Hi Geoff, is my memory playing tricks with me?. I am sure Derek Gaines was a driver on the Mid Hants. I have been involved with the Mid Hants, I route conducted a Hastings unit from Guildford to Ropley many years ago, I was an acting man at the school at the time. Steve West went out and took some photos I have got somewhere of the unit 1110? between Bentley and Farnham at speed. Also, at Freightliner, we released a class 47 to work on a gala day at the Midhants, and a 57, 57011 on another Gala day all of which I have some pics somewhere. Drove a DEMU and class 57 over the route, I also use to work with Richard Bentley, I would really love to drive a class 33 again, my basic traction from being a passed man at Fratton, maybe, maybe. Kindest regards, Ian T.

      Hi Ian
Yes, I think that Derek did train some drivers on the steam at the Mid-Hants years ago; I will phone him to see if your'e right. Richard Bentley is the Operations Manager at the Mid-Hants now and I see him occasionally when I'm down that way.
He also arranged for me to drive and fire on V Class Schools 30925 'Cheltenham' with Bob 'Ben' Cartwright on the 9th July 2015 - sadly, the very day that Dave Salmon passed away.
      Best wishes
      Geoff

      Hi Ian
You'e absolutely right, I've just spoken to Derek and he and Inspector George Reynolds did do quite a bit of work at the Mid-Hants when it first started. I'm seeing him tomorrow morning and he's going to show me some photos.
      Cheers
      Geoff
