    I returned to using CDs as my main source in April of this year. A few years ago I had sold my CD player thinking that I was always going to be using streaming services and digital files on my computer.
    I became annoyed with the streaming services changing things, replacing a favoured album with a remixed version for example. So I started buying CDs and ripping them to my Mac, then playing them with Audirvana.
    Well after a year or two of that I started reading reports that CD players sounded better for some people than streaming or playing files on the computer, so I bought my Teac VRDS 701T CD transport in April and I use that with my DAC. I am so glad I did. I think the sound I'm getting with this source is the best I have ever had in my life and I'll mentioned that I had my first Hi Fi system as a teenager in the 70s.
    Now I'm buying CDs on Discogs each week. It is such a cheap way to get music and because CDs are very robust you can buy second-hand ones and it is pretty rare that you'll have a problem.
    I think if you have a DAC already then maybe you should look at getting a CD transport.

    Very good review Terry. Yesterday experienced the 40-series at the Dutch Audio Event here in the Netherlands. In combination with Audio Physic Tempo speakers this new Cyrus set blew me away.
    By the way, I still buy and listen to CDs. I also stream (Qobuz via Roon), but my Accuphase CD player still beats my Roon server/streamer from Silent Angel (Rhein Z1) with separate PSU from SBooster. But the differences are sometimes very small …;-).

    Good review. I never abandoned CDs and it is still my preferred listening experience at home. Streaming is for the car/on the go. The relationship with streaming is different to physical media- I tend to skip and disappear down rabbit holes searching out "new" artists and music that if I like means I just have to buy a physical copy where possible. It has only supersized my spending on discs!
    Vinyl is ok once in a while but in all honesty I can't be bothered with all the faffing around and high maintenance it requires- so many tedious rituals.
    I must say throughout the video I was distracted and puzzled by the two refrigerators sitting in the room- until you pointed out they were indeed speakers...

    Really appreciated the review. I have, however, a comment for your consideration. You haven't listened to a CD player in 10 years, and not being able to compare it to other higher end brands that have come out, even in the past few years, really doesn't give the Cyrus 40 a place in space for me. There are still many audiophiles that have CD players, and are looking for possible upgrades over time. I think doing an A/B comparison would be very helpful.

    • @PursuitPerfectSystem
      @PursuitPerfectSystem  หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Yep totally agreed it would have been better to have a CD player here to a/b. I was considering buying the last one I owned a meridian but I didn’t think I would ever play CDs again after this so it’s money I could without spending as I am far from rich. But I would review other CD players now and if I can hang on to the Cyrus I will to use for that exact comparison.

      I agree with you. I couldn't see why anyone would give away their CD collection.
      10-15 years ago I saw a number of friends dumping their years of buying and collecting overnight for streaming.
      The flip side is music (or physical media) can and will cost you valuable space in storage space. On top of that there are the perks that come with streaming skipping, searching no manual loading and changing of CDs and probably the biggest benefit music on the go.
      I was the only one in my group of friends that never got rid of their CD collection.
      Strangely enough 2 of my friends have started buying second hand CDs again over the last year or two for listening to, because of the quality of a dedicated player and amp can give.
      When they come round and hear songs on my system they say "I've never heard that before" or "it sounds so clear".
      Note to anyone who reads this who doesn't have a CD collection and wants to start.... Now is the time it's not gonna get any cheaper.

    Oh Terry it's so refreshing to hear a review that is not overflowing with BS hyperbole . American reviewers deserve Oscars for their consistent "best ever" reviews, I'm pleased that generally Brits, and some other European reviewers don't fall into that trap.
    I agree with other comments , that one CD player review in isolation after 10 years away is not really "that" helpful, there are a lot of CD players out there many cheaper, and better spec's. My most recent CD Eureka moment came when I plugged in a £20 computer disc reader into my Eversolo A8 , using the A8 dac , it sounded great. Then I used my £1500 Teac cd player as a transport thru the A8, it sounded great too, in fact I could not swear to hearing any difference . My conclusion is that the 0-1s get to converter , however, and after that is when the magic happens. Looking forward to you building you library of CD reviews , git to start somewhere .
    Great shirt.

      Thanks for the kind comment. Never any hyperbole from me I am not that kind of person. If I seem excited its becuase I am or not as sometimes is the case :)
      Different to you I feel very strongly about what comes before a DAC and that matters immensely. I have had very different sound balance presentations from the same Chord TT2 in the last 5 years depending on what source is before it. I spent 10 years building computer music servers and you can make the sound big and full or super lean and clean with the exact same dac just by changing USB buffer settings so it matters :) Just for extra food for thought.

    • @kevineyles8822
      @kevineyles8822 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s a brilliant, informative response . I am an analogue cable believer , but digital cables I really don’t hear any difference , but I was expecting to hear a huge difference using the Teac (75 times the price) , but after 2 days comparing them, I really didn’t . Also the cheap transport as a cd player thru the A8, sounded very similar to the burned music on the hard drive, which in turn sounds better than Quboz streaming.
      I will try again with another transport , I might just have to admit my hearing is not what I think/hope it is, but in my main system I use a Linn Klimax DS and that sounds way better than the A8, in the same system.
      This brilliant hobby is just never ending , thanks again keep up the fabulous work .

For almost two decades now I got into purchasing SACD's, multi channel DVD-Audio, and Blu-ray audio. I'm extremely happy that I retained my entire collection. Physical media sounds far superior to me, more expansive sound stage, relaxed separation of instruments, especially in the middle frequencies.

      i find many, many songs missing parts while streaming like that song from 72 now enters a big fantastic soloby David Gilmour and it´s there but under all other sounds and i know it´s there as i know the music but others will never know that there is a incredible solo there , i´m refering to Ibiza bar on More o.s.t from Pink Floyd on the Barbet Schroeder film about Ibiza in other dimention as i spent there many years and never saw what they show in the movie well they show nothing of what happened at the time in Ibiza ,felt like heaven on hearth in reality ,only the ones who went there know what i´m talking about. about aboat, it´s needed or catch the ferry where all are vomiting while i only vomited in the island after drinking 18 beers on the ferry ,arrive sooner and the voyage took forever ,even the kid at the bar gave me the botle opener and went running as he was sick also, after moking the other europen kids with blonde hair doing it as they started the trip , don´t know why i feel sick faster on those couches or sofa´s with vibration than aboat, and love it in a rough sea day and when they take songs you really like from spotify and nothing ... that´s why streamers today are like A.M radio portable in the past, unless they recorded it into cassettes or minidisc or reels or DAT , depending of what one as at home ,in minidisc more acoustic oriented music stays perfect but other more filled sound it´s better on tape and the 4khertz frequency in the recording is a lot up in the recorded sound ,so if one as a equalizer reduce this frequency with others in flat. i gave this example but this happens countless times as i have almost 2.000 playlists of 8 to 12 hours each and i´m recording them as compilations that if i had to do it manually or get the cds or Lp´s and record each track it would take days to record a 90 minuts cassette or 90 minuts DAT or 80 minuts minidisc or 30 minuts reel (the ones i have blank , at high speed sound resolution), with a 7 seconds crossfader stays really nice or even 15 minuts crossfader , sounds like those tapes recorded with mixing table or with "Passage"

Even if you stream 24 bit 96 KHz music, you need quite a high bitrate to match the sonic excellence of fully uncompressed music. I use Tidal Hifi and uses only the highest bitrates and only then it will be better than CD.

    My audiolab cd transport/ Schitt Multibit setup sounds more musical to me than my wav files played through my other Schitt multibit. The audiolab transport setup beats Amazon HD through the same multibit unit. I do not see how a streamed file can sound better than a physical music source like cd. Never mind that HD flac files are 24 bit. I’ve found that 16 bit CDs played through a quality DAC still beats “files from a faraway server”.

    Nice long awaited update from Cyrus. £3k for a slot loader... Nice bespoke remote compared to the horrible silver plastic one. £2.5k for the PSU which is basically a transformer... So you would need to add 2? One for the CD player and one for the amp? So 5k. Seriously?

    With 10 years of having to listen to a CD and considering that now you came back to it and found it to be at least even so slighly superior to streaming (at least in quite a few aspects), makes someone wonder whether of who knows how many reviews of yours, were compromised by playback of something even a tad inferior.

    • @PursuitPerfectSystem
      @PursuitPerfectSystem  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have had very high end streaming here for nearly all of 10 years, that’s easily this good if not considerably better. Lately I have had more affordable streaming sources here. That is the difference I am referring to, however having a CD player as part of my review arsenal does make sense as another tool to use. My reviews are bang on always I am confident of that, dont forget I travel a lot too so hear these products in other peoples systems too.
      Also remember I have a dedicated fully acoustically treated room to work in that allows me to hear differences much easier than an echoy room with all hard surfaces.

    • @Yiannis2112
      @Yiannis2112 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@PursuitPerfectSystem I never doubted you were using high end streaming through these years, in a properly treated room and that you exchange views with other gearheads and people in the industry for many years. I know cause I'm a subscriber for a number of years. I don't know where in my post, I implied the opposite.
      I'll try to rephrase it though. What I'm saying is with reference to what you said from 7:30 onwards. Especially at 8:08 where you say that you find SOME streamers to be harsh or thin or both. Especially more affordable ones. So there are still some harsh and/or thin streamers, which are expensive and high end. Now if a 3k squid CD player can see all affordable and some expensive ones in the eye, it'd be logical for a hi end CD player to be able to do the same to hi end streamers too. That's what I'm asking.

    I think CD's and therefore also CD players have been dead for at least 15 years. Not because CD's are bad, but because of the inconvenience. They are expensive, take up a lot of space, and are bloated with mediocre songs. Streaming is certainly better in all regards.

    Great to see see CD back in the mix, however, not sure about this CD pkayer. At almost three grand and no balanced outputs and I do not like slot loading players as there is a tendency to scratch the discs. Also, at this price, surely they could of done away with needing a seperate power supply? Furthermore, CD sounds best with classical music so reviwers need to incorporate that as well as the usual rock stuff. 👎
