessons?

Love the crafty storytelling and it’s great seeing you can have fun in a budget. I watch @vancityvanlife & @thecatladyvan from Canada and they always have beautiful water backdrops at there free camps and I see you got to enjoy one. We don’t have anything like that in Australia so please find more of those to enjoy for me :)

islander here and ive really come to hate tofino. its just a playground for the rich anymore, not like locals can afford to go there anymore
seconded. if i do head out that way, i'll hang out in ukee instead, the vibe is just... more local. less touristy. and cheaper!
@@jlt131 there are amazing spots on the island but unfortunately as soon as you mention it it will be ruined just like tofino so we'll leave it there
