Alaska Invasive Species Partnership collaborators, including USFWS Alaska, are working together to prepare for the invasive European Green Crab (Carcinus maenas) with a rapid response plan for the crab and other invasive species that threaten Alaska's ecosystems, economies, and cultural resources. In July 2022, invasive green crabs were found in Alaska for the first time. They are aggressive hunters, outcompeting and consuming native crab species, such as juvenile Dungeness, and dig up important eelgrass habitats, vital for juvenile fish and migrating birds. It’s no wonder they are listed on 100 of the World’s Worst Invasive Alien Species.Ultimately, the arrival of invasive green crabs in Alaska has potentially huge implications for the valuable coastline ecosystems all Alaskan's depend on, including subsistence, recreational, and commercial fisheries.
