I saw something a couple of days ago, about 9pm swedish time, slightly to the south west-ish. I saw with my naked eye something that looked like a star in the black sky, staying in a fixed poisition just like any other, it wasn't a plane that moved or anything, the light was a pinprick just like other stars... but that concentrated light shone as bright as a light bulb; it was like seeing a lamp shining very very far away. I am guessing this was Venus? Like, it was exactly like a star, behaved like a star, the same size as a star.. but I have never seen a star shine that brightly ever in my life. It was so bright that it was easy to pick it out from other stars, it shone so brightly that it was as if it was the only star in the sky.
Venus is the third brightest object in the night sky.. it moves very swiftly across the sky, it does not look like a pin prick, it shines like a very bright lamp. If you have good eyesight you can see it is a disc and the phases. At the moment it is half lit. Venus appears vastly larger than any star.. Venus cannot be mistaken as a star.. look up at the sky tonight you will see Venus very bright.
Shame about Mercury not adding well to the planetary show as we'd have every planet in the Solar System. They have all been showing well but I must admit I am only missing Neptune as it's a bit of a challenge .
Indian rituals of fasting and looking up in the sky for the moon,we were astronomers to watch the basics of the planet waning and waxing. Every indian woman at home would come out to worship the rising moon.
I didn't know about this and me and my husband were out driving and were wondering why there was a super bright star next to the moon. I've never seen such a bright star. Its cool to know it's venus
BBC programmes are good quality and well-researched. Long may it continue. But this is no place for politics. It's a great time for observing the planets!
