Interesting. Just about every movie ever made has scenes that were filmed but ultimately cut from the final release. This seems even more true with modern movies. M. Night Shyamalan's "The Last Airbender" had over 5 hours of shot footage that was cut down to less than 2 hours. The new "Godzilla vs Kong" had almost 6 hours of shot footage that was cut down to less than 2 hours. "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me" "Avengers: Endgame" & so many others have hours of unused footage.

Thank you for posting this, and proving that it exists!
But...how dumb is this ending? For one thing, it directly contradicts what Winston's torturer tells him earlier, that killing traitors has the opposite result of making martyrs. (And that conversation took place in seclusion, not out in a public place, even!)
I'm assuming this ending was the icing on the cake for Orwell's widow (who gets credit for this film being unavailable), and I don't really blame her.

Passed by the British Board of Film Censors with an "X" certificate on November 10, 1955 and then premiered at the Warner Theatre, Leicester Square, on March 1, 1956 running disappointingly for only two weeks. Interestingly, this was the first of two versions that Director Michael Anderson shot, each with an entirely different ending. The Monthly Film Bulletin reviewed the London premiere and noted that the "changed ending" shows Winston Smith shouting "Down with Big Brother", whereupon he is promptly shot by the police. Julia is shot down as she approaches his dead body. In the American version (released on DVD by Orbit Media and taken from a television print from Screen Gems), Smith does exactly the opposite and ends up shouting "Long Live Big Brother," but Julia is nowhere to be seen. Comparing the two versions, the latter was closer to Orwell's original, while the original British ending was damned by The Times as an "unforgivable mistake".

Wait there are other endings to this movie?
I am German and that is the only ending of the 1956 movie version of 1984 that I know.

@@mauzki- I understood what he meant. I was just amazed that this 1984 movie had an end in which Winston is not eliminated by the thought police.
In germany the movie is only known with the end shown in the video.
It is as if some popular movie like star wars had an entirely different end in another region.
