Trying Not to Drop a Log on my Sawmill with a Log Loader Trailer

- The stakes are pretty high on this one. I may be a bit optimistic thinking that I can move 13 foot logs from my brand new log loader trailer into a shed and onto my sawmill. I"ve only ever moved about 15 or 20 logs with this log loader trailer so if I seem a bit nervous, there's good reason for that. Finding ways to move logs onto a raised sawmill like my Woodland Mills HM130max Woodlander seems like something many people including myself often try and figure out to make the process as easy as possible. I've tried a variety of methods for loading logs ranging from using my tractor loader to log bunks. Today is something brand new and I know one thing is for certain, I better be steady on those controls or I"m going to be breaking something. Let's just hope all is still standing and in one piece when I"m done. Glad you're all here to join me on today's episode!

Slow and steady wins the race when dealing with equipment.
For sure it does Ray
Great job!!! Building is still in one piece. Looks like you have a log cabin build in the near future.
Thanks Doyle!
Good morning, Sandy. Look forward to watching. Trying not to drop...
Thanks Dennis!
The new log loading trailer is awesome and looks like you're pretty good on it already, and it will only improve. Great to see you again Sandy and I will catch you on the next one.
Thanks Jeff. Great to have ya along for the tour today
Hey Sandy! Great day out at the Red Pine forest there! Nicely done getting the logs onto the mill and processed and reloaded.. Your doing great with the new toy and it will get easier with the more hours you put on it! Enjoyed my visit as always, thanks again for having us out, it’s always a pleasure :). Andrew from NB :)
Hey Andrew! Hope you're keeping well and getting outside when ya can!
I agree with Morgan about operating in open areas before experimenting with new techniques. He is also right about engaging multiple levers at the same time to make a more fluid movement. This is true for the excavator as well. A 4-way engages in all points of the compass. It just takes practice.
Thanks for checking out the video Wayne! Lots for me to learn for sure
Great content Sandy. The more you use it, the more comfortable you’ll be and you’ll get better at knowing where the center point is. I am looking forward to your next project.😊😮😊
Thanks for that!
@@sawingwithsandy hhhhhmmmmmmmmmmm……………
Nothing beats using the equipment to gain the skills. I'm not going to speculate about what you might be building, I don't like being wrong in public. But whatever it is I'll be here to see it. Another good vid. Thanks.
Thanks for that Joe! See you on the next one
Thanks for mentioning the new scale indicator. It looks like it will be much better than the old one.
That Wallenstein trailer is certainly handy. It won’t be too long before you are expertly shuffling those logs back and forth!
It's getting easier by the day! Thanks for watching Frank
Thanks for letting us know about the cut indicator, I am going to get one for my machine. Nice log trailer, I'm super jealous.
Always happy to help Adam
Thank you for the pro scale link. Free, includes shipping. Way to go Sandy and Woodland Mills.
Happy to help Michael
Well done Sandy! Particularly the rotation is much better!
Thanks I appreciate that!
Boy !! I see production Ramping Up Sandy...
Thanks.
Mike M.
Thanks Mike! Certainly helps out with the heavy lifting
HEY! You're looking fine on that machine, Sandy. You hit on a point many people don't/didn't realize... the center of the log isn't necessarily the center of balance. Taking your time is far more important than being the fastest... right up to the point where you break something. Keep up the good work..............
Hey Carl! Yeah I'm quickly realizing that going for the middle of the log isn't usually the best spot. Almost takes practice and a keen eye to spot the centre. I'm hoping with some more time on the machine I"ll get back at it
Hhhhhmmmmmmmmmhhhh
Good video and job as always. I think you did good nothing damaged and saved a lot of labor. Thanks for tip on up grade. I will enjoy log cabin build. Debarker and cutting only two sides of log gave it away. Take care be safe and well.
Yeah I figured once the sawing and debarking videos came out the secret would get out. Hoping it's a good build. Thanks for watching John
Dressing up electrical utility poles for Ontario Hydro. They have their set of rules but the money is good. Perfect sized logs to build a log house. The log loader, sawmill and de-barker is the ideal combination to set up walls, foundation and roof materials.
Yeah these tools sure are handy!
Hey thanks Sandy, I did not know about the new scale indicator and will put one on order.
Great to hear that!
Excited to see what you have in store
Thanks Scott, should be a great project
Your log loader is a thing of beauty! What a handy rig.
Thanks Frank!
Hhhhhhhmmmmmmmmhhhhhhh
Maybe you’re building a bridge…..or a wood shed. Love the new setup!!
Thanks!
Well Sandy you are doing a lot better even with the little practice that you experience so far like I said experience you got acquire and your doing a little better with finding the center of gravity keep the good work have a great day
Thank you for that!
Great job Sandy! The more you use it, the better you will become more comfortable and more productive! ✌🏼❤️🙏🏼
Thanks Mark!
Your definitely doing well at the controls of the trailer. I found mine runs a little rough until the hydraulic oil warms up. The rotator is very responsive on mine also causing it to be a little jerky.
Yeah I'm finding it gets easier for me with more and more practice. Good tip about the oil I agree works good when fully warm
Yep the new cutting gauge is free. Sent a note ands shipped immediately. Thanks for the heads up Sandy and thanks to Woodland Mills. I knew I picked the right sawmill. They are always improving their products.
That's a great to hear Scott!
How do you get this just send them a message? I didn’t see anything about it on their website and decided to come back here and read through the comments to see if anyone mentioned it. That’s going to save me some time and hassle of making one.
@@cabinman Yep I just sent a question on how I could purchase it and they responded with it's in the mail. Use the website and send them a note.

Hi Sandy! I regret that I was not able to watching this earlier. I know early traffic and comments are important, so I try to help as much as I can. Anyway, you're adapting to this new tool well. I fully expect it will be an extension of your hand before long.
No worries Terry. I appreciate your support
Nice video Sandy. Don’t know what you’re building but I’m sure it will be cool. And you didn’t wreck the building.
Was a good day all around!
As Morgan said.
Take a hour or two couple times and don’t do anything else except work the controls and just load a pile on the trailer and then move that pile off and restack
Licensed crane operator here and first thing I would do is one slow down the motor so your engine is giving enough power to lift logs and controls.
That will help with the speed.
Second is the two controls at same time just by feathering the controls on you will feel the difference and have more control and as always.
Practice is important and the only way to improve.
Your doing great.
Just a few things that can make you even better.
Soon enough you’ll be flinging your logs on and off the trailer like they are just floating around as you can and will get that good by slowing down the speed and using two controllers together.
In the summer you’ll be able to pick up a plastic pop bottle off the ground and bring it right to you.
Take your time and enjoy
Love your channel
Keep safe and warm
Really great advice! I appreciate that John! Thank you
Great job. It looks like fun. Learning in progress. I see lots of good contents so I will save mine. Your progress will tell the story. I'm enjoying the show. 👍
Thanks Del! Certainly was helpful for this job. Would've taken me a lot longer without I bet
Great job Sandy you got nice logs for your up coming project. look forward to the build. i just contacted woodland about the red coloured cut indicator take care and enjoy the rest of the week
Thanks Wallace! . Great to hear about the indicator!
I think you are going a good job learning the log trailer. As always good video, watched it twice. Hope you can keep the log trailer looks like it could be a great help down the road
Thanks Mike!
Your skill is getting better. Confidence will come with time.
Thanks I appreciate that
Well done !!
Thanks Johnny!
@@sawingwithsandy keep up the great videos . I’m enjoying watching
Love that new unit
Thanks Murray!
Nice job with the loader. One suggestion I might make is that you put the end opposite the head of your mill in first then aline the other end up with the head. That way you have less chance of hitting the head. I'm impressed with the speed at which you are learning
Thanks for that tip Robert!
Great job mate !!!!!! That will be an awesome tool in your arsenal !!!--- great back saver !!!!! Awesome brother !!!!!!- might it be an addition to the woodshed 2.0 ?
Thanks David!
Hi Sandy. I like the workflow. I really like it: Logs from twitch trail to mill bunks is 2 times. This is robbing the Time Bandits.
Hey Tom, I think this will boost efficiency for sure. Great tool to have around
Who needs a log deck. Your doing fine and I'm sure you will refine it as you go.
Thanks Geoffrey!
With nice flat sided logs like those, a fella could build a Sugar Shack pretty easily... nice work on the loader sticks sir.
Absolutely! New project coming in real soon
Sandy, it might be a good idea to cover the tires on the saw mill to keep the wooly mammoths away.😁
Those Mammoths around here sure are fierce haha
Sandy, That log mover is way cool. Your toys keep getting me in trouble. I am running the 126 woodmaster, only mistake I made was not getting the 130Max. Had to use my son's Alaskan mill to get a 31" white pine log small enough to get through the 126.
Hey Charles! The tools sure are handy to have around. I bet that 126 still does a good chunk of work. Nice saw for sure
I've found that if you throttle down to 1/2 or so, arm & claw are a little less radical & are better controlled. Takes longer & bashes up the furniture less.
I'll have to give that a try. Thanks Robert!
Hello Sandy. You did not tell us, but it looks like you have been practicing with the loader off camera. I did see a couple of guesses for the project, but my guess involves a ditch/trench. As it is, we will see the closer it gets to the build. Have good days!
Thanks! I haven't been using it too much truthfully it just so happened I got lucky today and didn't bump anything. hahah
Hello Mr. Sandy, I think You did just fine at the controls this time, and being safe and careful is not a bad thing, you worked hard to build that shed, why tear it down being a show off. the new trailer is going to be as integral to your operation as butter is to bread consumption.
Thanks Ben! I was being very careful this time around. Figured I didn't want to damage anything with that log swinging around. Looking forward to getting more practice and becoming a bit better at it
Sandy, a log deck is great but it needs to flow to the sawmill rails. Load your logs on the log bed away from sawmill rails is the way to go. I would not recommend using powered loaders near the sawmill rails....its way to easy to make a costly mistake. Love you channel.
I appreciate the advice and thanks for watching
Well Sandy, your skills are much improved, a log deck would be a nice awesome build, but I'd rather like to see a drive through she'd/carport for a fun new machine that will need to be used a lot
Thanks BJ. Yeah a log deck would also be nice. The overall layout will likely continue to change I"d imagine as I get more use of it and try out different setups. I do like the no-touch log cutting though
My mill opening is 21’. I can cut a 161/2’ log right now. I’m thinking of adding an extension so my HM126 saw head will be out of the way when loading longer logs on the mill. I built a shed similar to yours. Actually yours inspired my build.
Great to hear that Randie! Sounds like a great setup you've got
Great start for the material for your log cabin. I'm guessing that you will have your debarking tool out soon. 😆
hahah I cant hide anything
Have you considered mounting the lasers to your shed pole uprights, to keep the mill's vibrations from shaking them so much (also keep them further from harm's way)...Could still power them with the mill's battery by dropping a coiled electric cord down from the rafters...
The only issue with that is since the sawmill does move just a little bit the lasers would be out of alignment. I've found the lasers stay put pretty well so far fortunately
Sandy, you must feel like a kid at Christmas. LOL! Your setup is coming together so nicely. Must be so much fun having some great equipment to process your logs. Have fun!
Hey Gord! I sure am excited when I get to running this log loader! Reminds me of the childhood at the arcade with the little stuffed toy claw game haha
looks like you are getting that loader figured out. I find when you come to tight areas like that you second guess controls haha
Hey Kev! I'm no expert but it is sure coming around. I know you've got some good experience on the log manuvers I"d imagine but like you said I get going and next thing ya know I"m hammering into the post haha
I can see you already got smoother on the controls. Pretty soon you will be doing it blindfolded.
Thanks for that. Yeah coming right along. Feeling more confident on the machine
very nice. now if i can get my paws on about 80 such logs. i'ld be building a cabin with hopefully a few left over for a few other projects.
Hey Fred! Yeah I'll certainly have a few logs needed for this project as well. Sure does make for some nice building material these straight logs without big branches
Nice job. If you can throttle down the engine on the Log Loader, it will slow down the hydraulics. You might find that helpful when work in tight spots.
Your skills are sure improving quickly. Soon you won't even think about which lever to pull.
Thanks for that Mike. I"ll give that a try!
Maybe you will build a bridge to cross the creek. Log cabin you need alot more logs. Great machine its making you faster to get the logs processed.
That's on the to do list for sure
What a pro you're becoming with that log trailer. Loading those logs in and out of the sawmill was like threading a needle. You may have to rename your channel SEWing with Sandy. Ha !
Thanks Dora! hahah althoughI can sew pretty good I certainly am better at sawing
So you're safe from renaming the channel 😅
Howdy Sandy- you’ll get the hang of your loader and be moving logs like an old pro soon. As far as picking up the log at center point of the weight is certainly best especially when you have someone helping with hooking skidding dogs. Actually, you get pretty good at guessing where the center is weight wise. I have an idea what the logs are for but I’ll keep my mouth shut because I’m prone to be wrong sometimes lol. Take care and God bless
I just need to guess a bit better with experience I"m thinking. Bit more control time and I"ll be better. Your idea for the logs is probably right. Hope to see ya on the next one!
I thought you did pretty well considering the loader is still new to you, but the more you use it the more comfortable and efficient you will get with the controls.
Thanks Wallace. I think like you said with some more practice things will smooth out for me
Good job. Looks like building a log cabin may be in your future. 😀
My secret isn't so secret haha
@@sawingwithsandy I am glad you are moving closer and closer to less log handling and thus saving wear and tear on your body.
Hi Sandy! I'm guessing that these two sided logs are for a log cabin "Sugar Shack" for your Maple Syrup production! If not - perhaps a thought for you - it would look great in form and function. By the way - going to the 130Max sure looks a lot easier on the back! Love the channel. Regards Dennis
Great to hear you're enjoying the videos Dennis!
Old saying practice makes perfect. It is hard to be smooth, slower start an stops on controls may help. I worked a knuckle picker, took lots of using it.
Yeah I'm thinking with some practice things will be even smoother in the future . Bet you got the hang of things real well though after some time with the Knuckle picker
Looks like the start of a log cabin/structure
I'm not good at hiding projects haha
A tail light protector may help with the laser bump
Great job
That's a great point G M! Thank you
My new indicator for my scale is on the way, the log loader worked well. Could you have cut two logs at a time for what you were doing. Also I notice you took the curtains down.
Great to hear that Brian! I did take the curtains down recently just because they were getting wasp nests in them
Hi Sandy!!😀😀
Your doing well with the new log loader. Won't be long and it will be just one fluid motion.
Are you guys going to get a bunch of snow from the monster storm that is coming through Wisconsin now??
Take care my friend!! TTYL!!😀😀
Logger Al
Hey Al! Sounds like a big snow storm is coming in. I"m about ready to get the snowblower all hooked up now!
@@sawingwithsandy we are supposed to get around 12 to 15 inches. I'm not looking forward to it. LOL!!
Haha I hear ya!
If it's what I'm thinking it's for I would of made them 3 sided logs and chanfed the inside edge for appearance...I would then dato out the top and bottom cut 1 inch wide 1/2 inch deep and put a 1by1 in them for like a tong and grove... either way looking forward to the build
That would certainly make for a nice look
using the loader traler great idea
Thanks Rodney. Worked out pretty well
Hand-eye and muscle memory will come with use careful is the word.
Being careful is key for sure Ralph
Now we know what the debarker is going to be used for
for sure Jeff.
Hi Sandy. Been watching your channel for a couple years now and like your videos. I was wondering if you had the link to get new scale indicator.
Hi Richard, unfortunately I couldn't locate the link so I think people may need to contact Woodland Mills directly to get one.
Thanks for all the support over the years!
I was looking for the link as well. Great video, risky and I was on edge a bit but you did a great job.
Wondering if you still like the power head?
Still really likely the power head
Hey sandy I would like to say congratulations on that machine for some one that hasn't ran one before you did a great job. I used to operate one years ago when I worked in logging it takes time. Yea I could guess what your next project is lol iam not going to say. Hey I have a question to make it easier on you could you reverse your log stops so you don't half to lean over the mill so that the log is closer to you or maybe you can't I thought I would ask but any how your doing a great job.Dave
Thanks for the words of encouragement Dave! The feel of the machine is coming along so hoping it gets smoother with time. The main reason I like the log stops on the opposite side is that is the direction the blade turns so it pushes the log against the log stops when cutting
Looks like your log trailer might just be your new log deck, seems easier on you to load and unload your logs
Sure is handy to have around that's for sure Gary
Will throttling back the trailer engine slow the flow ? Thus calming the jerks
I'm not too sure if it would but likely I'd guess. I'm probably just needing more practice
Pretty obvious with those dimensions, you're building a dual port log outhouse💩😜 Great video Sandy, I appreciate the high level filming and editing 👌
Hey Andrew! That would be something to be hold that's for sure haha. I appreciate the well wishes about the camera work
MM77 Approved 👍🏼👍🏼
Always happy to have the support! Thanks for that
New equipment works well. Long time viewer of the channel. I am not a big fan of the guessing game, prefer you tell us what the project is so we can follow along from day one and imagine the steps.
Great to hear from you and thanks for your long-term support. I'll be revealing the project really soon.
always wanted to build a log cabin... :P
I like that guess!
Always love your videos! I was wondering, do you use all your lumber yourself or do you sell it? If you sell it, who do you sell it to?
Great question. I do use all the lumber I make myself
Sandy do you have the link on how to receive the level indicator you were showing on your mill. It looks like it would be handy to have.
Hey Roger, I think I've got the most updated link in this video description. Hope that helps ya. Thanks for watching
I am guessing that there maybe a cabin in the thought process ?
I like that project idea!
Sandy I did notice one thing when you put the trees on the ground not good but if you would have stopped dunnage on the ground then put the logs on that you would be a lot smarter now you're is on the ground getting wet and getting dirty I understand right now everything is just a test but test 101 always says dunnage first
Hi Arnold, I just put the logs on the ground for a few minutes until I unloaded the trailer, then I put the logs back in the trailer.
Dunnage is helpful for longer=term storage for sure
I bet you're making new longer log bunks.
good job. the shed is still standing lol
hahah still standing
World's tallest back scratcher for Sasquatch? We all know he lives in your woods.
hahaha pretty much
Cutting two flats.. log cabin? Oh yeah and the new peeling tool. Log cabin it is.
hahha my secret isn't too well kept
Good Morning Sandy, A little of topic but since you mentioned your laser in this video, I got a couple of questions. I haven't found the video where you added the additional laser. Is there one? Also on the video where you added the first video you show using just the little battery box. Did you purchase apinex's dc-dc converter and if you did, do you have both laser hooked up to it?
Great questions. The playlist section on my TH-cam channel page will have a list of videos called "Sawmill Setup" and "Woodland Mills HM130max" or "Sawmill Laser". Should be some videos in there to help with that . I did use the converter from Apinex for this setup
@@sawingwithsandy Yep, before you replied I went back and found the exact one that answered ALL my questions including which mount you now prefer. Great videos!!!! Keep them coming.
Great to hear that! Thanks again for all your support on the channel
Great job! Do you have that link for the woodland mills level give away?
Hi Charles, I had a look for the link but was unable to find it. I think you may need to contact Woodland Mills directly for that indicator.
Turn down the speed on the log lift motor, the pressure is maxed out causing jerky movements. Use hire rpm when you have heavier weight logs that max out capacity only!
Thanks for the tips Dave
D-logs?? New cabin!?!? I have to know!
You're on the right track Joe!
do you think that loader could largely replace your grapple
Great question Donna. This loader is very helpful at moving logs from one place to another quickly but I also use my grapple as a root rake to dig up debris so I likely would want to keep it in that case. The log loader is nice because it allows for logs to move down a narrow trailer as opposed to logs that I have to carry across the tractor width which doesn't fit down trails easily
Would it be possible to cut two logs at once? Seems your sawmill is plenty wide enough.
Hi Tom, I've considered that but the trouble is the logs are so small that I'm really pushing some of them to get the height I need so I'd be hesitant to try and cut two in fear of cutting one too low
what is the average diameter of these logs ? Thanks great vid !
Hi Logan, the logs here are around 8" give or take
Thank you. I have quite a few 8 & 10" & have not figured out the best use for them yet.
Definitely a little bit of playing tetris game getting log into correct space lol
hahah that's for sure
A log cabin!
hahah good guess there Tom
Barn?
Good guess!
Practice
Yeah that's what's needed here for sure
Floor Beams or rafters
I like the guess Bryan!
I suspect you'll be building a log structure of some type,
Will be a great build I"m thinking!
Ooops. Wrong button. Was going to push like, butt hit the wrong one 🙂.
Thanks for coming along for the video Stig
