I read this book during the trans readathon. As someone who doesn't read much horror, I was a bit put off by the harshness of the book as you said but I eventually fell into it and did enjoy the novel. I also had some criticism towards it, especially as a debut novel but I couldn't stop thinking about how much I would have loved to have read this book ten years ago as a trans teenager. Like you said I look forward to more novels and possibly adult literature from White! I loved your review and how nuanced your critique was. Everything was so well said!! I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on Pet by Akwaeke Emezi.
I convinced my cis/het christian friend to read this book before I got out of chapter 3 and I fear it may end up breaking her lmao
A distinct possibility lmao 😳
